Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Brewers 4 at Baltimore (day game):
A pinch-single by John Lowenstein in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted the Orioles to a 5-4 victory over the Brewers. The score was tied, 4-4, when with one out in the 12th, Ken Singleton reached first on an error by shortstop Robin Yount and advanced to second on a single by Eddie Murray. Lary Sorensen replaced Bob McClure on the mound for Milwaukee and Lowenstein hit a line drive that bounced in front of, then eluded, center fielder Gorman Thomas as Singleton raced home. The Birds had tied the game in the eighth on a two-run homer by Benny Ayala and sacrifice fly by Lenn Sakata after singles by Doug DeCinces and Pat Kelly.

[DH] White Sox 3, Rangers 2 (day game) / Rangers 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Rangers and White Sox divided a twin-bill, the Sox winning the first game, 3-2, and the Texans winning the second, 4-3, in 13 innings. The opener was tied, 2-2, in the sixth inning, when Greg Pryor singled and raced home with the decisive tally on a double by Bob Molinaro. A sacrifice fly by Jim Norris produced the game-winning run in the second game. With the game tied, 3-3, Mickey Rivers reached first in the top of the 13th on a force play, stole second, continued to third when catcher Ricky Seilheimer's throw went into center field and came home on Norris' short fly to left. The Sox had tied the game in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Randy Johnson.

[DH] Tigers 4, A's 2 (day game) / A's 4, Tigers 0 at Detroit (day game):
The A's and Tigers split a doubleheader, the Tigers winning the opener, 4-2, and the A's capturing the nightcap, 4-0. Homers by John Wockenfuss and Duffy Dyer were the key blows in the first game. Wockenfuss led off the Tigers' fourth inning with a round-tripper and Dyer added the two-run circuit clout. In the second contest, Matt Keough and Bob Lacey combined on a two-hitter as the A's scored in their first turn at bat when Rickey Henderson singled, stole second and came in on a single by Dave Revering. Wayne Gross bashed a solo homer in the eighth and Revering drilled a two-run triple in the ninth.

Royals 8, Yankees 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Larry Gura pitched the Royals to an 8-0 whitewashing of the Yankees. The K. C. southpaw raised his record to 14-4 with his 13th complete game and fourth shutout as he lowered his league-leading ERA to 2.01. The Royals got RBI singles in the first and second innings from Hal McRae and Dave Chalk and chased starter Tommy John with a six-run assault in the fourth as U.L. Washington and Chalk each stroked RBI singles. Amos Otis and Clint Hurdle smacked RBI doubles and George Brett topped the rally with a two-run triple.

Twins 5, Red Sox 4 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to shade the Red Sox, 5-4. With one out in the eighth and the score tied, 4-4, Rob Wilfong doubled. Ken Landreaux then received an intentional pass but Danny Goodwin spoiled the strategy by shooting a single to right that scored Wilfong. Reliever Al Williams went six innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run to gain the victory and Doug Corbett got the final three outs to notch his 11th save.

Blue Jays 5, Mariners 0 at Toronto (day game):
Two-hit pitching by Jesse Jefferson led the Blue Jays to a 5-0 blanking of the Mariners as Otto Velez sparked the Toronto attack with three RBIs. After Alfredo Griffin led off the Jays fourth inning with a single, Velez followed with a two-run homer. He added an RBI fielder's choice in the eighth. Al Woods smacked a two-run round-tripper in the sixth.

Dodgers 3, Cubs 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the 12th inning, the Dodgers outlasted the Cubs, 3-2. The score was 2-2 in the bottom of the 12th when Rudy Law cracked a one-out single. He stole second, continued to third when catcher Barry Foote's throw sailed into center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Ferguson. The Cubs had deadlocked the contest in the seventh on a pinch-single by Lenny Randle.

Astros 6, Expos 3 at Montreal (day game):
Winning pitcher Joe Niekro collected three hits, including a run-scoring single, to help the Astros to a 6-3 triumph over the Expos. Niekro worked only five innings and left with a stiff right elbow and reliever Dave Smith tossed the last four frames to earn his fifth save. After each team scored a pair of runs in the first inning, the Astros went ahead to stay in the second on an RBI triple by Rafael Landestoy. They added three more tallies in the third on an error by Expos third baseman Larry Parrish and a two-run single by Craig Reynolds.

Reds 10, Mets 4 at New York (day game):
Joe Price pitched six innings of two-hit relief as the Reds routed the Mets, 10-4. Cincinnati scored six runs in the third inning. The outburst began when Ray Knight reached first base on an error by shortstop Frank Taveras. After a walk to Ken Griffey, George Foster singled Knight home. Johnny Bench followed with a two-run single and Dave Concepcion and Ron Oester added RBI singles. A sacrifice fly by Dave Collins capped the big inning.

Phillies 17, Braves 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
Garry Maddox drove in five runs, three on a bases-loaded triple that climaxed a five-run second inning, as the Phillies clobbered the Braves, 17-4, with Steve Carlton recording his 16th victory. The score was 3-3 when the Phillies filled the sacks in the second on singles by Carlton, Lonnie Smith and Pete Rose. A double by Bake McBride drove in two runs and after Mike Schmidt was intentionally walked and Preston Hanna replaced Rick Matula on the hill for Atlanta, Maddox drilled his three-bagger.

Padres 5, Cardinals 2 at San Diego (day game):
A three-run outburst in the fourth inning propelled the Padres to a 5-2 triumph over the Cardinals. The Padres trailed, 1-0, when Gene Richards opened the bottom of the fourth with a triple. A single by Ozzie Smith then plated Richards and a double by Jerry Mumphrey chased Smith home. A single by Jerry Turner registered Mumphrey with the third marker of the frame. Gary Lucas, with relief aid from Rollie Fingers, snapped his personal four-game losing skein in getting credit for the victory.

Pirates 6, Giants 4 at San Francisco (day game):
A three-run first inning triggered the Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the Giants as Bibby, although needing relief help, upped his record to 13-1. Pittsburgh's runs in the opening frame came on an RBI single by Mike Easler and two-run single by Phil Garner. Tim Foli stroked a two-run single in the fourth and Bibby accounted for the final Bucs marker with a fifth-inning single.
