Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 5, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Lashing out 14 hits, the Royals swept to a 5-1 victory over the Orioles. The Royals got on the board in the second inning when Hal McRae singled, stole second and registered on a single by Frank White. McRae drilled a two-run double in the third and Rusty Torres stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth. George Brett doubled home Willie Wilson in the eighth for the Royals' final run.

Red Sox 8, Tigers 4 at Boston (day game):
A three-run eruption in the sixth inning triggered the Red Sox to an 8-4 victory over the Tigers. With the score tied, 4-4. in the sixth, Jim Dwyer walked, Butch Hobson singled and Rick Burleson doubled home Dwyer. Hobson also scored on the play when left fielder Jim Lentine mishandled the ball. Dave Stapleton then singled Burleson home. Boston's final run came in the seventh on a homer by Tony Perez.

Angels 5, A's 4 at California (day game):
Pushing across a run in the 14th inning, the Angels edged the A's, 5-4. Don Baylor stroked a one-out single and stole second. After Jason Thompson received an intentional walk, Bobby Grich delivered a single to plate Baylor with the winning marker. The Angels had manufactured a deadlock in the eighth on a homer by Grich, who had five hits in the game.

Yankees 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Held hitless for seven innings by Steve Trout, the Yankees erupted for three hits, including a two-run homer by Rick Cerone, in the eighth to defeat the White Sox, 3-1, behind the two-hit hurling of Rudy May. May had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings before Chet Lemon doubled and scored on a single by Ron Pruitt. Eric Soderholm began the Yankees' eighth with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Fred Stanley. Lou Piniella broke up the no-hitter with a single that sent Stanley to third, but Piniella made a wide turn at first and was thrown out. A single by Ruppert Jones plated Stanley and Cerone followed with his round-tripper.

Twins 7, Mariners 6 at Minnesota (day game):
The winning run scored on an error as the Twins tallied twice in the 13th inning to shade the Mariners, 7-6. After the Mariners took a 6-5 lead in the top of 13th on a run-scoring double by Dan Meyer, Ron Jackson led off the bottom of the frame with a triple and counted on a single by Pete Mackanin. Hosken Powell forced Mackanin at second, but Rob Wilfong and Ken Landreaux walked to load the sacks. Jose Morales then hit a grounder to shortstop Larry Milbourne, who threw to second baseman Julio Cruz for a forceout. Cruz relayed the ball to Joe Simpson in time to get Morales, but the first baseman dropped the throw and Powell tallied the winning run.

Rangers 12, Indians 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers blasted off for four runs in the first inning and routed the Indians. 12-2, behind the five-hit hurling of Doc Medich. Bump Wills led off with a single and Buddy Bell was safe on an error by second baseman Jack Brohamer. After a single by Al Oliver scored Wills, Richie Zisk clouted a three-run homer. Bell, going 3-for-4 to raise his major league-leading average to .347, extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

[DH] Blue Jays 4, Brewers 1 (day game) / Brewers 4, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (day game):
The Blue Jays won the opener of a doubleheader, 4-1, but the Brewers came back to take the nightcap, 4-0. With the score tied, 1-1, in the sixth inning of the first game, John Mayberry singled and scored on a double by Roy Howell. Al Woods then followed with a two-run homer to seal the verdict. Paul Mitchell and Bob McClure combined on a five-hitter and Gorman Thomas went 4-for-4 and scored three runs to pace the Brewers to the second-game victory.

Giants 2, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Combining on a three-hitter, Allen Ripley and Al Holland hurled the Giants to a 2-0 victory over the Reds. Ripley went seven innings before leaving the mound because of a pulled left hamstring. The Giants scored in the seventh on a single by Bill North and double by Darrell Evans and added an insurance marker in the eighth when Joe Strain singled, took second on a groundout and came home on a double by Mike Sadek.

[DH] Astros 6, Braves 5 (night game) / Astros 6, Braves 1 at Houston (night game):
The Astros swept a doubleheader from the Braves, winning the first game, 6-5, and capturing the nightcap, 6-1. In the opener, the Astros trailed, 5-4, going into the eighth inning but tied the score on a leadoff homer by Cesar Cedeno. With two out, Craig Reynolds doubled, pinch-hitter Bruce Bochy walked and Terry Puhl hit an infield single to load the bases. Joe Morgan then hit a bouncer over the mound that second baseman Glenn Hubbard was unable to handle and Reynolds scored the deciding run on the hit. Puhl and Denny Walling collected three hits and two RBIs apiece to pace the Astros in the second game.

Expos 2, Cubs 1 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos regained first place in the division over the Phillies by shading the Cubs, 2-1. Gary Carter drilled a homer in the fourth inning to give the Expos a 1-0 lead, but the Cubs tied the game in the sixth on a triple by Doug Capilla and single by Jesus Figueroa. In the bottom of the sixth, Ron LeFlore walked, took second on an infield out, moved to third on a single by Andre Dawson and scored the deciding run as Carter grounded out to second.

[DH] Mets 7, Cardinals 4 (day game) / Mets 10, Cardinals 4 at New York (day game):
Lee Mazzilli went 6-for-8 with two homers and drove in six runs to pace the Mets to a 7-4, 10-4 doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals. Mazzilli's second round-tripper of the first game came in the eighth inning with two mates aboard and boosted the Mets into a 4-3 lead after they had fallen behind, 3-1, in the top of frame on a two-run homer by George Hendrick. Later in the stanza, the Mets added three more tallies on a single by Frank Taveras, two walks, a single by Joel Youngblood and two-run error by Cardinals shortstop Garry Templeton. In the second game, Mark Bomback pitched a seven-hitter to record his second route-going effort of the campaign. At one stage he retired 15 consecutive batters. Four different Mets delivered RBI singles in a five-run second inning. The Mets took advantage of sloppy Cardinals fielding to score one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Leon Durham clouted two homers for St. Louis.

Pirates 7, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
Don Robinson starred on the mound and at the plate to lead the Pirates to a 7-3 decision over the Phillies. The righthander pitched 8 1/e innings to get credit for the victory and clouted a two-run homer in a four-run second inning.

Padres 4, Dodgers 3 at San Diego (day game):
Scoring two runs in the 15th inning, the Padres edged the Dodgers, 4-3. Dave Cash, whose error had allowed the Dodgers to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the 15th, began the bottom of the frame with a line drive to right which Joe Ferguson fumbled, allowing Cash to reach second. One out later, a single by Gene Richards plated Cash. Richards then stole second and scored the winning run on a single by Ozzie Smith.
