Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Combining on a four-hitter, John Tudor and Bob Stanley pitched the Red Sox to a 5-1 verdict over the Angels. The Red Sox scored twice in the fifth inning on an error by California shortstop Bert Campaneris and a double-play grounder. A sacrifice fly by Glenn Hoffman produced a seventh-inning run and Carl Yastrzemski capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the eighth.

Tigers 5, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
Aurelio Lopez pitched six innings of two-hit relief, enabling the Tigers to edge the White Sox, 5-4. The game was tied, 4-4, when Champ Summers began the fifth inning with a single and John Wockenfuss and Tom Corcoran followed with walks to fill the bases. Tom Brookens then delivered a groundout to plate the tie-breaking run.

Twins 5, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A five-run outburst in the fifth inning carried the Twins to a 5-1 decision over the Indians and gave new Manager Johnny Goryl his first major league victory. The Twins collected seven hits in their big inning. Ron Jackson opened the frame with a single, reached second when right fielder Jorge Orta bobbled the ball and scored on a one-out single by Butch Wynegar. After singles by Dave Edwards and Hosken Powell filled the bases, an infield hit by John Castino scored Wynegar. Roy Smalley then bounced a two-run single to left and Jose Morales ended the scoring with an RBI double.

Royals 7, Brewers 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
George Brett went 5-for-5 to raise his average to .407 and Hal McRae drove in four runs to lead the Royals to a 7-6 victory over the Brewers. McRae tripled home two runs in a four-run first inning and singled home two more tallies in the fourth. Dan Quisenberry retired the final two batters of the game to register his 31st save.

A's 3, Yankees 1 at Oakland (night game):
Turning in his 19th straight complete game and his 22nd of the season, Rick Langford pitched the A's to a 3-1 victory over the Yankees. The A's scored twice in the fifth inning. Tony Armas singled and came home on a triple by Mitchell Page, who tallied when a pickoff throw by catcher Rick Cerone sailed into left field. The final A's run came in the seventh on a triple by Armas and sacrifice fly by Jim Essian.

Mariners 2, Orioles 1 at Seattle (night game):
Bruce Bochte and Floyd Bannister were the heroes of the evening as the Mariners triumphed over the Orioles, 2-1. The Mariners first baseman stroked a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and broke a 1-1 tie with a homer in the ninth. Bannister pitched a four-hitter.

Rangers 8, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (day game):
Scoring six runs in the fourth inning, the Rangers defeated the Blue Jays, 8-0. Charlie Hough, who posted the shutout on a five-hitter, was a last-minute replacement for Fergie Jenkins, who was charged the previous day with possession of illegal drugs. Jenkins was scheduled to pitch but was scratched by Manager Pat Corrales at suggestion of league President Lee MacPhail.

Cubs 4, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
A pair of homers by Dave Kingman powered the Cubs to a 4-2 triumph over the Reds. Kingman belted a solo shot in the seventh inning to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead and, after the Reds tied the game in the bottom of the frame, the Cubs' slugger connected for a two-run blast in the eighth following a walk to Bill Buckner.

Padres 8, Mets 6 at New York (day game):
The Padres snapped their four-game losing streak by pushing across two runs in the 18th inning to outlast the Mets, 8-6. Gene Richards began the 18th with a single, stole second, reached third on a sacrifice bunt and, after Dave Winfield was walked intentionally, scored on a single by Willie Montanez. Jerry Mumphrey doubled home Winfield with an insurance run.

Dodgers 8, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Driving in three runs with a single and homer, Dusty Baker paced the Dodgers to an 8-4 victory over the Phillies. The Dodgers exploded for four runs in the third inning, one scoring on Baker's single. Baker then cracked a two-run round-tripper in the fourth.

Braves 4, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Gary Matthews' second homer of the game -- a two-run blast in 10th inning -- lifted the Braves to a 4-2 triumph over the Pirates. Matthews' first circuit clout came with the bases empty in the third inning. His game-winning blow followed a single by Rafael Ramirez in 10th.

Astros 7, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The fourth career grand slam by Cesar Cedeno highlighted a six-run fifth inning that carried the Astros to a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals. Joe Niekro began the big inning with a single, took third on a single by Joe Morgan and scored on a single by Enos Cabell. A single by Jose Cruz loaded the bases and set the stage for Cedeno's big blow. Art Howe followed Cedeno's clout with a double, took third on a flyout and came home on a single by Luis Pujols.
