Yankees 4, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
The Yankees scored all their runs in the fourth inning, including two on a single by Bucky Dent, to defeat the Red Sox, 4-3. To start the Yankees' big inning, Lou Piniella singled and stopped at third on a double by Rick Cerone before both scored on Dent's single. After a sacrifice, Dent crossed the plate on a single by Willie Randolph. Bobby Brown forced Randolph, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk and counted the deciding run on a double by Oscar Gamble.
Angels 10, Rangers 1 at California (night game):
Jason Thompson and John Harris hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning and followed with consecutive sacrifice flies in the sixth to feature the Angels' attack in a 10-1 trouncing of the Rangers. Harris was celebrating his 26th brithday.
Twins 6, White Sox 5 at Chicago (night game):
After scoring three unearned runs on as many errors in the first two innings, the Twins went on to edge the White Sox, 6-5. Pete Mackanin batted in two runs with a single in the third to make it 5-0. After the White Sox came back with three on a homer and double by Chet Lemon, John Castino hit for the circuit in the sixth to provide the Twins with their deciding run.
Tigers 7, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Taking advantage of an error, the Tigers scored three unearned runs in the 13th inning and defeated the Indians, 7-4. Champ Summers, who had homered earlier in the game, led off the 13th with a single and scored the tie-breaking run on a single by Lance Parrish and two-out throwing error by Indians second baseman Dave Rosello. Before the frame ended, Lou Whitaker knocked in a pair of insurance runs with a single.
A's 6, Royals 2 at Oakland (day game):
Dwayne Murphy and Rob Picciolo each hit a two-run homer in pacing the A's to a 6-2 victory over the Royals. Murphy connected for the circuit in the first inning and Picciolo in the second.
Brewers 8, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
Mike Caldwell pitched a three-hitter and Ben Oglivie drove in three runs with a homer and double as the Brewers defeated the Mariners, 8-0. Loser Mike Parrott suffered his 14th consecutive setback since winning on opening day. Last season Parrott was the Mariners' leading pitcher with a 14-12 record.
Orioles 6, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
Dan Graham batted in two runs with a bases-loaded single and Eddie Murray added two runs with a homer to lead the Orioles to a 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays. Ken Singleton and Terry Crowley both walked around a double by Murray to set the stage for Graham's single.
Braves 5, Padres 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Belting a homer, double and single, Bob Horner knocked in three of the Braves' runs in a 5-3 victory over the Giants. Horner had to leave the game in the seventh inning when he slid into second and was spiked trying to stretch his single into a double.
Dodgers 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Derrel Thomas, subbing for injured Bill Russell at shortstop, tripled to drive in the tying run with two out in the ninth inning and then scored on a balk by Mario Soto to bring the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Reds. Rick Monday walked with one away and after Mike Scioscia flied out, Gary Weiss ran for Monday and came home on Thomas' three-bagger.
Astros 3, Giants 2 at Houston (night game):
Ground-rule doubles by Joe Morgan and Gary Woods, plus a single by Luis Pujols, accounted for the Astros' scoring in a 3-2 victory over the Giants. Rafael Landestoy singled in the third inning, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on Morgan's two-bagger. Then in the fourth, Cesar Cedeno and Art Howe both singled. Cedeno scored on Woods' ground-rule double and Howe came home on Pujols' single.
Pirates 4, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Don Robinson pitched a four-hitter and Mike Easler and John Milner provided batting support as the Pirates defeated the Expos, 4-0. Easler started the scoring with a homer in the second off Steve Rogers, who was stopped on his string of 21 consecutive shutout innings. Easler also singled in the seventh, stole second and scored on a single by Milner. Another single by Milner produced one of the Pirates' final two runs in the ninth. The fefeat left the Expos with a lead of one game over the Phillies and 3½ over the Pirates in the East Division.
Mets 4, Cubs 2 at New York (day game):
Ed Lynch gained his first major league victory and Roy Lee Jackson picked up his first save of the season when the Mets ended a 13-game losing streak by defeating the Cubs, 4-2. The Mets decided the outcome with three runs in the fourth inning. Joel Youngblood led off with a double and scored on a single by Mike Jorgensen, who continued to second on a wild throw by Cubs center fielder Jesus Figueroa. After two out, a pass to Bill Almon and single by Lynch loaded the bases. Mookie Wilson then walked to force in a run and Wally Backman followed with a single to drive in another tally.
Phillies 2, Cardinals 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton posted his 22nd victory, pitching the Phillies to a 2-1 decision, marking the ace lefthander's fifth triumph over the Cardinals this season. The Cards counted their run in the second inning on singles by George Hendrick and Tito Landrum around a wild pitch. The Phillies came back with their pair against Bob Forsch in the sixth. Bob Boone led off with a double and stopped at third on a single by Carlton. Forsch then hit both Pete Rose and Bake McBride with pitches to force in the tying run. Mike Schmidt followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center field and Carlton scored his own winning run after the catch.
