Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 8, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Bob Watson knocked in five runs with a grand slam and a tie-breaking 10th-inning double to lead the Yankees to an 8-5 triumph over the Red Sox. The bases-loaded blast came in the sixth, following a walk to Bobby Murcer, double by Oscar Gamble and intentional pass to Reggie Jackson. The score was 5-5 when Gamble began the Yankees' 10th with a single and was forced at second on an attempted sacrifice by Joe Lefebvre. Watson then lined an RBI double to right-center. Successive singles by Rick Cerone, Fred Stanley and Aurelio Rodriguez produced two more runs. Jackson drilled a solo homer in the second.

Royals 7, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The Royals reduced their magic number to five for clinching the A.L. West title by defeating the Angels, 7-2, behind the four-hit hurling of Dennis Leonard. A two-run homer by Willie Aikens climaxed a three-run third inning and K.C. put the game away in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jose Cardenal and Jamie Quirk's RBI single.

Orioles 6, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (night game):
Registering his 23rd victory -- tops in the majors -- Steve Stone hurled the Orioles to a 6-1 decision over the Blue Jays. The Birds grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Doug DeCinces singled and raced to third on a single by Mark Belanger. The pair then worked a double steal. Al Bumbry stroked an RBI single, stole second and scored when third baseman Roy Howell made an errant throw to first on a grounder by Rich Dauer. After Ken Singleton walked, Eddie Murray delivered a run-scoring single.

Expos 6, Cubs 5 at Montreal (night game):
Blasting off with a four-run first inning, the Expos edged the Cubs, 6-5. Montreal's runs in the opening frame came on an error by Cubs third baseman Lenny Randle following a triple by Rowland Office and consecutive RBI doubles by Gary Carter, Warren Cromartie and Larry Parrish.

Phillies 5, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
The Phillies handed the Mets their 12th straight loss, 5-1, behind the steady pitching of Dick Ruthven, who went the first eight innings. The Phillies broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth on a one-out double by Ruthven, single by Pete Rose and sacrifice fly by Bake McBride.

Pirates 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Permitting five hits, Bert Blyleven hurled the Pirates to a 2-1 triumph over the Cardinals. The Bucs scored both their runs in the third inning on a single by Steve Nicosia, RBI triple by Omar Moreno and Bill Madlock's sacrifice fly. The Cards' tally came in the fourth on a wild pitch.
