Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 13, Angels 8 at Baltimore (night game):
Eddie Murray, Rich Dauer and Gary Roenicke each had four hits to lead a club-record 26-hit attack as the Orioles downed the Angels, 13-8. The Orioles also tied club records for most doubles in a game, eight, and for most hits in one inning, collecting nine in the fourth frame. Six of those nine hits were consecutive, all coming off Angels reliever John Montague.
Red Sox 3, A's 2 at Boston (night game):
Pushing across a run in the eighth inning, the Red Sox shaded the A's, 3-2. Jim Dwyer began the inning with a double, moved to third as Tony Perez grounded out and scored on an infield out by Carl Yastrzemski.
Tigers 11, Brewers 7 at Detroit (night game):
The first career grand slam by Champ Summers highlighted a nine-run sixth inning that lifted the Tigers to an 11-7 triumph over the Brewers. Summers' blast, which gave Detroit a 9-6 lead, came after a throwing error by Milwaukee shortstop Robin Yount had loaded the sacks with two out. Al Cowens began the rally with a round-tripper.
Rangers 10, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
Dave Rajsich pitched 8 2/3 innings of one-run relief, enabling the Rangers to overcome the Royals, 10-6. Fergie Jenkins, making his first appearance since being arrested in Toronto for alleged possession of narcotics, lasted only one-third of an inning, allowing five runs on five hits. The Rangers took a 7-6 lead in the fifth frame on a two-run homer by Pat Putnam and added three more markers in the sixth on a solo homer by Mickey Rivers and two-run round-tripper by Al Oliver. George Brett went 1-for-4 as his average dropped to .404.
Yankees 6, Mariners 5 at New York (night game):
A leadoff homer by Bobby Murcer in the seventh inning snapped a 5-5 tie and lifted the Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Mariners. Ron Guidry, who yielded just one hit in relief over the final 3 1/3 innings, picked up his 13th win of the season.
Twins 7, Blue Jays 5 at Toronto (day game):
The Twins and Blue Jays played 14 innings and were tied, 5-5, when the game was suspended because of a 4 p.m. curfew invoked because of a rock concert being held in connection with the Canadian National Exhibition. The game was resumed the following day prior to the regularly-scheduled contest.
Astros 4, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run outburst in the third inning carried the Astros to a 4-1 triumph over the Cubs. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Astros filled the bases in the third on a single by Terry Puhl, walk to Jose Cruz and error by Cubs second baseman Mike Tyson on a grounder by Cesar Cedeno. Denny Walling then drew a walk to force in one run and Alan Ashby followed with a two-run single.
Reds 4, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Paul Moskau posted his first shutout of the season, pitching the Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Pirates. The Reds tallied three times in the third inning. Dave Concepcion singled, stole second and scored on a single by Dan Driessen. Johnny Bench followed with a homer on Rick Rhoden's next pitch. The Reds' final run came in the ninth on a run-scoring single by George Foster.
Cardinals 11, Braves 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Driving in seven runs, Dane Iorg paced the Cardinals to an 11-2 rout of the Braves. Iorg batted in two runs with a first-inning double, knocked in three with a bases-loaded double in the second and stroked a two-run single in the fourth.
