Jason Thompson socked a homer in the sixth.
Tigers 5, White Sox 4 at Detroit (night game):
The winning run scored on a wild pitch as the Tigers rallied for four tallies in the ninth inning to edge the White Sox, 5-4. Trailing, 4-1, the Tigers loaded the bases on singles by John Wockenfuss and Al Cowens and a walk to Tom Brookens. Pinch-hitter Champ Summers was hit by a pitch to force in the first run, a groundout by Duffy Dyer produced the second marker and the tying tally registered on a single by Ricky Peters. White Sox reliever Ed Farmer then uncorked a wild pitch while facing Alan Trammell.
Brewers 3, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Brewers scored two runs in the 10th inning to down the Royals, 3-1. The score was 1-1 when Robin Yount opened the 10th with a walk. Cecil Cooper followed with a sacrifice bunt that Royals catcher Darrell Porter fielded near the third base line and threw into right field, allowing Yount to come home. A double by Don Money plated Cooper with an insurance tally. George Brett socked a solo homer in two official trips to the plate to raise his average to .402.
Indians 7, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
In a game called in the bottom of the seventh inning because of rain, the Indians downed the Twins, 7-1. The Tribe jumped off to a 5-0 lead in their first turn at bat with a two-run single by Dave Rosello capping the outburst. Mike Hargrove singled home tallies in the second and fourth innings.
Yankees 8, A's 3 at New York (night game):
Driving in five runs with a triple and double, Bucky Dent paced the Yankees to an 8-3 triumph over Oakland. The Yankees tallied four times in the first inning. Their first run resulted from an error by A's second sacker Jeff Cox and, after the bases were loaded, Dent drilled a three-bagger.
