The Jays then put the game out of the Rangers' reach with three runs in the fourth on singles by Danny Ainge and Ernie Whitt, a triple by Alfredo Griffin and double by Roy Howell.

Giants 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Combining on a two-hitter, Ed Whitson and Greg Minton pitched the Giants to a 1-0 victory over the Expos in a game twice delayed by rain. The Giants' run came in the fourth inning on a walk to Bill North, sacrifice by Larry Herndon and single by Darrell Evans.

Padres 4, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
A three-run uprising in the seventh inning lifted the Padres to a 4-1 victory over the Mets. Broderick Perkins opened the inning with a single and scored on a double by Jerry Mumphrey, who reached third on an infield single by Luis Salazar. A sacrifice fly by Gene Tenace plated Mumphrey. After a pinch-single by Willie Montanez, Rick Wise capped the outburst with an RBI single.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton, with relief help from Tug McGraw, became the first N.L. pitcher to win 20 games as the Phillies edged the Dodgers, 4-3. The game was tied, 3-3, going into the bottom of the eighth when Larr yBowa singled, moved to second on a sacrifice by Bob Boone, reached third on a pinch-single by Keith Moreland and scored as Pete Rose delivered an RBI groundout.

Braves 7, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Braves won their fifth straight game, beating the Pirates, 7-4, as Bob Horner drove in five runs with a homer and double. Horner drilled a three-run round-tripper in the fifth inning and a two-run double in the seventh.

Cardinals 10, Astros 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Making his major league debut, John Martin pitched seven innings of five hit relief to lead the Cardinals to a 10-2 victory over the Astros. The Redbirds broke the game open with a five-run barrage in the third inning. After the first two runs scored, the Astros passed Terry Kennedy intentionally, loading the bases, in order to pitch to Ken Reitz, who wrecked the strategy with a three-run double.
