Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 14, Rangers 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Banging out four hits, Alan Bannister paced a 19-hit attack that carried the Indians to a 14-3 rout of the Rangers. The Indians bunched a pass, three singles and a double by Ron Hassey for three runs in the first inning. The Indians went on to score in each of the next four frames, with a single by Miguel Dilone accounting for two of their five tallies in the fifth.

Tigers 2, Red Sox 1 at Detroit (night game):
Despite being outhit, 11-4, the Tigers defeated the Red Sox, 2-1. The Tigers scored both runs in the sixth inning when Steve Kemp singled and reached third when Boston second baseman Dave Stapleton made a wild throw on an attempted forceout on a grounder by John Wockenfuss. Steve Kemp scored on a grounder by Al Cowens and Wockenfuss registered on a single by Mark Wagner. The Red Sox loaded the bases with none out in the eighth and ninth innings but failed to score. Tigers reliever Aurelio Lopez struck out the side with the sacks full in the eighth and then, in the ninth, Tony Perez lined into a double play and Carlton Fisk struck out.

Royals 6, Orioles 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Blasting off for four runs in the first inning, the Royals went on to a 6-1 decision over the Orioles. Willie Wilson led off with a triple and George Brett extended his hitting streak to 26 games with a run-scoring single. After Brett stole second and Darrell Porter walked, Willie Aikens unloaded a three-run homer.

Brewers 5, Blue Jays 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Rallying for three runs in the ninth inning, the Brewers swept past the Blue Jays, 5-4. The Brewers trailed, 4-2, when Sal Bando led off with a home run. A walk to Charlie Moore sent Jackson Todd to the showers in favor of Jerry Garvin. After Jim Gantner sacrificed, Joey McLaughlin replaced Garvin on the hill for the Jays. Paul Molitor walked and Robin Yount stroked a single to center to plate Moore with the tying run. McLaughlin then was derricked in favor of Mike Willis, who struck out Cecil Cooper, but Gorman Thomas reached first on an error by Jays third baseman Roy Howell, loading the bases. Ben Oglivie then lined the game-winning single to right.

A's 6, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A four-run uprising in the sixth inning propelled the A's to a 6-2 victory over the Twins. Trailing, 1-0, the A's tied the score when Rickey Henderson singled, stole second and came home on a single by Dwayne Murphy. Mitchell Page then singled and Wayne Gross followed with a three-run homer.

White Sox 4, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Rich Dotson spaced seven hits in hurling the White Sox to a 4-1 triumph over the Yankees. The White Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on doubles by Leo Sutherland and Chet Lemon. Glenn Borgmann stroked a sacrifice fly in the third and Wayne Nordhagen and Jim Morrison lifted consecutive sacrifice flies in the fifth.

Angels 10, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
A six-run explosion in the 10th inning gave the Angels a 10-4 victory over the Mariners. Bobby Clark, Rod Carew and Carney Lansford hit singles to break a 4-4 tie. After a double by Don Baylor added two tallies, Bobby Grich capped the outburst with a three-run homer.

Cubs 2, Phillies 1 at Chicago (day game):
A sacrifice fly by Jerry Martin in the ninth inning produced the winning run as the Cubs shaded the Phillies, 2-1. After Mike Schmidt tied the game in the top of the ninth with a homer, Ivan DeJesus opened the bottom of the frame with a walk and reached second on a single by Bill Buckner. After Steve Dillard walked to load the bases, Ron Reed replaced Dick Ruthven on the mound for the Phillies and Martin then drove a fly ball to center.

Braves 2, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Scattering five hits, Tommy Boggs pitched the Braves to a 2-0 victory over the Dodgers. The Braves scored their runs in the second inning when Dale Murphy singled and Glenn Hubbard followed with a homer.

Mets 5, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Lee Mazzilli and Jerry Morales drove in two runs apiece to lift the Mets to a 5-3 victory over the Pirates. The Mets were outhit, 12-4, but Mazzilli doubled home two runs in the first inning and Morales knocked in the third tally with a sacrifice fly. Morales was credited with another RBI that broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth when Bucs shortstop Dale Berra erred on his ground ball. Dan Norman then hit into a forceout that plated the Mets' final run.

Reds 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Reds drove into first place in the West Division with a 4-3 triumph over the Padres as Mike LaCoss and Mario Soto combined on a three-hitter. The Reds trailed, 3-2, when Ron Oester led off the eighth inning with a single and Ray Knight followed with a homer. The Padres' runs came in the sixth on a three-run homer by Jerry Mumphrey.

Giants 6, Astros 5 at San Francisco (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Giants triumphed over the Astros, 6-5, in 12 innings. Jack Clark led off with a single and went to third on a single by Darrell Evans. After Mike Ivie lined out, Rennie Stennett followed with the game-winning single. The Astros had scored two runs in the top of the 11th, but the Giants came back in the bottom of the frame when a double by Stennett and single by Jim Wohlford drove in the tying tallies. Mike Rowland, who pitched the 12th inning, picked up his first big league victory.

Cardinals 7, Expos 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Driving in three runs, including two with a seventh-inning double that a snapped 4-4 tie, Ken Oberkfell led the Cardinals to a 7-5 decision over the Expos. Bob Forsch began the seventh with a safe bunt and reached third when first baseman Warren Cromartie and second baseman Rodney Scott mishandled a bunt by Tony Scott, who took second. Oberkfell then slammed his two-bagger. George Hendrick drove in the final run of the frame with a grounder.
