Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Twins 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A pinch-single by John Lowenstein, driving in two runs in the eighth inning, brought the Orioles a 3-2 victory over the Twins. Doug Corbett in relief of Roger Erickson appeared to have stopped the Orioles when Dan Graham lined into a double play. But with Eddie Murray on base, Corbett passed Gary Roenicke and Terry Crowley to fill the sacks before Lowenstein singled as the pinch-hitter for Mark Belanger.
Royals 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
U.L. Washington collected four hits, drove in two runs and scored two, leading the Royals to a 4-3 decision over the White Sox. On the pitching side, Larry Gura gained his 15th victory and Dan Quisenberry earned his league-leading 21st save after replacing the Royals' starter with two out in the eighth inning.
A's 2, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
The remarkable A's reached the .500 mark at 52-52 with a 2-1 victory over the Indians, in contrast to last season when their record was 31-77 on August 1. Jim Essian drove in one run and scored another to enable the A's to gain their fifth straight victory and snap the Indians' eight-game winning streak.
[DH] Tigers 1, Mariners 0 (night game) / Tigers 5, Mariners 2 at Detroit (night game):
After a run-scoring single by Al Cowens in the ninth inning produced a 1-0 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, the Tigers completed the sweep by defeating the Mariners in the second game, 5-2. A single by Duffy Dyer and two walks preceded Cowens' hit in the opener, scoring Ricky Peters, who ran for Dyer. In the nightcap, the Tigers tallied all their runs in the second inning. Champ Summers doubled, Cowens singled and both scored when Mariners pitcher Rob Dressler threw wildly on a grounder by Lou Whitaker. A single by Mark Wagner, triple by Peters and sacrifice fly by Alan Trammell added three runs.
Yankees 9, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Scoring seven runs in the first inning, the Yankees breezed to a 9-4 victory over the Brewers. Willie Randolph led off the game with a single and on his second trip to plate hit another single to drive in two runs. In between, Rick Cerone and Bobby Brown each accounted for two RBIs with a double and Reggie Jackson batted in a run with a single.
Rangers 7, Red Sox 5 at Texas (night game):
Buddy Bell had the first five-hit game of his major league career, driving in two runs and scoring two, to lead the Rangers to a 7-5 victory over the Red Sox. Pat Putnam contributed three RBIs to the Rangers' scoring, while Fred Lynn had a two-run homer for the Red Sox.
Blue Jays 9, Angels 8 at Toronto (night game):
Capping their comeback after trailing, 6-0, the Blue Jays scored on a two-out walk to Lloyd Moseby and a double by Bob Davis in the ninth inning to defeat the Angels, 9-8.
Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Shut out for eight innings, the Dodgers tied the score with a homer by Jay Johnstone in the ninth and then beat the Cardinals, 2-1, when Joe Ferguson hit for the circuit in the 10th. The Cards' run came on a homer by George Hendrick.
Expos 4, Braves 1 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos scored three runs in the first inning and proceeded to beat the Braves, 4-1, behind the three-hit hurling of Scott Sanderson. In the Expos' opening burst, Rodney Scott tripled, Andre Dawson doubled and Warren Cromartie homered.
Mets 5, Astros 4 at New York (night game):
Coming through with his fourth hit of the game, Frank Taveras singled with two out in the eighth inning, scoring Alex Trevino to give the Mets a 5-4 victory over the Astros. The Mets tied the score at 4-4 with a three-run pinch-homer by Steve Henderson in the seventh. Then in the eighth, Trevino singled, took third on a single by Doug Flynn and crossed the plate on Taveras' hit.
Phillies 3, Reds 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Although giving up 10 hits and passing four in eight innings, Bob Walk came out with a victory when the Phillies defeated the Reds, 3-1. Tug McGraw, in relief, pitched hitless ball in the final frame. The Phillies, who got RBIs from Manny Trillo, Mike Schmidt and Bake McBride, pinned the loss on Charlie Leibrandt, breaking their string of seven straight setbacks in encounters with lefthanders.
Padres 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Padres handed Jim Bibby his first loss since May 18 and only his second of the season, beating the Pirates, 1-0. The Padres scored their run in the sixth. Gene Richards singled, went to second on an infield out by Ozzie Smith, stole third and continued home on an overthrow by catcher Ed Ott. The run became earned when Jerry Mumphrey walked and Dave Winfield followed with a long fly on which Richards would have scored.
Cubs 5, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Bruce Sutter picked up his league-leading 22nd save, pitching two innings in relief of Rick Reuschel, as the Cubs defeated the Giants, 5-3. The Cubs scored two runs on a homer by Jerry Martin in the second and added a pair on a walk, triple by Tim Blackwell and double by Reuschel in the fourth.
