Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, Rangers 7 at Baltimore (night game):
A triple by Mark Belanger proved the key blow that enabled the Orioles to outlast the Rangers, 8-7. The Orioles erupted for six runs in the seventh inning, two scoring on a single by Ken Singleton, to take a 6-3 lead. Belanger batted in another run with his triple in the eighth and then, trying for an inside-the-park homer, scored what proved to be the deciding run when catcher Jim Sundberg dropped the throw to the plate. The Rangers came back with four runs in the ninth before their rally fell short.

Red Sox 1, Twins 0 at Boston (night game):
Dave Stapleton broke up a pitching duel between Mike Torrez and Roger Erickson, smashing a homer in the 10th inning to give the Red Sox a 1-0 victory over the Twins. Torrez, who gave up seven hits, broke a personal four-game losing streak. Stapleton's homer came on the eighth hit allowed by Erickson.

Angels 6, Blue Jays 3 at California (night game):
A six-run outburst in the second inning that included a bases-loaded triple by Rod Carew carried the Angels to a 6-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Joe Rudi singled and Bobby Grich walked to open the stanza. After one out, both runners scored on a single by Stan Cliburn. Two passes then filled the sacks and Carew emptied them with his triple. On the next pitch, Don Baylor singled to score Carew.

Brewers 5, White Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Robin Yount rapped a single, triple and homer as one of three Brewers batters with three hits apiece in a 5-1 victory over the White Sox. Yount apparently struck out in the seventh inning, but umpire Jerry Neudecker had called time before the pitch was delivered by Steve Trout. Given a second chance at the plate, Yount whacked his homer on the next serve by the White Sox loser.

Royals 13, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Willie Wilson collected five hits and Amos Otis and George Brett rapped four apiece to lead the Royals' 21-hit attack in a 13-1 trouncing of the Yankees. Brett started the Royals' scoring, smashing a homer after a single by Wilson in the first inning. Larry Gura, who once was with the Yankees, pitched a three-hitter and brought his career record against the New York club to 6-1.

A's 9, Indians 1 at Oakland (night game):
The A's broke their club record for homers in a game, smashing six while beating the Indians, 9-1. Tony Armas and Mitchell Page whacked two homers each and Jim Essian and Dwayne Murphy hit one apiece to surpass the A's former high of five. While his teammates were pounding the ball, Mike Norris pitched a four-hitter and turned in his 13th complete game and 48th to the credit of the A's staff.

Tigers 5, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Run-scoring singles by Al Cowens and Tom Brookens in the 10th inning brought the Tigers a 5-3 victory over the Mariners. Marc Hill, purchased by the Mariners from the Giants, homered for his first A.L. hit to tie the score in the seventh inning. Steve Kemp opened the 10th for the Tigers with a single and moved to second on an infield out by Richie Hebner. After pinch-hitter John Wockenfuss was retired, Cowens hit his single to break the tie.

Phillies 7, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Pete Rose and Bake McBride batted in three runs apiece and Mike Schmidt smashed a homer to back up the pitching of Nino Espinosa and Dickie Noles as the Phillies defeated the Braves, 7-2. Bob Horner and Chris Chambliss homered for the Braves' only hits off Espinosa, who pitched the first seven innings. Noles allowed a single by pinch-hitter Biff Pocoroba while hurling the last two frames.

Padres 2, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Replacing Juan Eichelberger, who underwent an emergency appendectomy, Bob Shirley made his first start of the season for the Padres and combined with Rollie Fingers to beat the Cubs, 2-1. Dave Cash hit his first homer of the year to start the Padres' scoring in the fifth inning. The deciding run followed in the sixth on singles by Ozzie Smith and Jerry Mumphrey and a double by Willie Montanez.

[DH] Reds 5, Mets 3 (night game) / Reds 8, Mets 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
After a three-run homer by Hector Cruz won the first game, 5-3, Bruce Berenyi gained his first major league victory when the Reds also won the second game, 8-3, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Mets. A homer by Claudell Washington put the Mets ahead, 3-2, in the opener before Johnny Bench and Dan Driessen walked and Cruz came through with his circuit clout in the sixth inning. Driessen and George Foster homered for the Reds in the nightcap, Foster's blow coming with two men on base.

Expos 5, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Gary Carter, who had homered earlier in the game, rapped a run-scoring single in the 11th inning to give the Expos a 5-4 victory over the Astros. With one out, Ellis Valentine singled and raced to third on a wild pitch by Dave Smith. Warren Cromartie, who was stopped on his 18-game batting streak, was handed an intentional pass before Carter came through with the winning hit.

Pirates 6, Dodgers 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A homer by John Milner and bases-loaded single by Phil Garner in the sixth inning accounted for three runs and brought the Pirates a 6-4 victory over the Dodgers. After Milner's homer tied the score at 4-4, the Pirates loaded the bases on a single by Mike Easler, pass to Bill Madlock and an error by Steve Garvey to set the stage for Garner's deciding single.

Giants 8, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
Capping a comeback, Milt May hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to power the Giants to an 8-7 victory over the Cardinals. The Giants were aided by the wildness of John Littlefield, who walked the first two batters in the ninth. After an error by Mike Phillips loaded the bases, Kim Seaman relieved and retired Darrell Evans, but it was a different story with May, who hit his game-winning homer.
