White Sox 5, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
Lamar Johnson drove in three runs and Bruce Kimm added two to account for all the White Sox scoring in a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox. Kimm knocked in his pair with a double in the second inning. Johnson broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring single in the fifth and decided the outcome with another single for two runs in the seventh.
Angels 8, Twins 2 at California (night game):
Getting five-hit pitching from Frank Tanana, the Angels extended their winning streak to six games with an 8-2 victory over the Twins, who lost their ninth straight. After the Twins counted their pair in the second inning, the Angels scored three runs in the fourth. Dan Ford doubled and scored on a single by Don Baylor. Joe Rudi then put the Angels in front with a homer for the 1,400th hit of his career.
Brewers 4, Indians 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
A single by Sal Bando in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and Moose Haas went on to post his 10th complete game of the season, pitching the Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the Indians. A single by Gorman Thomas, infield out and intentional pass to Sizto Lezcano preceded Bando's game-winning hit. A double by Ed Romero, infield out and sacrifice fly by Paul Molitor added an insurance run in the seventh inning.
Orioles 4, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Steve Stone gained his 18th victory of the season when the Orioles broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Yankees, 4-2. Winning their eighth straight, the Orioles pulled within 3½ games of the Yankees in the East Division. Oscar Gamble homered for the Yankees' pair in the first inning and Al Bumbry hit a matching drive for the Orioles in the third. Breaking the tie in the eighth, Rich Dauer doubled and scored on a triple by Ken Singleton. John Lowenstein ran for Singleton and scored an insurance run on a single by Terry Crowley.
A's 2, Mariners 1 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Norris allowed only three hits, traveled the route for the 17th time this season and won his 15th game, pitching the A's to a 2-1 victory over the Mariners. The A's decided Norris' duel with Rick Honeycutt in the third inning. Mario Guerrero singled and stopped at third on a double by Dave McKay. Jeff Cox laid down a squeeze bunt, scoring Guerrero. McKay took third on the play and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a groundout by Rickey Henderson.
Rangers 4, Tigers 3 at Texas (night game):
After the Rangers rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to tie the score, Johnny Grubb hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 10th to beat the Tigers, 4-3. In the ninth, Rusty Staub drove in a run with a double and two scored on a single by Mickey Rivers to send the game into overtime.
Blue Jays 4, Royals 3 at Toronto (night game):
A single by pinch-hitter Steve Braun in the 11th inning drove in Alfredo Griffin and enabled the Blue Jays to snap a seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Royals, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. Griffin led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Damaso Garcia. After an intentional pass to Al Woods, Braun laced his single. George Brett had one hit in five trips and extended his batting streak to 22 games for the Royals.
Giants 5, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Jack Clark hit a three-run homer and accounted for another run with a sacrifice fly to lead the Giants to a 5-4 victory over the Braves.
[DH] Cubs 3, Expos 1 (day game) / Expos 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run homer by Tim Blackwell in the fifth inning carried the Cubs to a 3-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Expos came back to win the second game, 4-3. Bruce Sutter picked up his 24th save of the season in the opener, after replacing Rick Reuschel with two out in the ninth inning, but the Cubs' relief ace was the loser of the nightcap. With the score tied, 3-3, Sutter was on the mound in the eighth inning when Tony Bernazard beat out an infield hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Andre Dawson and scored the Expos' winning run on a single by Ellis Valentine.
Dodgers 9, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Dodgers erupted for seven runs in the second inning, three scoring on a homer by Ron Cey, to defeat the Reds, 9-4. Tom Seaver was the victim of the outburst as the Dodgers put together a single by Rick Monday, doubles by Pedro Guerrero, Steve Yeager and Darrel Thomas and a single by Dusty Baker for four runs before Steve Garvey singled and Cey clouted his homer to climax the outburst. The Reds were stopped on their five-game winning streak.
Astros 9, Padres 5 at Houston (night game):
Cesar Cedeno and Luis Pujols batted in seven runs between them to pace the Astros to a 9-5 victory over the Padres. The Astros scored five runs in the fourth inning. one run crossing the plate on a single by Cedeno and three on a triple by Pujols. After the Padres came back to tie the score, Craig Reynolds singled in the seventh, Rafael Landestoy was hit by a pitch and Enos Cabell doubled to put the Astros ahead again. Terry Puhl then drew a walk to load the bases and Cedeno cleared the sacks with a double.
Pirates 4, Phillies 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Pirates extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-1 victory over the Phillies. Ed Ott hit a homer in the second inning and drove in another run with an infield out in the seventh. In between, the Pirates scored on sacrifice flies by Omar Moreno and Mike Easler. John Candelaria and Kent Tekulve combined on an eight-hitter for the Pirates, with the Phillies' run coming in the first inning on a pass to Lonnie Smith, single by Pete Rose and sacrifice fly by Mike Schmidt.
Cardinals 9, Mets 6 at St. Louis (night game):
After the Mets scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead, the Cardinals rallied to gain a 9-6 victory. The Mets' big inning included doubles by Frank Taveras and Lee Mazzilli, four singles and two stolen bases. The Cards came back with three runs in the sixth on a hit batsman, single by Mike Phillips, an infield out by Dane Iorg, singles by Tommy Herr and Tony Scott and an infield out by Keith Hernandez.
