Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Fred Martinez, completing his first game in 16 starts this season, outdueled 21-game winner Steve Stone and pitched the Angels to a 5-0 victory over the Orioles. The Angels, who beat the Orioles for the first time in 10 tries this year, tagged Stone for a run in the first inning on a two-out single by Rod Carew, pass to Jason Thompson and double by Don Baylor. That was enough for Martinez, but the Angels' other scoring included a two-run triple by Rick Miller in the fourth.

Red Sox 6, A's 3 at Boston (night game):
With Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk and Dave Stapleton hitting homers, the Red Sox posted their fifth straight victory, defeating the A's, 6-3. Yastrzemski's round-tapper followed a single by jim Rice in the second inning and gave the veteran star 5,060 total bases for his career, passing Lou Gehrig into eighth place on the major leagues' all-time list.

Indians 6, White Sox 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Jorge Orta, Joe Charboneau and Miguel Dilone drove in two runs apiece to bat the Indians to a 6-5 victory over the White Sox. Orta and Charboneau accounted for their RBIs with homers. After the White Sox went ahead, 5-4, Dilone drove in the tying and winning runs with a bases-loaded double in the eighth.

Tigers 8, Brewers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Steve Kemp hit a single, double and homer, knocking in three runs, to lead the Tigers to an 8-2 victory over the Brewers, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. Ricky Peters contributed two RBIs. Milt Wilcox, starting in place of Dan Schatzeder, who missed his turn because of a cut finger, pitched the distance and gained his first victory since July 31.

Royals 7, Rangers 3 at Kansas City (night game):
While interest centered on George Brett, who maintained his average at .404 with two hits in five trips, Hal McRae also stepped into the limelight, driving in four runs as the Royals defeated the Rangers, 7-3. Brett homered in the first inning and doubled in the fifth. McRae homered in both the first and fifth, hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and added his fourth RBI with a single in the eighth.

Yankees 5, Mariners 1 at New York (night game):
Bob Watson hit a three-run homer and Willie Randolph, playing his first game since August 18, rapped three singles and drove in two runs to account for the Yankees' scoring in a 5-1 victory over the Mariners. Randolph batted in a run in the fifth inning and then broke a 1-1 tie with another RBI single in the seventh. Bobby Murcer, who also had three hits, doubled and Watson then iced Tommy John's 18th victory with his homer.

Twins 5, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
After winning the completion of the previous day's suspended game, 7-5, in the 15th inning, the Twins also defeated the Blue Jays in the regularly scheduled contest, 5-2. Resuming play in the suspended game, which was halted after 14 innings, Butch Wynegar walked to open the 15th. Alfredo Griffin missed the throw to second on a grounder by Mike Cubbage and both runners were safe. After a sacrifice by Ken Landreaux, Dave Edwards drove in the tie-breaking tally with a single and Pete Mackanin added an insurance run with a squeeze bunt. The Twins clinched their second victory of the day with three runs in the second inning. Wynegar led off with a triple, Rick Sofield followed with a homer and one out later Ron Jackson also hit for the circuit.

Astros 6, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
The Astros' speed paid off when Rafael Landestoy scored on a two-out infield hit by Enos Cabell in the ninth inning to beat the Cubs, 6-5. Landestoy reached base with a single, stole second after one out and took third on a groundout by Joe Morgan. Cabell then bounced deep to Ivan DeJesus and beat the shortstop's throw to first as Landestoy scored.

Dodgers 5, Expos 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
After trailing, 4-0, the Dodgers rallied for two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to defeat the Expos, 5-4. A pinch-triple by Rudy Law, double by Davey Lopes and single by Bill Russell produced the Dodgers' pair in fifth. Two walks and a pinch-single by Jay Johnstone accounted for the first run in the sixth and Rick Monday then delivered a pinch-double to drive in the tying and winning tallies. The Expos outhit the Dodgers, 13-7.

Reds 8, Pirates 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
George Foster batted in six runs to lead the Reds to an 8-7 victory over the Pirates. Foster hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and three-run homer in the fifth to tie the score at 5-5. With the clubs knotted 6-6, Ken Griffey singled in the seventh, continued to third on a fielding error by Dave Parker and scored on a double by Dave Concepcion to send the Reds ahead. Foster's sixth RBI on a grounder in the ninth then accounted for the deciding run. Griffey and Concepcion rapped three hits apiece.

Phillies 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Larry Christenson and Tug McGraw combined on a five-hitter and pitched the Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Padres. McGraw relieved with one out in the seventh inning and earned his 15th save. An infield out by Manny Trillo accounted for one run and a single by Larry Bowa added another when the Phillies scored twice in the second inning. Their deciding run in the third was unearned. Bake McBride walked and would have been out on an attempted steal of second, but Tim Flannery dropped the ball for an error. Two outs later, McBride scored on a single by Keith Moreland.

Giants 1, Mets 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Vida Blue pitched a four-hitter and Terry Whitfield knocked in a run with a single to give the Giants a 1-0 victory over the Mets. Bill North drew a walk from loser Pat Zachry with two out in the eighth inning, took third on a single by Larry Herndon and scored on Whitfield's hit.

Braves 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Dale Murphy hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Braves a 3-1 lead and Gary Matthews then hit for the circuit in the ninth to beat the Cardinals, 4-3. The defeat spoiled Red Schoendienst's debut as interim manager following Whitey Herzog's appointment to serve as general manager of the Cardinals.
