Orioles 4, White Sox 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Homers by Ken Singleton and Eddie Murray powered the Orioles to a 4-1 victory over the White Sox. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Al Bumbry singled, went to second on a single by Rich Dauer and scored on a double by Singleton. Dauer doubled and Singleton homered in the third. Murray hit a solo swat in the fifth.

Brewers 9, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Cecil Cooper went 4-for-5 to raise his average to .347, scored three runs and drove in two to pace the Brewers to a 9-4 victory over the Red Sox. The Brewers snapped a 4-4 tie with three runs in the seventh inning. Singles by Sixto Lezcano and Dick Davis and a double by Sal Bando accounted for the RBIs. The Brewers added two in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Robin Yount and Cooper and a sacrifice fly by Ben Oglivie.

Angels 8, Mariners 3 at California (night game):
A seven-run outburst in the seventh inning lifted the Angels to an 8-3 decision over the Mariners. Jason Thompson, Bobby Grich and Bobby Clark began the inning with singles, Clark's hit scoring Thompson. After Byron McLaughlin replaced Rob Dressler on the hill, Grich scored on a bunt by Bert Campaneris when McLaughlin threw late to the plate. Dan Whitmer followed with another bunt and McLaughlin threw late to third, loading the bases. An error by Tom Paciorek then permitted a run to score and Carney Lansford climaxed the inning with a three-run homer.

Indians 5, Blue Jays 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning produced the go-ahead run as the Indians defeated the Blue Jays, 5-2. After the Jays' Doug Ault tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, Rick Manning opened the bottom of the frame with a single and took second on a sacrifice by jack Brohamer. When Jerry Dybzinski walked, Jerry Garvin replaced Jesse Jefferson on the hill for the Blue Jays. Miguel Dilone flied out, but Garvin then issued a walk to Jorge Orta to load the bases and followed with a walk to Mike Hargrove on a 3-1 pitch. Dilone cracked a two-run single in the eighth for the Tribe's final tallies.

Royals 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Royals shaded the Tigers, 5-4. The Royals were behind, 3-1, when Frank White began the fifth inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Jamie Quirk. George Brett then extended his hitting streak to 19 games by lining a single off first baseman John Wockenfuss's glove and Darrell Porter tied the score with a ground single to center. Willie Aikens followed with a sacrifice fly to cap the outburst. The Royals picked up their winning run in the ninth on singles by Brett, Porter and John Wathan.

Yankees 2, Rangers 1 at New York (night game):
Combining on a five-hitter, Rudy May and Rich Gossage pitched the Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Rangers. The Yankees scored once in the fifth when Willie Randolph singled, stole second and came in on a single by Bobby Murcer. Jim Spencer drilled a homer for the winning run in the sixth. Richie Zisk cracked a homer for the Rangers in the ninth with two out to bring on Gossage, who got the final out.

A's 3, Twins 1 at Oakland (day game):
A three-run outburst in the seventh inning lifted the A's to a 3-1 triumph over the Twins. The A's trailed, 1-0, when Wayne Gross began the seventh with a single. Orlando Gonzalez sacrificed and after a walk to Tony Armas, Jim Essian singled to plate Gross. Mario Guerrero followed with a single to put the A's ahead, 2-1. An error by first baseman Ron Jackson then allowed the final run to score.

Dodgers 6, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Dusty Baker and Ron Cey clouted homers to highlight the Dodgers' 6-2 victory over the Braves. Baker, who had four hits in the game, rapped a solo shot in the third inning. Cey put the game on ice with a three-run smash in the ninth. Don Sutton. who pitched seven innings, recorded his eighth victory of the season and 225th of his career while increasing his lifetime mark against the Braves to 33-12.

[DH] Pirates 9, Cubs 7 (day game) / Pirates 2, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
The Pirates ended a six-game losing skein by sweeping a doubleheader from the Cubs, 9-7 and 2-0. The first game was knotted at 6-6 when Phil Garner opened the Bucs' ninth with a single and went to third on a safe bunt by Manny Sanguillen past Cubs first baseman Larry Biittner. After a wild pitch moved Sanguillen to second, Omar Moreno was walked intentionally to load the bases. Tim Foli followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Garner. As Dave Parker struck out, Sanguillen and Moreno executed a double steal and both scored when catcher Tim Blackwell's throw to third sailed into left field. Bert Blyleven and Grant Jackson combined on a seven-hit shutout in the nightcap. The only runs came in the fifth inning when Steve Nicosia doubled and Dale Berra followed with a homer.

Reds 4, Padres 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Completing the four-game series sweep, the Reds shaded the Padres, 4-3. Dan Driessen led off the ninth inning with a walk, took second on a sacrifice by Joe Nolan and scored the winning run when Dave Concepcion doubled. The Padres had men in scoring position in every inning but stranded 13 baserunners.

Astros 1, Giants 0 at Houston (night game):
Scattering six hits, Ken Forsch pitched the Astros to a 1-0 victory over the Giants. The game's lone run came in the sixth inning when, with one out, Rafael Landestoy, Enos Cabell and Terry Puhl stroked successive singles.

Expos 4, Mets 1 at Montreal (night game):
Although needing relief help from Elias Sosa, Scott Sanderson received credit for his 12th victory as the Expos downed the Mets, 4-1. The Expos scored in the first inning when Ron LeFlore walked, stole second and came home on a single by Andre Dawson. Larry Parrish cracked a two-run homer in the second to break a 1-1 deadlock. The final Montreal tally came in the fifth when LeFlore singled, stole second and tallied on a single by Rodney Scott.

Cardinals 14, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Putting on one of their best scoring displays of the season, the Cardinals mangled the Phillies, 14-0, behind the three-hit hurling of Bob Sykes. Tommy Herr tripled to open the game and scored on a single by Leon Durham. Before the side could be retired, the Redbirds registered four more times on a pass to Keith Hernandez, double by Ted Simmons, pass to George Hendrick, single by Ken Oberkfell and errors by Garry Maddox and Bob Boone. The Cards then poured it on with seven runs in the third. Simmons had four hits in five trips for four RBIs.
