Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 4, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
The Yankees' acquisition of Gaylord Perry from the Rangers paid immediate dividends when the veteran righthander, making his first appearance in a New York uniform, pitched five-hit ball over seven innings and gained credit for a 4-1 victory over the Orioles. The Yankees, who pulled 4½ games ahead of the Orioles in the East Division race, scored a run in the first inning when Ruppert Jones singled, stole second and came home on a single by Bobby Murcer. Oscar Gamble added two runs with a homer after another single by Murcer in the fifth. The Orioles then picked up their run with a circuit clout by Terry Crowley, but the Yankees wrapped up the decison with a solo swat by Eric Soderholm in the eighth.

Brewers 10, Indians 5 at Cleveland (day game):
A grand slam by Robin Yount in the second inning started the Brewers off to a 10-5 victory over the Indians. Singles by Dick Davis and Jim Gantner and a pass to Paul Molitor preceded Yount. Gorman Thomas socked a 440-foot drive into the left-center field stands in the third. Joe Charboneau homered for the Indians.

Rangers 12, Tigers 5 at Detroit (day game):
Rusty Staub collected a single, double and homer as one of three Rangers with three hits apiece in a 12-5 victory over the Tigers. Staub scored four runs. Mickey Rivers had a homer and two singles in the attack while Buddy Bell contributed a double and two singles. Richie Zisk added a homer. Steve Kemp whacked a pair of round-trippers for the Tigers.

Royals 11, Blue Jays 5 at Kansas City (night game):
George Brett stroked three singles, extending his batting streak to 28 games, and Larry Gura continued his mastery of the Blue Jays with seven innings of pitching in the Royals' 11-5 victory. Gura raised his career record against the Blue Jays to 9-0 and posted his 17th victory of the season. Brett hit a sacrifice fly for the Royals' initial run in the first inning and then collected his three hits before striking out in the seventh.

A's 8, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Dave Revering, Jeff Newman and Mitchell Page hit homers in support of Steve McCatty's pitching as the A's defeated the Mariners, 8-3. Revering rapped a three-run drive in the first inning. Newman added a run with a single in the first and then matched Revering's three RBIs by connecting for the circuit with a man on base in the fifth. Page added a solo shot in the sixth.

Reds 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Johnny Bench singled in the ninth inning, advanced on a sacrifice by Dave Concepcion and scored on a double by Ron Oester to bring the Reds a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Both Dodgers runs counted in the first inning on singles by Davey Lopes and Bill Russell, a sacrifice fly by Pedro Guerrero and single by Ron Cey. Bench hit a homer in the fourth. George Foster tied the score in the eighth with a single that drove in Dave Collins.

Phillies 11, Mets 6 at New York (day game):
Garry Maddox collected four hits, Mike Schmidt rapped three and six other Phillies had two apiece in an 11-6 victory over the Mets. Maddox batted in two runs and scored two. Bob Boone, who had two hits, drove in three runs. Schmidt homered with a man on base, while Manny Trillo accounted for two RBIs with a homer and single. Craig Swan, coming off the Mets' disabled list, made his first appearance since July 16 and was tagged for 10 hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Pirates 5, Expos 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
After pitching perfect ball for 6 2/3 innings, Bert Blyleven settled for a two-hitter in a 5-0 victory to expand the Pirates' lead to two games over the Expos in the East Division race. Rowland Office singled to spoil Blyleven's bid for the second no-hitter of his career. The veteran righthander hurled a gem while with the Rangers against the Angels in 1977. Rodney Scott accounted for the Expos' other hit with a two-out single in the ninth. In the first inning, when the Pirates scored four times, Tim Foli drove in a run with a groundout and Bill Madlock drove in two runs with a single. Foli homered in the eighth.

Giants 2, Braves 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Vida Blue allowed only three hits and pitched the Giants to a 3-1 victory over the Braves. The Giants scored a run in the fifth inning on a safe bunt by Bill North, a balk and single by Larry Herndon. Darrell Evans then homered in the sixth to produce what proved to be the winning run. Blue's bid for a shutout was spoiled when Bob Horner homered in the seventh.

Cubs 9, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Bill Buckner helped himself to four hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning, to lead the Cubs to a 9-4 victory over the Cardinals. Buckner's homer snapped a string of 23 innings of scoreless pitching by Bob Sykes.
