Today's scores and summaries:
Rangers 11, Orioles 8 at Baltimore (night game):
Bump Wills hit the first grand slam of his major league career, capping a five-run outburst in the 10th inning and giving the Rangers an 11-8 victory over the Orioles. With one out, Pat Putnam walked, Billy Sample was hit by a pitch and Jim Sundberg walked to load the bases. One out later, Mickey Rivers drew a pass to force in the tie-breaking run and Wills followed with his homer.
Twins 4, Red Sox 0 at Boston (day game):
Helped by four double plays, Fernando Arroyo pitched the Twins to a 4-0 victory over the Red Sox. The shutout was the first for Arroyo since June 15, 1977, when the righthander was with the Tigers.
Blue Jays 5, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Barry Bonnell banged a homer in the second inning and then drove in another run with a single in the ninth to bring the Blue Jays a 5-4 victory over the Angels. Lloyd Moseby also homered for the Jays, while Bobby Grich hit one for the Angels in the eighth to tie the score at 4-4. In the ninth, Damaso Garcia led off with a double, advanced to third when Don Baylor let the ball get by him in right field and scored the Blue Jays' winning run on Bonnell's single.
White Sox 10, Brewers 7 at Milwaukee (night game):
Trailing, 7-4, entering the eighth inning, the White Sox erupted for six runs and defeated the Brewers, 10-7. Chet Lemon led off the outburst with a single and capped it with a sacrifice fly. The scoring in between included a two-run double by Bob Molinaro. Don Money and Gorman Thomas drove in three runs apiece for the Brewers, with each having a homer. Harold Baines homered for the Sox.
Yankees 13, Royals 7 at New York (night game):
Reggie Jackson drove in five runs with four hits, including a homer, and Bob Watson also had four hits to lead the Yankees' attack in a 13-7 victory over the Royals. Jackson's homer with a man on base was his 25th of the season, marking the 10th straight year that the Yankee slugger had hit 25 or more homers.
A's 3, Indians 0 at Oakland (day game):
Allowing only four hits, Steve McCatty recorded the first shutout of his major league career, pitching the A's to a 3-0 victory over the Indians. Rick Waits, hurling for the Indians, matched McCatty in ciphers until the eighth inning when the A's scored all their runs. With one out, walks to Jeff Cox and Dwayne Murphy around a double by Rickey Henderson loaded the bases. Jim Essian followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Cox. The A's then worked a double steal, Henderson scoring. Tony Armas capped the inning with a single, driving in Murphy.
Tigers 5, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Lance Parrish hit two doubles and two homers in the early going and scored three runs before the Tigers broke a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning to defeat the Mariners, 5-3. Stan Papi led off the overtime frame with a triple and gave way to pinch-runner Lou Whitaker. After an intentional pass to Champ Summers, Alan Trammell hit a sacrifice fly to snap the tie. John Wockenfuss followed with a double, driving in pinch-runner Dave Stegman, to
clinch the victory.
[DH] Braves 5, Phillies 2 (night game) / Braves 7, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The sixth inning proved lucky for the Braves, who scored four runs in the sixth inning in the opener and six runs in the sixth inning in the nightcap to defeat the Phillies in a twi-night doubleheader, 5-2 and 7-2. In the first game, after Chris Chambliss drove in a run with a single in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, Gary Matthews and Bob Horner hit successive homers. Horner homered again for the Braves' first run in the second game. With Phillies the leading, 2-1, the Braves then exploded in the sixth, sending 11 men to bat. Bill Nahorodny accounted for two runs with a double during the outburst.
Cubs 8, Padres 7 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run double by Cliff Johnson with two out in the ninth inning provided the Cubs with an 8-7 victory over the Padres. Pinch-hitter Jerry Martin began the rally with a single and, after two out, Ken Henderson, also pinch-hitting, drew a walk. The Padres brought in Eric Rasmussen to pitch in place of Dennis Kinney, but the move backfired when Johnson rapped his game-winning two-base hit.
Mets 13, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Roy Lee Jackson pitched a three-hitter and Bill Almon went 4-for-6 with four runs scored as the Mets mauled the Reds, 13-3. The Reds managed an early 3-3 tie before Lee Mazzilli homered in the fifth inning to start the Mets' runaway. Ken Griffey singled in the third inning for the 1,000th hit of his career with the Reds.
[DH] Astros 4, Expos 2 (night game) / Expos 5, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Sparked by Craig Reynolds, who hit a homer, the Astros scored four runs in the seventh inning and won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-2, but the Expos came back to take a 5-2 decision in the second game behind the pitching of Bill Gullickson, who gained his first major league victory. After Reynolds' round-tripper in the opener, the Astros proceeded to load the bases. Denny Walling then singled, driving in two runs, and Danny Heep added another tally with a single. In the nightcap, the Expos broke a 2-2 tie in the second inning with a pair of runs driven in on a double by Bobby Ramos and a single by Ron LeFlore. Ellis Valentine clinched the decision by hitting a homer in the third.
Pirates 7, Dodgers 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
With Mike Easler and John Milner batting in two runs apiece, the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 7-3, for their seventh straight victory. Easler delivered his RBIs with a double in the first inning and Milner homered with a man on base in the third. Don Robinson, who started on the mound for the Pirates, pulled a groin muscle in the first. Eddie Solomon relieved and hurled six innings to gain the victory.
Giants 7, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Alan Hargesheimer brought his pitching record to 2-0 and his batting average to .750 as the Giants defeated the Cardinals, 7-4. The rookie righthander rapped two singles, drew a walk, drove in one run and scored another while pitching 6 2/3 innings before giving way to Gary Lavelle.
