Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 5, Angels 2 at California (day game):
Rick Cerone batted in three runs with three singles and Bob Watson drove in two runs with a homer and double to account for the Yankees' RBIs in a 5-2 victory over the Angels. Don Baylor scored one run and batted in one for the Angels.
White Sox 5, Blue Jays 1 at Chicago (night game):
Getting three-hit pitching from Rich Dotson, the White Sox defeated the Blue Jays, 5-1. Todd Cruz batted in two runs, getting one RBI on a grounder with the bases loaded in the second inning and the other with a single in the third.
Royals 3, Indians 2 at Kansas City (night game):
George Brett went hitless in three official trips and dropped to .399, but the Royals defeated the Indians, 3-2. Clint Hurdle knocked in the Royals' first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Indians held a 2-1 lead with two out in the seventh before the Royals rallied. Amos Otis walked, Hurdle drove in the tying run with a double and then scored the deciding run on a single by Frank White. Rich Gale gained his 11th straight victory and Dan Quisenberry earned his 28th save.
Tigers 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Alan Trammell tripled with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and scored when third baseman John Castino threw wildly on an infield hit by Tom Brookens to bring the Tigers a 4-3 victory over the Twins. Jim Lentine, Lou Whitaker and Ricky Peters each singled to fill the sacks and set the stage for Trammell.
Orioles 4, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
Steve Stone gained his 21st victory with the help of relievers Tippy Martinez and Tim Stoddard when the Orioles defeated the A's, 4-2. Dan Graham hit two homers and drove in the Orioles' runs, connecting with two men on base in the second inning and adding an insurance tally with a solo shot in the ninth. Mitchell Page homered for the A's.
Mariners 3, Red Sox 1 at Seattle (night game):
Although deprived of both a shutout and a complete game, Rob Dressler came out a winner when the Mariners defeated the Red Sox, 3-1. Dressler was lifted after Dave Stapleton homered for the Red Sox in the ninth inning. Shane Rawley relieved and gained his 11th save. Ted Cox, who had two hits, scored one run and batted in another for the Mariners.
Rangers 7, Brewers 5 at Texas (night game):
Doubles by Richie Zisk and Jim Sundberg in the eighth inning featured a three-run rally that brought the Rangers a 7-5 victory over the Brewers. Zisk's double as a pinch-hitter drove in Buddy Bell and tied the score at 5-5. One out later, Billy Sample walked and Sundberg followed with a two-run double to provide the Rangers' winning margin.
Braves 7, Cardinals 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Doyle Alexander flirted with a no-hitter for 7 1/3 innings while pitching the Braves to a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals. Terry Kennedy spoiled Alexander's bid with a single and George Hendrick deprived him of a shutout by hitting a homer with two out in the ninth. Dale Murphy led the Braves' attack with four hits, driving in two runs and scoring two. Alexander also helped himself at bat, driving in two runs with a single.
Pirates 2, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Omar Moreno stole second base after walking in the first inning and again after hitting a single in the fifth to set up both Pirates' runs in a 2-1 victory over the Reds.
Astros 1, Cubs 0 at Houston (night game):
Winning his own game, Joe Niekro singled in the 17th inning, scoring Enos Cabell, to bring the Astros a 1-0 victory over the Cubs. Cabell led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice by Terry Puhl. After an intentional pass to Jose Cruz, Denny Walling forced Cruz as Cabell moved to third. Niekro, who pitched two innings in relief, then lofted a long fly over the head of Bill Buckner in left field.
Expos 2, Padres 0 at Montreal (night game):
Bill Gullickson posted his fifth straight victory with the assistance of John D'Acquisto, who gained his first save in a Montreal uniform when the Expos defeated the Padres, 2-0. Gullickson departed after walking Dave Winfield in the ninth inning. The Expos scored both their runs in the fifth, the first run counting on a double by Chris Speier and single by Ron LeFlore, who then stole his 81st base of the season and scored on singles by Rodney Scott and Rowland Office.
Dodgers 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
The Dodgers broke a tie with a run-scoring single by Ron Cey in the eighth inning and defeated the Mets, 4-2. A double by Mike Jorgensen helped the Mets knot the count at 2-2 in the seventh. With one out in the eighth, Jay Johnstone walked and was forced by Dusty Baker. Steve Garvey singled, sending Baker to third, and Cey followed with his game-winning hit.
Giants 6, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Allen Ripley tripled and drove in two runs for the first extra-base hit and first RBIs of his major league career to help himself to victory as the Giants defeated the Phillies, 6-2. With the score 2-2, Darrell Evans and Milt May hit consecutive doubles in the sixth inning to produce the Giants' tie-breaking run. Rennie Stennett then was passed intentionally to bring up Ripley, who surprised everyone with his hit.
