Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 8, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Amos Otis homered and scored three times to spark the Royals to an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox. After putting the Royals up 1-0 with a circuit clout in the second inning, Otis led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a single by U.L. Washington. He also walked and scored in the sixth on a bases-loaded double by Frank White.

Angels 7, Indians 1 at California (night game):
Frank Tanana pitched the first seven innings to pick up the victory as the Angels swept past the Indians, 7-1. The Angels scored twice in the fourth inning on a single by Jason Thompson and groundout by Freddie Patek. They added four tallies in the fifth with a two-run single by Don Baylor being the key blow.

Orioles 7, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
A two-run single by Terry Crowley keyed a three-run sixth inning that carried the Orioles to a 7-3 triumph over the Brewers. The game was tied, 2-2, when the Birds loaded the bases in the sixth on a hit batsman, a single by Rich Dauer and bunt single by Al Bumbry. Crowley then delivered a pair of tallies with his hit and Ken Singleton followed with a run-scoring single to cap the rally.

Twins 5, Yankees 4 at New York (night game):
A suicide squeeze bunt produced the winning run as the Twins edged the Yankees, 5-4. The game was tied, 4-4, when Ron Jackson began the Twins' eighth with a two-bagger and advanced to third on a groundout by Jose Morales. After Rich Gossage relieved Ron Guidry on the hill for the Yanks, pinch-hitter Mike Cubbage laid down a perfect bunt, enabling Jackson to score. The Yankees' runs came on a three-run homer by Reggie Jackson in the first and solo shot by Willie Randolph in the seventh, which tied the game.

White Sox 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Britt Burns pitched the White Sox to a 2-1 decision over the Rangers. The White Sox scored in the second inning on a double by Todd Cruz and broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a homer by Bob Molinaro. The Rangers' Buddy Bell cracked a fourth-inning double, extending his hitting streak to 19 games.

Mets 9, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Two homers by Steve Henderson and the six-hit pitching of Pat Zachry sparked the Mets to a 9-2 triumph over the Braves. The Mets jumped to a 4-0 lead in their first turn at bat on a walk, singles by John Stearns and Mike Jorgensen and three-run round-tripper by Henderson. The second homer by Henderson came with the bases empty in the sixth. Lee Mazzilli capped the Mets' scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth.

Dodgers 6, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
A first-inning homer by Davey Lopes, who hit the second pitch by Lynn McGlothen over the right field wall, triggered the Dodgers to a 6-2 victory over the Cubs. After one out in the Dodgers' first, Reggie Smith singled, Steve Garvey doubled and Ron Cey singled to add two more tallies. Lopes also drove in two other runs with a groundout in the second and single in the third.

Reds 11, Expos 7 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench cracked a two-run homer to become the all-time leading slugger among catchers and George Foster contributed a three-run shot as the Reds defeated the Expos, 11-7. Foster's blast in the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and, after Ray Knight singled, Bench madethe score 7-4 with his record-breaking smash. Bench raised his career homer total as a catcher to 314 to pass Yogi Berra.

Astros 3, Phillies 2 at Houston (night game):
A throwing error by Dick Ruthven enabled the Astros to score the winning run in the ninth inning and beat the Phillies, 3-2. Alan Ashby began the frame with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Jeff Leonard, who advanced to second on a balk. Craig Reynolds then laid down a bunt which Ruthven fielded and threw wild, allowing Leonard to score.

Pirates 5, Giants 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Taking advantage of errors, the Pirates scored three runs in the eighth inning to end the Giants' seven-game winning streak, 5-2. With the score tied, 2-2, in the eighth, Phil Garner singled and Steve Nicosia laid down a sacrifice bunt that third baseman Darrell Evans fielded, but his throw struck pitcher Bob Knepper and the ball bounced into center field, enabling Garner to go to third and Nicosia to reach second. After Manny Sanguillen walked, Lee Lacy's grounder was muffed by shortstop Johnnie LeMaster as Garner scored. Dave Parker then singled home two more runs.

Cardinals 5, Padres 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Erupting for three runs in the first inning, the Cardinals went on to a 5-3 victory over the Padres. Bobby Bonds opened the first with a walk, stole second and came home on a single by Garry Templeton. After a single by Keith Hernandez and a double steal, both runners scored on a double by Ted Simmons. Bob Forsch helped himself to the victory, driving in what proved to be the deciding run with a single in the sixth.
