The victory moved the Yankees five games ahead of the Orioles in the East Division race.
Angels 3, Rangers 1 at California (day game):
The Angels defeated the Rangers, 3-1, extending Texas' losing streak to five games as three California pitchers combined on a four-hitter. The Angels scored a first-inning run on singles by Dickie Thon and Jason Thompson around a wild pitch. Another marker in the fourth scored on a single by Rick Miller. Bobby Clark delivered a solo homer in the sixth. Dave Roberts homered for the Rangers' run.
Twins 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
A pinch-hit single by Mike Cubbage drove home two runs in the eighth inning to key the Twins to a 3-2 victory over the White Sox. The Twins trailed, 2-1, when Gary Ward opened the eighth with a double. After John Castino walked, Ed Farmer replaced Ross Baumgarten on the hill for the White Sox and uncorked a wild pitch, sending the runners to second and third. Roy Smalley and Glenn Adams struck out, but Cubbage laced a single to put the Twins ahead.
[DH] Indians 5, Tigers 4 (day game) / Indians 3, Tigers 0 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians swept a doubleheader from the Tigers, winning the lidlifter, 5-4, in 13 innings through the hitting heroics of Gary Gray, and capturing the nightcap, 3-0, behind the four-hit hurling of Bob Owchinko. In the opener, Gray blasted a two-run pinch-homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and then singled home the winning run in the 13th. Owchinko's shutout was his first in the A.L. The Indians scored all their runs in the first inning of the second game on a pass to Miguel Dilone, a stolen base, single by Alan Bannister and doubles by Mike Hargrove and Rick Manning.
Royals 4, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
The Royals reduced their magic number for clinching the West Division title to two by edging the A's, 4-3. A bases-loaded single by Willie Aikens produced two runs in the third inning. The Royals added an unearned run in the fourth and then got their deciding tally when Pete LaCock hit his first homer of the season in the sixth. Dan Quisenberry notched his major league-leading 33rd save.
Brewers 3, Mariners 2 at Seattle (day game):
A two-run double by Cecil Cooper in the seventh inning was the key blow as the Brewers won, 3-2, to complete the three-game series sweep over the Mariners. Cooper's two-bagger came with two outs and the Mariners leading, 2-1. Reggie Cleveland earned the save by pitching three innings of two-hit relief. Dave Edler accounted for both Mariners runs with his first major league homer in the second inning.
Blue Jays 4, Orioles 3 at Toronto (day game):
The Blue Jays shaded the Orioles, 4-3, in 13 innings despite three homers by Eddie Murray, who belted a leadoff round-tripper in the fourth, tied the game with a bases-empty clout in the ninth and put the Orioles ahead, 3-2, with another solo shot in the top of the 11th. The Jays tied the score in the bottom of the frame on an error by rookie shortstop Bob Bonner and won the game in the 13th on a single by Lloyd Moseby, a sacrifice, intentional walk and single by Bob Bailor.
Braves 4, Padres 3 at Atlanta (day game):
A single by Jerry Royster in the ninth inning for his fourth hit of the game drove in the winning run as the Braves edged the Padres, 4-3. With the game tied, pinch-hitter Bob Horner began the ninth with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Gary Cooper, who reached second on a sacrifice by Luis Gomez. After an intentional pass to pinch-hitter Jeff Burroughs, Royster delivered his run-scoring single to end the game.
Dodgers 3, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
Ron Cey and Rick Monday figured in all of the Dodgers' runs in a 3-1 victory over the Reds behind the five-hit pitching of Jerry Reuss. After Cey walked in the second inning, Monday slammed a homer. In the fourth, Cey doubled and scored on a single by Monday.
Astros 6, Giants 4 at Houston (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Astros defeated the Giants, 6-4. A four-run second inning was the key to victory. A single by Jose Cruz, walk to Cesar Cedeno and single by Denny Walling produced the first run. A single by Alan Ashby plated two more. Joe Morgan then capped the outburst with a run-scoring single.
Expos 4, Pirates 0 at Montreal (day game):
Bill Gullickson tossed a three-hitter as the Expos blanked the Pirates, 4-0. A bases-loaded walk gave the Expos their final run in the seventh.
Mets 10, Cubs 7 at New York (day game):
A three-run homer by Ken Henderson climaxed a four-run rally in the ninth inning that gave the Mets a 10-7 triumph over the Cubs. After Lee Mazzilli stroked a single for his fifth RBI of the game to tie the score in the ninth, he stole second. Joel Youngblood then was intentionally walked to set up a possible inning-ending double play, but Henderson cracked an 0-1 pitch by Bruce Sutter over the left field fence. Dave Kingman belted two homers for the Cubs, while Mazzilli had a two-run round-tripper for the Mets.
Phillies 8, Cardinals 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
