A's 7, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
The A's snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 7-1 triumph over the Orioles. A homer by Dwayne Murphy gave the A's a 1-0 lead in the first inning and consecutive singles by Jeff Newman, Mike Heath, Dave McKay and Rob Picciolo made it 3-0 in the fourth. Tony Armas led off the seventh with his 29th round-tripper of the season.
Mariners 7, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
A three-run outburst in the first inning triggered the Mariners to a 7-4 victory over the Red Sox. In the Mariners' opening salvo, Julio Cruz doubled and Rodney Craig sent him home with a single. Dan Meyer followed with a two-run homer. Craig, who went 4-for-5, drove in another tally with a single in the second. Bruce Bochte stroked a two-run single in the seventh.
Brewers 9, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Exploding for eight runs in the ninth inning, the Brewers shocked the Royals, 9-5. Don Money and Dick Davis both singled twice in the big inning as the Brewers tatooed Royals' ace reliever Dan Quisenberry for seven hits and six runs. George Brett went 1-for-3 with a homer as his average dropped to .401.
Yankees 5, Angels 3 at New York (night game):
With Ron Guidry pitching one-hit ball over the final three innings in relief of Gaylord Perry, the Yankees extended their winning skein to four games by defeating the Angels, 5-3. The Yankees posted three runs in the first inning, two scoring on singles by Lou Piniella and Rick Cerone and the third crossing the plate on a passed ball. Bob Watson hit a run-scoring single in the fourth. A squeeze bunt by Bucky Dent produced a sixth-inning marker.
Blue Jays 3, White Sox 2 at Toronto (night game):
A triple by Garth Iorg in the ninth inning drove home the winning run as the Blue Jays shaded the White Sox, 3-2. Iorg's blow plated Roy Howell, who was aboard via a base on balls. The Jays had tied the game in the sixth on a solo homer by Lloyd Moseby.
Phillies 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Homers by Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski powered the Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Schmidt connected following a single by Lonnie Smith in the first inning. Luzinski's clout followed in the seventh. Dusty Baker drilled a two-run round-tripper for the Dodgers in the eighth.
Padres 3, Mets 2 at San Diego (day game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Padres edged the Mets, 3-2, for New York's sixth straight loss. Barry Evans began the Padres' ninth with a walk and raced to third on a single by Chuck Baker. Pinch-hitter Gene Tenace then ended the game by stroking a single to left.
Expos 4, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Posting his first major league shutout, Bill Gullickson permitted just three hits in hurling the Expos to a 4-0 victory over the Giants. The Expos scored in the fifth inning on a walk to Larry Parrish and double by Chris Speier. Two more runs scored in the sixth when Giants outfielders Terry Whitfield and Bill North allowed Warren Cromartie's fly ball to drop between them for a double.
