Royals 5, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Going 4-for-5, George Brett sparked the Royals to a 5-1 triumph over the Red Sox. The Royals' third baseman, hitting at a .548 clip on 17-for-31 since coming off the disabled list after the All-Star break, tripled in the fourth inning and scored on a double by Darrell Porter. The Royals added a run in the fifth when Willie Wilson reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second and came home on a single by Hal McRae. Porter drilled a solo homer in the sixth and McRae and Brett singled in runs in the ninth.
Indians 6, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Miguel Dilone collected three hits and scored two runs to spark the Indians to a 6-2 victory over the Angels. Dilone led off the fourth inning with a single, stole his 30th base of the season and scored on a single by Jorge Orta to tie the game at 1-1. Orta raced to third on a single by Mike Hargrove and came home on a double by Toby Harrah. Sacrifice flies by Ron Hassey and Jack Brohamer made it 4-1. The Tribe added two runs in the fifth on doubles by Dilone and Orta.
Orioles 10, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Although needing relief, Steve Stone posted his 12th straight victory and 14th of the season as the Orioles bombarded the Brewers, 10-4. Rick Dempsey was the hitting hero of the evening. doubling home the Orioles' first two runs in the second inning and smacking a three-run homer in the sixth. Gary Roenicke clouted a two-run homer in the seventh and Doug DeCinces doubled in two runs in the ninth.
Yankees 11, Twins 1 at New York (night game):
Bob Watson delivered a bases-loaded triple to highlight a seven-run fourth inning that triggered the Yankees to an 11-1 rout of the Twins. After a walk and seven singles, Bobb yMurcer grounded into a forceout at the plate, but Watson then capped the Yankee outburst with his three-bagger. The Yankees added three tallies in the fifth on sacrifice flies by Fred Stanley and Murcer and a run-scoring single by Ruppert Jones.
Tigers 7, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
A three-run homer by Lance Parrish highlighted a 7-2 victory by the Tigers over the A's. After a single by Richie Hebner plated the first run in the fourth inning, the Tigers batted around in the sixth, scoring five runs -- three on Parrish's round-tripper -- for a 6-2 lead. A double by Parrish and single by Tom Brookens accounted for the final tally in the eighth. Milt Wilcox left the game when he suffered a pulled muscle in his left side and Roger Weaver picked up the win by pitching the final six innings and yielding just two hits.
Blue Jays 5, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
John Mayberry smashed two homers and Roy Howell and Ernie Whitt whacked one each to support a three-hitter by Dave Stieb, who pitched the Blue Jays to a 5-0 triumph over the Mariners. Howell's clout put the Jays ahead, 1-0, in the second inning. Mayberry's first blast came in the third with Whitt aboard. Whitt led off the eighth with his round-tripper and two outs later Mayberry drilled his second shot. The game was played in one hour, 40 minutes.
Rangers 11, White Sox 3 at Texas (night game):
A homer by Dave Roberts with two men on base climaxed a five-run fourth inning that propelled the Rangers to an 11-3 drubbing of the White Sox. Al Oliver began the outburst with a one-out single. After Buddy Bell walked, Richie Zisk singled home the first run of the frame. Rusty Staub then singled home another tally and Roberts followed with a liner into the left field seats. Texas scored five more times in the fifth, one run coming on a single by Staub, who had a 4-for-4 night.
Braves 5, Mets 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Gary Matthews drilled a three-run homer and Bob Horner cracked two solo shots to lead the Braves to a 5-2 decision over the Mets. After Matthews connected in the first inning, Horner added a blast in the same frame. Horner's second clout came in the third.
Cubs 4, Dodgers 1 at Chicago (day game):
Two errors on one play by Bill Russell opened the gates for the Cubs to score two runs in the sixth inning and defeat the Dodgers, 4-1. The score was 1-1 in the sixth when Bill Buckner singled. After Cliff Johnson flied out, Mike Vail hit a grounder to Russell, who bobbled the ball and then threw wildly in an attempt for a forceout at second base, allowing Buckner to score and Vail to reach third. Vail then tallied on an infield out by Tim Blackwell.
Expos 6, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Ellis Valentine went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Expos to a 6-4 triumph over the Reds. The Expos scored twice in their first turn at bat on a run-scoring single by Valentine and a throwing error by Reds third baseman Ray Knight. Larry Parrish drilled a bases-empty homer in the second inning and the Expos took a 5-0 lead in the sixth on a two-run single by Gary Carter. Valentine capped Montreal's scoring with an RBI double in the eighth. Winning pitcher Steve Rogers gave up solo homers in the seventh to Knight, Joe Nolan and Sam Mejias, but Stan Bahnsen came on to save the game.
Phillies 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Unbeaten rookie Bob Walk tossed a three-hitter to win his sixth consecutive game as the Phillies defeated the Astros, 4-2. The Phils took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Pete Rose doubled and scored on a single by Bake McBride. who went to third on a single by Keith Moreland and came home as Garry Maddox grounded out. Manny Trillo singled in the fourth, stole second, took third on a throwing error by catcher Alan Ashby and scored the deciding run on a single by Lonnie Smith. Trillo rapped an infield hit to Craig Reynolds in the sixth, advanced to third on a wild throw by the shortstop and scored on a sacrifice fly by John Vukovich.
Pirates 3, Giants 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates recorded their fourth straight victory, defeating the Giants, 3-1. The Bucs scored two runs in the first inning on a single by Omar Moreno, pass to Phil Garner, an infield out and single by John Milner. Bill Madlock hit a sacrifice fly for an insurance run in the sixth.
Cardinals 3, Padres 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Pete Vuckovich starred on the hill and at the plate to spark the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Padres. The righthander, who pitched his second shutout and sixth complete game of the season, led off the third inning with a single, reached second on a one-out single by Garry Templeton and scored on a single by Keith Hernandez. Templeton tallied on a sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons. Ken Reitz opened the seventh with a double, took third on a groundout and scored when Vuckovich laid down a perfect squeeze bunt.
