Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 12, Rangers 5 at Boston (night game):
Dave Stapleton drove in four runs, three with a bases-loaded double that climaxed a five-run seventh inning, as the Red Sox pounded out a 12-5 victory over the Rangers. The Red Sox entered the seventh trailing, 4-3, but tied the game on a homer by Tony Perez. An error and two walks then loaded the bases. Charlie Hough replaced John Henry Johnson on the hill for Texas and was touched for an infield hit by Larry Wolfe that produced the go-ahead run. Stapleton followed with his two-bagger. The Red Sox picked up four more runs in the eighth, two on a double by Dwight Evans.

Tigers 7, Angels 6 at California (night game):
A throwing error by third baseman Carney Lansford with two out in the ninth inning allowed the winning run to score and gave the Tigers a 7-6 victory over the Angels. Al Cowens opened the inning with a single and, two outs later, reached third on a single by Richie Hebner. Pinch-hitter Champ Summers then hit a grounder to Lansford, who tried to force Hebner at second but threw the ball into right field, allowing Cowens to tally the winning run. The Angels had tied the game in the seventh on a solo homer by Jason Thompson, who also clouted a two-run shot in the first.

Royals 9, White Sox 2 at Kansas City (night game):
U.L. Washington, Willie Aikens and George Brett each hit a solo homer to key a 15-hit attack that carried the Royals to a 9-2 decision over the White Sox. Washington drilled his round-tripper in the first inning, Aikens connected in the second and Brett in the fifth. Larry Gura, going the first seven innings, received credit for his 13th victory.

Orioles 8, Twins 7 at Minnesota (night game):
Dan Graham drove in three runs with a single and two sacrifice flies to give him 13 RBIs in three games against the Twins, his former club, sparking the Orioles to an 8-7 victory. Ken Singleton had four singles and drove in two tallies. After a single by Graham tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning, Singleton's single in the fourth scored Rich Dauer to put the Orioles ahead to stay.

Yankees 4, Brewers 0 at New York (night game):
Firing a four-hitter, Ron Guidry pitched the Yankees to a 4-0 victory over the Brewers. The Yanks scored their first run in the fourth inning when Graig Nettles doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and tallied on a sacrifice fly by Jim Spencer. Two runs followed in the fifth when Bucky Dent doubled, Bobby Murcer drove him home with a single, then stole second and scored on a single by Oscar Gamble. The final run in the eighth was unearned on an error by Don Money.

A's 6, Blue Jays 2 at Oakland (day game):
Tony Armas' 22nd homer of the season highlighted the A's 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays. The A's scored twice in the third inning on an RBI double by Jeff Cox and a wild pitch. They added three runs in the fourth on a leadoff round-tripper by Armas, run-scoring double by Rob Picciolo and RBI single by Cox. Armas and Mitchell Page hit back-to-back doubles in the fifth for the A's final run.

Indians 12, Mariners 6 at Seattle (night game):
A bases-loaded homer by Joe Charboneau climaxed a seven-run explosion in the 11th inning that lifted the Indians to a 12-6 triumph over the Mariners. The score was 5-5 when Bo Diaz opened the outburst with a single. Jerry Dybzinski sacrificed and Miguel Dilone doubled to snap the tie. A double by Jorge Orta drove in Dilone. Orta moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Byron McLaughlin then relieved Shane Rawley on the mound for Seattle and walked the bases full before yielding Charboneau's big blast.

Braves 6, Expos 5 at Atlanta (night game):
A single by Gary Matthews in the ninth inning drove home the winning run as the Braves shaded the Expos, 6-5. The Expos had tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth when Larry Parrish doubled, reached third on a groundout and came home on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jerry White. With one out in the Braves' half, Glenn Hubbard singled and raced to third on a single by Dale Murphy. After Chris Chambliss was intentionally walked, Matthews connected for the game-winning hit.

Giants 14, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
Jack Clark drove in four runs with a homer and sacrifice fly and Mike Ivie had four hits and three RBIs to lead a 21-hit attack that carried the Giants to a 14-6 thrashing of the Cubs. The Giants scored six runs in the third inning on a three-run round-tripper by Clark, a bases-loaded balk, sacrifice fly by Dennis Littlejohn and a wild pitch. Joe Pettini opened the seventh stanza with his first major league homer and the Giants got three more runs later in the frame on a sacrifice fly by Clark, RBI double by Larry Herndon and run-scoring single by Ivie.

Reds 7, Phillies 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
A two-run double by Joe Nolan highlighted a three-run fourth inning that propelled the Reds to a 7-3 triumph over the Phillies. The Reds trailed, 3-1, going into the bottom of the fourth but loaded the bases on three walks. After Nolan smacked a two-bagger to plate two tallies, a sacrifice fly by Junior Kennedy produced the go-ahead run. Ken Griffey drilled a two-run double in the seventh and Nolan capped the Reds' scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Mets 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Elliott Maddox opened the ninth inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jerry Morales to give the Mets a 4-3 victory over the Astros. The Mets overcame a 3-0 deficit with two unearned runs in the third and a tally on three singles in the sixth.

Padres 3, Pirates 2 at San Diego (night game):
A run-scoring single by Jerry Mumphrey in the eighth inning enabled the Padres to defeat the Pirates, 3-2. Gene Richards began the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Ozzie Smith. Mumphrey then hit the first pitch to him for a single to drive in Richards with the game-winner.

Cardinals 7, Dodgers 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Cardinals downed the Dodgers, 7-3. But it was a pyrrhic victory as Redbirds shortstop Garry Templeton suffered a broken left thumb and will be out of action at least three weeks. The Cards scored two runs in the first inning on a triple by Templeton, single by Leon Durham, an infield out and single by George Hendrick. Three more runs scored in the second on a walk to Ken Oberkfell, triple by Templeton, pass to Durham, groundout by Keith Hernandez and double by Ted Simmons. Dane Iorg smacked a two-run double in the fourth.
