Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 4, Angels 2 at California (day game):
Rallying for two runs in the seventh inning, the Yankees maintained first place in the East Division by defeating the Angels, 4-2. With the Yankees trailing, 2-1, Johnny Oates began the seventh with a double and was safe at third when the Angels threw late to the bag trying to get him on a sacrifice bunt by Aurelio Rodriguez. After Andy Hassler replaced Fred Martinez on the mound, a single by Eric Soderholm tied the score and moved Rodriguez to third. Ruppert Jones then struck out, but Bobby Murcer flied deep to center to score Rodriguez.
Blue Jays 7, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
A four-run outburst in the second inning spurred the Blue Jays to a 7-3 triumph over the White Sox. A homer by Damaso Garcia began the uprising. A double by Lloyd Moseby, triple by Danny Ainge and double by Bob Davis produced two more tallies and the final run of the frame came in when shortstop Todd Cruz dropped a fly ball by Alfredo Griffin.
Royals 7, Indians 5 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals gained the 1,000th victory in their 12-year history, defeating the Indians, 7-5, on the strength of a six-run explosion in the third inning. U.L. The Tigers scored twice in the fourth inning, on a homer by John Wockenfuss, pass to Al Cowens, a stolen base and a single by Duffy Dyer. The deciding run in the seventh counted on a wild pitch by Geoff Zahn. Twins manager Gene Mauch resigned after the game.
Orioles 3, A's 0 at Oakland (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Orioles blanked the A's, 3-0, as Mike Flanagan spaced seven hits in registering his 13th victory.
