Scott McGregor beat the Twins for the sixth straight time, pitching the Orioles to a 9-2 victory. Rich Dauer contributed two RBIs to the victory.

Royals 8, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
The Royals piled up 20 hits and romped over the White Sox, 8-2. Hal McRae rapped five straight singles, driving in two runs and scoring two. Darrell Porter had four hits and batted in three runs, including two with a homer. George Brett, hitting safely in his 15th straight game, went 2-for-5 and raised his average to .388.

Tigers 9, Mariners 3 at Detroit (night game):
Bruce Robbins pitched shutout ball for seven innings and gained credit for the victory when the Tigers defeated the Mariners, 9-3. Robbins was lifted in favor of Aurelio Lopez after Bill Stein accounted for the M's runs with a homer in the eighth. Steve Kemp and Richie Hebner hit back-to-back homers in the seventh as part of the Tigers' attack.

Yankees 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Taking advantage of every opportunity, the Yankees scored five unearned runs and defeated the error-prone Brewers, 5-3. The Brewers had homers by Cecil Cooper and Robin Yount in taking a 3-0 lead before the Yankees scored four times in the sixth with the aid of errors by Paul Molitor and Ben Oglivie. Eric Soderholm drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single. The Yankees' final tally in the seventh resulted from two more errors.

Red Sox 1, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Obtained from the Yankees, Ed Figueroa was the loser in his first start for the Rangers, while Bob Ojeda was a winner for the first time in the major leagues when the Red Sox posted a 1-0 victory. The game's run counted in the second inning on a double by Jim Rice, an infield out by Carlton Fisk and single by Jim Dwyer.

Angels 5, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
Primarily used as a reliever, Dave LaRoche made one of his infrequent starts and turned in the first complete game of his major league career, pitching the Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays. LaRoche yielded only five hits, but they included three homers. The Angels came from behind to win when Bobby Clark drove in two runs with a two-out, bases-loaded single in the eighth inning.

Dodgers 3, Cardinals 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers, who beat the Cardinals, 2-1, with two homers in the previous night's game, did it again with two homers in gaining a 3-2 victory. Ron Cey hit for the circuit after a single by Dusty Baker in the second inning and Davey Lopes added a boundary belt in the third for the deciding run.

Expos 5, Braves 1 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos extended their winning streak to five games by defeating the Braves, 5-1, behind the six-hit pitching of Fred Norman, who made his second start of the year and turned in his first complete game of the season. The Expos' support of Norman included a two-run homer by Ellis Valentine and solo shot by Ron LeFlore.

Mets 5, Astros 3 at New York (night game):
Scoring two runs in the eighth inning on doubles by Steve Henderson and Alex Trevino and a single by Frank Taveras, the Mets defeated the Astros, 5-3, for their fifth straight victory. The loss was the Astros' fourth in a row.

Reds 2, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
With Mike LaCoss pitching a shutout, the Reds pinned a loss on Steve Carlton for the third time this season, defeating the Phillies, 2-0. Carlton was tagged for a run in the seventh inning on singles by Hector Cruz and Ray Knight around a pass to Dave Collins. An insurance run followed in the eighth when Dave Concepcion tripled and Dan Driessen singled.

Giants 8, Cubs 5 at San Francisco (day game):
Enjoying his biggest game since joining the Giants, Joe Pettini contributed four hits to the attack in a victory over the Cubs. Vida Blue made his first start for the Giants since June 27 and left after five innings on the short end of a 3-2 score. The Cubs were ahead, 5-4, in the eighth when the Giants rallied for four runs, the last two coming on a double by Pettini.
