Orioles 7, Twins 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Driving in four runs with a homer and two singles, Eddie Murray led the Orioles to a 7-2 victory over the Twins. The first baseman put the Orioles in front in the first inning with a two-run round-tripper and hit a run-scoring single in the third frame. Benny Ayala stroked a sacrifice fly in the same frame. Murray picked up his fourth RBI in the fifth with another single.
White Sox 5, Royals 3 at Chicago (day game):
Two homers by Wayne Nordhagen lifted the White Sox to a 5-3 triumph over the Royals. Nordhagen snapped a 3-3 tie with a round-tripper in the sixth inning and provided insurance with a circuit clout in the eighth.
[DH] A's 11, Indians 3 (day game) / Indians 4, A's 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Dividing a doubleheader, the A's won the first game, 11-3, as Dave Revering, Jeff Newman and Wayne Gross cracked homers, and the Tribe captured the nightcap, 4-2, behind the five-hit hurling of Len Barker. Revering connected for a pair of circuit clouts in the first game -- a solo shot in the fourth inning and two-run blast in the eighth. Newman drilled a bases-empty drive in the fourth and Gross connected for a three-run swat in the ninth. The Tribe broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning of the second game on a walk to Mike Hargrove, single by Toby Harrah and two-run double by Joe Charboneau.
Tigers 4, Mariners 3 at Detroit (day game):
A three-run outburst in the seventh inning carried the Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Mariners. Tom Brookens opened the stanza with a double and went to third on a sacrifice by Jim Lentine, who reached first when losing pitcher Rick Honeycutt tried unsuccessfully to catch Brookens at third. Lou Whitaker then singled, scoring Brookens, to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. A single by Ricky Peters drove in Lentine. Peters also came around on a single by Alan Trammell and groundout by Al Cowens.
Brewers 2, Yankees 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Three-hit pitching by Moose Haas carried the Brewers to a 2-0 triumph over the Yankees. The Brewers scored in the fourth inning on a leadoff single by Sixto Lezcano and double by Dick Davis. Their other marker followed in the seventh frame when Paul Molitor singled, moved to second on a single by Don Money, stole third and registered on a sacrifice fly by Cecil Cooper.
Red Sox 6, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Glenn Hoffman drove in four runs with a homer and single to spark a 13-hit attack as the Red Sox prevailed over the Rangers, 6-4. The Red Sox scored three times in the second inning on doubles by Carlton Fisk and Dwight Evans and Hoffman's homer. Hoffman singled home two more runs in the fifth.
Blue Jays 3, Angels 1 at Toronto (day game):
Jim Clancy and Mike Barlow combined on a four-hitter and Damaso Garcia doubled home two runs to pace the Blue Jays to a 3-1 victory over the Angels. In the first inning, Alfredo Griffin doubled, went to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Otto Velez. Barry Bonnell and Lloyd Moseby led off the sixth with consecutive singles and, two outs later, Garcia hit his double to give the Jays a 3-0 margin.
Cardinals 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Silvio Martinez pitched a seven-hitter in a route-going performance as the Cardinals defeated the Dodgers, 4-1. The Redbirds scored a run in their first turn at bat on a double by Leon Durham and single by George Hendrick. After a single by Tommy Herr in the third, Keith Hernandez drilled a homer.
Expos 6, Braves 5 at Montreal (day game):
Driving in three runs with a homer and double, Ellis Valentine paced a 6-5 victory over the Braves, extending the Expos' winning streak to six games. The Expos were trailing, 3-0, in the third inning, when Andre Dawson extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a two-out single and Valentine followed with a round-tripper. In the fifth, winning pitcher Charlie Lea tripled for his first major league hit and Dawson doubled to tie the score at 3-3. Valentine then put the Expos ahead, 4-3, with a two-bagger and scored on a single by Warren Cromartie. A double by Chris Speier accounted for the Expos' final run in the sixth.
Astros 3, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
A leadoff homer by Cesar Cedeno in the 10th inning lifted the Astros to a 3-2 triumph over the Mets. The victory ended the Astros' four-game losing skein and snapped the Mets' four-game winning string. Joe Sambito hurled 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief to pick up the victory.
Phillies 8, Reds 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
Lonnie Smith reached base three times on a walk and two singles, stole three bases and scored three runs to spark the Phillies to an 8-4 decision over the Reds. The Phillies broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning, ignited by Smith's bunt single and highlighted by four walks and a three-run double by Bob Boone. In all, three Cincinnati pitchers issued nine passes to hurt the Reds, who outhit the Phillies, 11-7.
[DH] Padres 5, Pirates 2 (day game) / Padres 4, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Padres extended their winning streak to eight games by sweeping a doubleheader from the Pirates, 5-2 and 4-1. John Curtis scattered five hits in going the distance in the opener as the Padres broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with two runs on a double by Dave Winfield and single by Willie Montaaez. Bob Shirley and Rollie Fingers combined on a four-hitter in the second contest as the Padres registered three runs in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Bill Fahey, bases-loaded walk to Shirley and RBI single by Gene Richards.
[DH] Cubs 3, Giants 2 (day game) / Cubs 3, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The Cubs swept a twin bill from the Giants by identical scores of 3-2. In the lidlifter, Mike Krukow tossed a three-hitter and drove in two runs with a second-inning single. The pitcher's hit scored Jesus Figueroa, who had doubled, and Lenny Randle, who had walked. The Cubs then added the deciding run in the fourth on an RBI single by Ivan DeJesus. The Cubs trailed, 2-1, in the seventh inning of the nightcap when Cliff Johnson singled and Bill Buckner doubled to put runners on second and third. After Greg Minton replaced Bob Knepper on the hill for the Giants, Jerry Martin smacked a two-run single. Bruce Sutter preserved the victory with his 23rd save.
