Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, White Sox 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A grand slam by Terry Crowley climaxed a five-run fifth inning that powered the Orioles to an 8-2 victory over the White Sox and enabled Steve Stone to receive credit for his 17th win of the season. The Orioles, trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, tied the contest on a bases-loaded single by Al Bumbry. Crowley then followed with the third bases-loaded homer of his career. Doug DeCinces added a solo round-tripper in the eighth.

Red Sox 3, Brewers 1 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox snapped a 1-1 eighth-inning tie with two runs to down the Brewers, 3-1. Glenn Hoffman began the eighth with a single, moved to second on a single by Gary Allenson, went to third on a flyout by Rick Burleson and scored on a single by Dave Stapleton. A throwing error by Milwaukee second baseman Paul Molitor on an infield hit by Fred Lynn permitted Allenson to register an insurance marker.

Angels 5, Mariners 4 at California (night game):
Pushing across two runs in the eighth inning, the Angels sent the Mariners down to their 11th straight defeat, 5-4. The Angels trailed, 4-3, in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Joe Rudi stroked a one-out single and was replaced by pinch-runner Larry Harlow, who moved to third on a single by Bobby Grich. Grich reached second when Leon Roberts bobbled the ball in center field for an error. Harlow scored the tying run as Bobby Clark grounded out and pinch-hitter Jason Thompson then blooped a single to plate Grich.

Indians 8, Blue Jays 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians recorded their 11th victory in the last 13 games by defeating the Blue Jays, 8-5. The Tribe scored three runs in the second inning and four in the third with an accumulation of nine singles. Ross Grimsley, getting relief help from Victor Cruz, received credit for his third straight victory since coming from Montreal.

Royals 6, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
George Brett extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a three-run homer in the fourth inning to spark the Royals to a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Brett's blast followed an infield single by Hal McRae and a walk to Willie Wilson. The next time up, two of Milt Wilcox's pitches forced Brett to hit the dirt. After he flied out to center, Brett rounded first and pointed an accusing finger at Wilcox. The pitcher then threw down his glove and a benches-clearing free-for-all ensued. Brett was ejected from the game. The Royals scored their final three runs in the eighth on an infield hit by Frank White, triple by Wilson and doubles by McRae and Dave Chalk.

Rangers 8, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
First-inning homers by Mickey Rivers and Richie Zisk triggered the Rangers to an 8-1 thrashing of the Yankees. Rivers opened the game with a round-tripper. After Bump Wills doubled and scored on a single by Buddy Bell, Zisk delivered a circuit swat. The Rangers added two more tallies in the second with RBIs coming on a double by Rivers and single by Wills.

A's 3, Twins 2 at Oakland (night game):
Three-hit pitching by Rick Langford enabled the A's to edge the Twins, 3-2. The A's were behind, 2-1, before rallying for two runs in the seventh inning. Mario Guerrero walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice, reached third on a single by Dave McKay and came home on a squeeze bunt by Larry Cox. Jim Essian then delivered a single that registered McKay with the game-winning marker.

Braves 6, Dodgers 4 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by Glenn Hubbard climaxed a Garrison finish as the Braves scored five runs after two were out in the ninth inning to defeat the Dodgers, 6-4. The Braves trailed, 4.1, and after the first two batters were retired in the ninth, Jeff Burroughs reached first base on an error by third baseman Ron Cey. After pinch-hitter Mike Lum walked and pinch-hitter Charlie Spikes singled home one run, Steve Howe replaced Rick Sutcliffe on the hill and was greeted by a run-scoring single by Jerry Royster. Don Stanhouse then took over from Howe and was tagged for Hubbard's big blast.

Cubs 11, Pirates 3 at Chicago (day game):
Jerry Martin hit two homers and batted in four runs in leading the Cubs to an 11-3 rout of the Pirates. Martin hit his first round-tripper with two men on base in the third inning. Cliff Johnson and Martin had consecutive solo shots in the fifth.

Reds 9, Padres 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Blasting off with three runs in the first inning, the Reds went on to a 9-2 victory over the Padres. The Reds took a 3-0 lead in their first turn at bat on RBI singles by Ken Griffey, George Foster and Johnny Bench and added a second-inning marker on a sacrifice fly by Dave Collins. The Reds exploded for five tallies in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Griffey, two-run double by Dan Driessen and two-run homer by Dave Concepcion.

Giants 9, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Reliever Gary Lavelle pitched four scoreless innings, his longest stint of the season, to get credit for the victory as the Giants whipped the Astros, 9-3. The Giants trailed, 3-1, going into the fifth inning but loaded the bases on three walks and scored four runs. Singles by Max Venable and Bill North each drove in a run to tie the score before Jack Clark hit a two-run single. Mike Sadek singled home two tallies in the fifth and Mike Ivie added a two-run double in the eighth.

Expos 11, Mets 5 at Montreal (night game):
Scoring early and often, the Expos gave Dick Williams his 1,000th victory as major league manager by thumping the Mets, 11-5. Gary Carter drove in three runs and Rodney Scott, Andre Dawson and Larry Parrish knocked in two apiece. Parrish accounted for his two RBIs with a homer and Scott with a triple.
