Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Saved by Rich Gossage, the Yankees edged the Orioles, 4-3, to open up a 3½-game lead in the East Division. Willie Randolph started the scoring for the Yankees, hitting a homer on loser Mike Flanagan's first pitch. Al Bumbry came back with a homer off Tommy John in the Orioles' half. Reggie Jackson broke the tie with a two-run smash in the fourth and the Yankees added what proved to be the deciding run in the fifth when Bobby Brown beat out a bunt, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Randolph and scored on a single by Rick Cerone. Gossage relieved during the Orioles' rally in the seventh and pitched hitless relief over the last 2 1/3 innings.
Red Sox 8, White Sox 5 at Chicago (night game):
Dave Stapleton drove in two runs and scored two to lead the attack of the Red Sox in an 8-5 victory over the White Sox. Stapleton knocked in the first run with a double in the first inning and added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Brewers 4, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Sixto Lezcano and Dick Davis hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to lift the Brewers to a 4-1 victory over the Indians. In addition to the round-trippers, a single by Paul Molitor and double by Cecil Cooper accounted for the Brewers' run in the first inning, and their final tally counted in the ninth on doubles by Davis and Sal Bando. Three errors by Bando at third base in one inning resulted in the Indians' run off Mike Caldwell.
Rangers 6, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Although tagged for 13 hits, Jon Matlack lasted the route and pitched the Rangers to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. The Rangers put together singles by Bump Wills, Al Oliver, Buddy Bell and Richie Zisk for two runs in the first inning. Billy Sample singled and Jim Sundberg doubled in the fourth, each driving in a run, before Mickey Rivers capped the Rangers' scoring with a two-run single in the sixth.
Royals 4, Blue Jays 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Extending his batting streak to 27 games, George Brett hit a three-run inside-the-park homer in the first inning to start the Royals off to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Willie Wilson singled and John Wathan walked before Brett hit a looping liner that bounced past Bob Bailor and rolled to the wall in left field. Darrell Porter added what proved to be the Royals' deciding run with a single that scored U.L. Washington in the eighth inning.
Angels 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
A triple by Bert Campaneris and single by pinch-hitter Jason Thompson in the ninth inning provided the Angels with their deciding run in a 5-4 victory over the Twins. Bobby Grich knocked in two tallies with a single in the first and Don Baylor homered with a man on base in the eighth for the Angels' other scoring. Mike Cubbage hit a three-run homer for the Twins.
A's 11, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Rick Langford pitched his 17th consecutive complete game and gained his ninth straight victory as the A's rolled over the Mariners, 11-3. Tony Armas hit two homers for the A's accounting for four runs. Joe Simpson and Willie Horton produced the M's runs with round-trippers.
Dodgers 3, Reds 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Although Tom Seaver allowed only four hits, they included a pair of homers by Dusty Baker, who batted the Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over the Reds. Jerry Reuss, who was the winner, pitched a five-hitter with the Reds' run coming on a round-tripper by Johnny Bench in the second inning. The Dodgers tied the score in the third when Davey Lopes walked, stole second and came home on a single by Pedro Guerrero. Baker broke the tie with a circuit clout in the fourth and clinched the verdict with his second smash in the sixth.
Phillies 8, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Showing recovery from elbow surgery, Larry Christenson made his first start since May 21 and allowed only four hits in six innings to gain credit for an 8-0 victory over the Mets. Tug McGraw finished. Pete Rose collected three singles and raised his career total to 3,500 hits with his second hit in the seventh inning.
Pirates 7, Expos 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Breaking a tie for first place in the East Division, the Pirates moved ahead of the Expos with a 7-3 victory. Mike Easler and Dale Berra homered in the second inning to start the Pirates' scoring. Berra hit a single for another RBI when the Pirates added a pair in the fourth and two more runs scored on wild pitches by Expos reliever John D'Acquisto in the sixth. Jim Bibby, with relief assistance from Kent Tekulve, gained his 15th victory.
Astros 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
With two out in 20th inning, center fielder Jerry Mumphrey failed to catch a fly ball by Terry Puhl for an error that allowed two runs to score and enabled the Astros to defeat the Padres, 3-1. Luis Pujols was safe on a throwing error by shortstop Ozzie Smith to open the stanza and when Art Howe bunted, both runners were safe on pitcher Eric Rasmussen's late throw to second. Rasmussen then retired the next two batters before falling victim to Mumphrey's misplay.
Braves 8, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Blowing a tight game apart, the Braves exploded for six runs in the 13th inning and defeated the Giants, 8-2. The Giants scored their runs on homers by Mike Ivie and Terry Whitfield. The Braves rallied for a tying pair in the seventh. The clubs then matched ciphers until the 13th when the Braves snapped the tie with a run on singles by Bruce Benedict, Jeff Burroughs and Jerry Royster. After a walk to Charlie Spikes, Gary Matthews drove in two runs with a single and Bob Horner followed with a three-run homer.
Cubs 5, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cubs, who scored one of their runs on a balk by Silvio Martinez and another on a wild pitch by Don Hood, defeated the Cardinals, 5-4. Tim Blackwell homered for the Cubs, while Ivan DeJesus had three hits and scored three times. Keith Hernandez drove in three of the Cards' runs with a homer and single.
