Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
A two-run double by Jim Rice in the 11th inning proved decisive as the Red Sox prevailed over the Angels, 4-2. The game was tied, 2-2, when Rick Burleson led off the 11th with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Dave Stapleton. Fred Lynn was intentionally walked and, one out later, Rice doubled to left-center to plate both runners.
Indians 4, Twins 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Spoiling Johnny Goryl's debut as manager of Minnesota, the Indians won, 4-3. A three-run homer by Joe Charboneau was the big blow. Jorge Orta doubled home the first Cleveland run in the third inning and Charboneau connected for the circuit in the fourth.
Royals 9, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Clint Hurdle homered, doubled and singled and drove in two runs to pace the Royals to a 9-3 decision over the Brewers. Hurdle staked K.C. to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a round-tripper and the Royals scored two more in the top of the third on a double by Hal McRae and single by Willie Aikens. Amos Otis' two-run double highlighted a four-run ninth. George Brett went 2-for-4, raising his average to .398.
A's 9, Yankees 1 at Oakland (night game):
The A's snapped their four-game losing streak with a 9-1 rout of the Yankees as Mike Norris recorded his 19th complete game and lowered his league-leading ERA to 2.21. The A's scored three runs in the first inning on a two-run triple by Tony Armas and single by Jim Essian. They added a pair of tallies in the second on a run-scoring single by Rickey Henderson and bases-loaded walk to Dave Revering.
Mariners 10, Orioles 5 at Seattle (night game):
A six-run outburst in the first inning carried the Mariners to a 10-5 triumph over the Orioles. Dan Meyer, Tom Paciorek, Juan Beniquez and Larry Milbourne drove in one run apiece in the big inning and Jim Anderson singled in two. Meyer hit an inside-the-park homer in the second frame to boost the lead to 7-1.
Rangers 5, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (day game):
Johnny Grubb went 3-for-3, including a homer, to pace the Rangers to a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays. The round-tripper came in the second inning and gave Texas a 1-0 lead. The Rangers stretched their lead to 2-0 in the third when Bump Wills walked, stole second and scored on a single by Buddy Bell. RBI singles by Pepe Frias and Mickey Rivers and a run-scoring double-play grounder produced three tallies in the eighth.

The score was 4-4 when Davey Lopes began the L.A. ninth with a walk. Rudy Law then beat out a sacrifice hunt and Lopes reached third when catcher Bob Boone's throw hit Law and caromed down the right field line. Warren Brusstar replaced Dickie Noles for the Phils and was greeted by Dusty Baker's RBI double. Ron Cey followed with another run-scoring two-bagger and Tug McGraw took over for Brusstar. Pinch-hitter Ferguson, with the count 1-0, reached out and slapped the ball to right for a single. The next batter, Bill Russell, was hit by a pitch and the Dodgers shortstop charged the mound. Both benches emptied but no punches were thrown and nobody was injured. Russell and L.A. Manager Tommy Lasorda were ejected.
Braves 8, Pirates 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dale Murphy drove in four runs with a three-run double and a homer and Chris Chambliss clouted a two-run homer to spark the Braves to an 8-6 triumph over the Pirates. Murphy's two-bagger gave Atlanta a 3-0 lead in the first inning and he added a solo round-tripper in the Braves' four-run sixth. Chambliss drilled his circuit clout in the sixth and Bob Horner singled in the Braves' other sixth-inning run.
