A's 5, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (day game):
A three-run outburst in the first inning triggered the A's 5-2 triumph over the Orioles. Rickey Henderson began with a walk and stole second. Dwayne Murphy followed with an RBI single, took second on the throw home and scored on a double by Dave Revering. A single by Wayne Gross then plated Revering. Steve McCatty scattered six hits in going the route, giving the A's staff the major league record of 78 complete games over a 162-game schedule. The previous record was held by the 1968 San Francisco Giants.
Mariners 12, Red Sox 6 at Boston (day game):
Exploding for eight runs in the second inning, the Mariners bested the Red Sox, 12-6. Mariners' runs in their big frame came on an RBI single by Larry Milbourne, RBI double by Leon Roberts, two-run error by Sox shortstop Rick Burleson, run-scoring single by Rodney Craig, a wild pitch, RBI single by Bruce Bochte and an infield out.
Royals 6, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Dan Quisenberry recorded his major league-leading 32nd save as the Royals outlasted the Indians, 6-4. K.C. grabbed a 2-0 lead in their first turn at bat on Willie Aikens' two-run homer. Hal McRae and Aikens stroked RBI singles in the fifth and Quisenberry came on in the seventh to strike out Joe Charboneau with the bases loaded.
Twins 3, Tigers 1 at Detroit (day game):
A two-run homer by Roy Smalley capped a three-run uprising in the eighth inning that lifted the Twins to a 3-1 victory over the Tigers. The Twins were behind, 1-0, when Hosken Powell led off the eighth with a single, was sacrificed to second by Rob Wilfong and scored on a single by Ken Landreaux. Smalley then drilled his round-tripper.
Rangers 7, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Doc Medich received credit for his 100th major league victory as the Rangers prevailed over the Brewers, 7-2. Texas took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a two-run single by Mike Richardt and make it 5-1 in the third on Richie Zisk's run-scoring double and RBI singles by John Ellis and Jim Sundberg.
Yankees 4, Angels 1 at New York (day game):
Boosting their lead over Baltimore to 4½ games, the Yankees defeated the Angels, 4-1. The Bronx Bombers scored three runs in the fourth inning when Oscar Gamble singled, Reggie Jackson walked and Jim Spencer followed with a home run. A sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer drove in a sixth-inning tally.
[DH] Blue Jays 3, White Sox 1 (day game) / Blue Jays 7, White Sox 6 at Toronto (day game):
The Blue Jays swept a twinbill from the White Sox, 3-1 and 7-6. Jays' runs in the first game came on a single by Barry Bonnell in the third inning, solo homer by John Mayberry in the fourth and single by Garth Iorg in the fifth. After the Sox went ahead, 6-5, in the seventh inning of the nightcap on a solo homer by Jim Morrison, pinch-hitter Steve Braun led off the bottom of the frame with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Joe Cannon. Cannon reached second on a sacrifice by Ernie Whitt and scored on Bob Bailor's single. After walks to Bonnell and Lloyd Moseby loaded the bases, Damaso Garcia's infield single drove in the go-ahead run.
Braves 6, Pirates 5 at Atlanta (day game):
A two-run homer by Dale Murphy in the eighth inning was the key blow as the Braves won their seventh straight game with a 6-5 verdict over the Pirates. Trailing, 5-3, going into the bottom of the eighth, the Braves scored one run when Bob Horner hit into a double play. After Chris Chambliss walked, Murphy connected for the circuit. Horner hit solo round-trippers in the fourth and sixth innings.
Cubs 6, Reds 4 at Chicago (day game):
Jerry Martin's two-out RBI double in the eighth inning keyed the Cubs' 6-4 triumph over the Reds. The game was tied when Cliff Johnson stroked a one-out single in the eighth and was replaced by pinch-runner Carlos Lezcano, who came home one out later on Martin's two-bagger. After an intentional walk to Tim Blackwell, a single by Steve Dillard plated Martin with an insurance tally.
Cardinals 2, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Spacing eight hits, Pete Vuckovich pitched the Cardinals to a 2-0 blanking of the Astros. A two-out single by Ted Simmons gave the Redbirds a 1-0 lead in the first inning and Vuckovich singled home a second-inning marker.
Dodgers 6, Phillies 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Relieving starter Dave Goltz, who was forced to leave in the fourth inning because of a twisted ankle, Bobby Castillo hurled the Dodgers to a 6-0 blanking of the Phillies. L.A. scored twice in the first inning on a single by Dusty Baker, double by Steve Garvey, a balk and Ron Cey's RBI single. Garvey stroked a run-scoring single in the third frame and the Dodgers tallied three times in the fourth on an RBI single by Derrel Thomas and two-run single by Davey Lopes.
Padres 5, Mets 2 at San Diego (day game):
The Padres defeated the Mets, 5-2, dealing the New Yorkers their ninth consecutive loss. San Diego scored three runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Broderick Perkins and Gene Tenace's two-run double. Both hits came after two were out. A run-scoring single by Luis Salazar and RBI double by Tim Flannery accounted for the Padres' final two tallies in the eighth chukker.
Giants 6, Expos 3 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants ended their six-game losing streak by taking a 6-3 decision over the Expos. Frisco broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth on a throwing error by Montreal third baseman Larry Parrish and a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Max Venable. Larry Herndon singled home the Giants' final run in the eighth.
