Orioles 6, Yankees 5 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles moved within 2½ games of first place in the A.L. East by outlasting the Yankees, 6-5. After the Yanks' Oscar Gamble hit a two-run homer in the fourth, the Orioles registered three runs in the bottom of inning on an RBI single by Mark Belanger, run-scoring double by Al Bumbry and sacrifice fly by Rich Dauer. They added three more in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Belanger, RBI single by Bumbry and infield out by Dauer. The Yanks registered three markers in the eighth but Tippy Martinez halted that rally and Tim Stoddard then hurled the ninth to record the save.
[DH] Indians 4, White Sox 2 (night game) / White Sox 7, Indians 2 at Chicago (night game):
The Indians and White Sox split a doubleheader, the Tribe winning the lidlifter, 4-2, behind the three-hit pitching of Len Barker, and the Pale Hose capturing the nightcap, 7-2, as a three-run homer by Kevin Bell climaxed a six-run fourth inning. In the first game, the Indians opened a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a single by Jerry Dybzinski, a stolen base, RBI triple by Jorge Orta and RBI double by Mike Hargrove. Toby Harrah drilled a solo homer in the fifth and the Tribe picked up another marker in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Dybzinski. In the second game, run-scoring singles by Wayne Nordhagen, Bob Molinaro and Glenn Borgmann preceded Bell's round-tripper.
Brewers 12, Tigers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
A grand slam by Gorman Thomas highlighted the Brewers' seventh straight victory, a 12-5 rout of the Tigers. Thomas' blast came in the sixth inning and was immediately followed by a round-tripper by Ben Oglivie. The Brewers registered five runs in the fourth frame on an RBI single by Sixto Lezcano, two-run throwing error by Detroit pitcher Dan Petry, another error by Detroit shortstop Mark Wagner and RBI groundout by Charlie Moore.
Twins 8, Angels 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Pounding out 15 hits, the Twins rolled to an 8-3 victory over the Angels. Minnesota took a 2-0 lead in their first turn at bat on back-to-back triples by John Castino and Jose Morales and an infield out by Pete Mackanin. They upped the margin to 5-0 in the fourth on RBI hits by Bombo Rivera, Dave Edwards and Mike Cubbage. John Castino belted a two-run homer in the seventh.
Royals 6, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
George Brett singled his first three times at bat as he raised his average to .404 and extended his hitting streak to 30 games in helping the Royals to a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. K.C. scored in the first inning on a single by Brett and RBI double by Darrell Porter. The Royals added three runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Porter and two-run homer by Willie Aikens. Dan Quisenberry, who pitched the last 1 2/3 innings, recorded his 26th save.
Cardinals 10, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Ted Simmons belted two homers and also singled twice, sparking an eight-run second inning to pace the Cardinals to a 10-1 rout of the Reds in a game called after 6½ innings because of rain. The first St. Louis run in the second inning came when Keith Smith bounced into a double play. The Cardinals then reeled off seven straight hits before Smith struck out to end the uprising. Simmons' homers came in the fourth and sixth innings.
