Orioles 7, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Scott McGregor recorded his 15th victory as the Orioles moved within 1½ games of the first-place Yankees in the East Division with a 7-1 triumph over the Angels. A double by Rich Dauer drove in two of the Orioles' three runs in the fifth inning. John Lowenstein slugged a solo homer in the sixth and Rick Dempsey doubled home two of the three runs in the seventh.
White Sox 5, Blue Jays 3 at Chicago (night game):
A four-run uprising in the fifth inning carried the White Sox to a 5-3 triumph over the Blue .lays. With the game tied, 1-1, Glenn Borgmann opened the inning with a walk and scored on a triple by Kevin Bell, who came home on a sacrifice fly by Todd Cruz. Singles by Leo Sutherland and Mike Squires and a two-out walk to Lamar Johnson loaded the bases and, after Joey McLaughlin replaced starter Jesse Jefferson on the mound for the Blue Jays, Jim Morrison slapped a two-run single.
Indians 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A three-run homer by Ron Hassey in the first inning was the big blow as the Indians gained a 4-3 victory to snap the Royals' eight-game winning streak. Hassey's blast followed a double by Miguel Dilone and walk to Mike Hargrove. The Tribe added its deciding run in the sixth on a triple by Alan Bannister and double by Rick Manning. The Royals' George Brett went 1-for-4, hitting a solo homer in the fourth, as his batting average dropped to .404.
[DH] Twins 5, Tigers 3 (night game) / Tigers 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Splitting a doubleheader, the Twins won the first game, 5-3, and the Tigers captured the second game, 4-2. A three-run outburst in the seventh inning carried the Twins to victory in the opener. Hosken Powell drilled a one-out double and scored on a single by Ron Jackson. Pete Mackanin then followed with a home run. Jack Morris allowed only one hit -- a one-out single by Rob Wilfong in the first inning -- in hurling the Tigers to triumph in the nightcap. Steve Kemp and Richie Hebner socked solo homers.
Red Sox 5, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Scattering six hits, John Tudor pitched the Red Sox to a 5-1 decision over the A's. The Red Sox took the lead in the second inning on a homer by Jim Rice and added four unearned runs in the fourth following an error by A's third baseman Dave McKay. Glenn Hoffman accounted for two runs with a single. Despite taking the loss, Rick Langford pitched his 18th straight complete game.
Mariners 6, Yankees 4 at Seattle (night game):
A single by Bruce Bochte in the fifth inning snapped a 4-4 tie as the Mariners downed the Yankees, 6-4. The Mariners added an insurance run in the seventh when Julio Cruz homered to greet Ron Guidry, who was making his first relief appearance of the season. The Mariners benefited from two errors to tally four unearned runs in the first. Shane Rawley, who earned his 10th save, bailed himself out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth by striking out Eric Soderholm and Aurelio Rodriguez and retiring Bucky Dent on a line drive to center.
Braves 6, Cubs 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Driving in four runs, including three with a fourth-inning homer, Dale Murphy led the Braves to a 6-4 victory over the Cubs. Murphy had an RBI with a grounder in the second when the Braves took a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Bob Horner singled, Chris Chambliss walked and Murphy ripped his 21st round-tripper.
Astros 12, Pirates 5 at Houston (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Astros pounded the Pirates, 12-5. A two-run double by Cesar Cedeno broke a 2-2 tie and keyed a four-run outburst in the third inning. Cedeno also drove in a run with a sixth-inning double. Terry Puhl rapped four hits and Jose Cruz collected three as the Astros assaulted four Pirates pitchers for 18 blows.
Dodgers 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
A leadoff homer by Steve Garvey in the 10th inning gave the Dodgers a 5-4 triumph over the Expos. The round-tripper broke a 4-4 tie that the Expos had manufactured in the eighth on a double by Andre Dawson, single by Larry Parrish and goundout by Warren Cromartie. The Dodgers scored three times in the eighth. Garvey singled to drive in one run and Steve Yeager singled to plate two others.
Mets 5, Giants 1 at New York (day game):
The Mets broke a seven-game losing streak by defeating the Giants, 5-1. The Mets snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth inning. Mario Ramirez led off with a single and Joel Youngblood drew a one-out walk. One out later, Lee Mazzilli rammed a single, scoring Ramirez. Jerry Morales then doubled to left-center, knocking in the 499th and 500th runs of his career. Claudell Washington capped the outburst with a run-scoring single.
Phillies 9, Padres 8 at Philadelphia (day game):
A triple by Bake McBride in the 17th inning lifted the Phillies to a 9-8 victory over the Padres. After Dave Winfield tied the game at 8-8 in the ninth with a two-run homer, the teams were scoreless until the 17th when Mike Schmidt singled and McBride followed with his three-bagger. Schmidt hit a solo homer in the first inning and added a two-run shot in the third. Larry Bowa had an inside-the-park homer for the Phillies in the sixth.
