Indians 2, Rangers 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A two-run homer by Toby Harrah in the sixth inning proved decisive as the Indians edged the Rangers, 2-1. Harrah's shot came with two out and plated Alan Bannister, who led off the frame with a two-bagger. Rick Waits yielded six hits over 8 2/3 innings to gain the victory. Victor Cruz got the final out and recorded his eighth save.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
The return of Mark Fidrych lured a sellout crowd of 48,361 to Tiger Stadium, but the Red Sox spoiled the righthander's comeback to the major leagues with a 5-4 victory. Jim Dwyer snapped a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning with a homer. After a shaky start, Fidrych settled down and pitched well until Dwyer's blast. Two of Boston's runs were unearned as the result of a second-inning error by Detroit shortstop Mark Wagner.

Royals 4, Orioles 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning forced home the winning run as the Royals shaded the Orioles, 4-3, ending Baltimore's 10-game winning streak. Frank White was hit by a pitch to open the stanza. After two out, a single by U.L. Washington moved White to second and brought on Tim Stoddard in relief of Scott McGregor. George Brett received an intentional walk to load the bases and Amos Otis then strolled on a 3-2 pitch. Brett extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a single and triple.

[DH] Blue Jays 3, Brewers 1 (night game) / Blue Jays 5, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Blue Jays swept a doubleheader from the Brewers, capturing the lidlifter, 3-1, and winning the nightcap, 5-4. The first game was tied, 1-1, when the Blue Jays loaded the bases in the eighth inning on a single by Otto Velez, walk to John Mayberry and Barry Bonnell being hit by a pitch. Lloyd Moseby then lined a single to center that produced two runs. The Blue Jays trailed, 4-3, going into the ninth inning of the second game when Roy Howell opened with a single and, two outs later, Doug Ault singled and Ernie Whitt followed with a two-run triple.

Twins 3, A's 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A ninth-inning homer by Glenn Adams lifted the Twins to a 3-2 victory over the A's. The designated hitter's smash came with one out and broke a 2-2 tie. The A's had deadlocked the contest in the top of the eighth on a solo homer by Wayne Gross.

Yankees 8, White Sox 4 at New York (night game):
Ruppert Jones slammed a bases-loaded homer in the 10th inning to power the Yankees to an 8-4 decision over the White Sox. The game was tied, 4-4. when Aurelio Rodriguez drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a pinch-single by Jim Spencer. After Willie Randolph was walked intentionally, Jones delivered the first grand slam of his career on a 3-2 pitch.

Angels 9, Mariners 6 at Seattle (night game):
After trailing, 5-2, the Angels came on to defeat the Mariners, 9-6. The game was tied, 6-6, in the seventh inning when the Angels scored three runs. Rod Carew batted in the tie-breaking tally with a double and two other runs scored on an error by Seattle catcher Jerry Narron and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Grich. The Angels took a 6-5 lead in the sixth with the aid of a three-run homer by Bert Campaneris, but the Mariners tied the count in their half with a circuit clout by Jim Anderson.

Phillies 5, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Phillies won twice from the Cubs, capturing the previous day's suspended game, 8-5, in 15 innings, and taking the regularly-scheduled contest, 5-2, as Steve Carlton notched his 18th victory. The suspended game was stopped after 10 innings because of darkness with the score tied, 5-5. After play resumed, Larry Bowa opened the 15th with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Del Unser, reached third on an infield out and, after Pete Rose was intentionally walked, scored on a single by Bake McBride. Mike Schmidt followed with a triple for two more runs. The regularly-scheduled game was tied, 2-2, when Bob Boone opened the eighth inning with a homer. The Phillies then scored two more runs on a single by Rose, triple by McBride and single by Schmidt.

Braves 7, Dodgers 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run pinch-homer by Jeff Burroughs in the ninth inning rallied the Braves to a 7-6 triumph over the Dodgers. The Braves were behind, 6-4, when Biff Pocoroba drew a leadoff walk and Brian Asselstine singled. One out later, Burroughs drove the ball into the left field seats.

Mets 3, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Ray Burris and Neil Allen combined on a five-hitter as the Mets downed the Pirates, 3-1. The game was scoreless after six innings, but Lee Mazzilli and Claudell Washington opened the Mets' seventh with singles and advanced on a sacrifice by Steve Henderson. Alex Trevino then lashed a two-run single. The Mets picked up another marker in the ninth on an inside-the-park homer by Henderson. After Mike Easler opened the Pirates' ninth with a round-tripper, Allen came on to record his 21st save.

Reds 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
A three-run homer by Ron Oester and three-hit pitching by Joe Price carried the Reds to a 3-2 victory over the Padres. The Reds trailed, 1-0, when Johnny Bench drew a two-out walk in the seventh inning. Dave Concepcion followed with a single and Oester then drilled his round-tripper.

Giants 2, Astros 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Allen Ripley and Gary Lavelle combined on a shutout as the Giants triumphed over the Astros, 2-0. Ripley allowed six hits before leaving the game at the start of the eighth inning because of a pulled hamstring and Lavelle came on to notch the save.

Expos 4, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
The league's first triple play of season highlighted the Expos' 4-0 victory over the Cardinals. In the fourth inning, with Keith Hernandez on second and Ted Simmons on first, George Hendrick lined to third baseman Larry Parrish, who relayed to second baseman Rodney Scott to double Hernandez. Scott then threw to first baseman Warren Cromartie to complete the triple killing. Fred Norman, Elias Sosa and Woodie Fryman combined on the shutout. The Expos scored in the top of the fourth when Ellis Valentine singled, stole second and came in on a double by Gary Carter.
