Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 8, Red Sox 7 at Detroit (night game):
A throwing error by Boston shortstop Rick Burleson allowed two runs to score in the eighth inning and give the Tigers an 8-7 victory over the Red Sox. The Tigers were behind, 7-6, when Mark Wagner opened the eighth with a single and was forced at second on Lou Whitaker's attempted sacrifice. Ricky Peters beat out an infield hit and then both runners scored when Burleson threw wildly to first base after fielding Tom Brookens' grounder. Fred Lynn hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Sox ahead, 7-6, after Richie Hebner smacked a pinch-homer in the third to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead.

Orioles 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Extending their winning streak to 10 games, the Orioles edged the Royals, 2-1, as Dennis Martinez scattered eight hits in going the distance. The Birds broke a 1-1 tie on a leadoff homer by Eddie Murray in the sixth inning. The Royals' George Brett extended his hitting streak to 24 games with a first-inning single.

Yankees 3, White Sox 1 at New York (night game):
Aurelio Rodriguez belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Yankees to a 3-1 triumph over the White Sox. Rodriguez' blow followed a one-out double by Lou Piniella and snapped a 1-1 tie. The Yankees' other run came in the fourth on a round-tripper by Reggie Jackson, the 400th of his career.

Phillies 8, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
This game was suspended after 10 innings because of darkness with the score tied, 5-5, and was completed on August 12.

Braves 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
A three-run uprising in the eighth inning carried the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Jerry Royster reached first base on a fielder's choice in the eighth and took second on a single by Rafael Ramirez. A single by Gary Matthews scored Royster and Charis Chambliss followed with a double to chase home two more runs. Rick Camp came on in the ninth to get the final two outs for the save after L.A. scored two runs.

Pirates 2, Mets 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
In a game called with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning because of rain, the Pirates shaded the Mets, 2-1. The Bucs scored both their runs in the second inning on a single by Willie Stargell, double by Bill Madlock, sacrifice fly by Lee Lacy and RBI groundout by Ed Ott.

Reds 1, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Ken Griffey singled home the winning run in the seventh inning and then saved the game by throwing out the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the frame as the Reds triumphed over the Padres, 1-0. The Reds tallied in the seventh when Dave Collins singled, stole second, moved to third on an infield out and came home when Griffey grounded a single to right. The Padres had the tying run on third with one out in the seventh when Griffey caught Ozzie Smith's fly ball and made a perfect one-hop throw to catcher Joe Nolan to double up Rollie Fingers attempting to score.

Giants 5, Astros 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Vida Blue received credit for his first victory since coming off the disabled list, combining with reliever Greg Minton to pitch the Giants over the Astros, 5-4. The Giants broke a 2-2 tie in the third on an RBI single by Mike Ivie and scored two runs in the fourth on a throwing error by Houston first baseman Art Howe with the bases loaded.

Cardinals 16, Expos 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Blasting off for eight runs in the first inning, the Cardinals massacred the Expos, 16-0, and Bob Sykes posted his second consecutive shutout with a four-hitter. Tommy Herr began the big inning with a walk and Tony Scott followed with a hit-and-run single and then stole second. A sacrifice fly by Keith Hernandez plated Herr and a single by Ted Simmons registered Scott. Leon Durham then made it 4-0 with a homer. The fifth run came in on a single by Sykes and, after a walk to Herr loaded the bases, Scott cleared the sacks with a triple.
