Mariners 12, White Sox 1 at Seattle (night game):
Exploding for nine runs in the third inning, the Mariners routed the White Sox, 12-1. The big inning was keyed by a two-run homer by Rodney Craig and two-run doubles by Dan Meyer and Mario Mendoza. Seattle scored twice in the fifth on a two-run triple by Mendoza and added their final marker in the eighth on a pinch-homer by Jim Anderson.

Rangers 2, A's 0 at Texas (night game):
Al Oliver's 2,000th career hit snapped a 0-0 tie in the sixth inning and sparked the Rangers to a 2-0 victory over the A's. Mickey Rivers singled with one out in the sixth inning and, after Johnny Grubb walked, Oliver lined a single to right, driving in Rivers. Grubb singled home Bud Harrelson with the other Texas run in the seventh. Jon Matlack and John Henry Johnson combined for the 11-hit shutout.

Braves 9, Dodgers 0 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves blanked the Dodgers, 9-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Tommy Boggs. Atlanta scored three runs in the first inning on singles by Jerry Royster and Glenn Hubbard, an RBI groundout by Gary Matthews and two-run homer by Bob Horner. Matthews later singled home two runs in the eighth.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Andy Rincon made a successful major league debut by pitching a five-hitter in the Cardinals' 5-1 victory over the Cubs. The Redbirds broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning on an RBI double by George Hendrick, a balk and run-scoring singles by Rincon and Ken Oberkfell. Rincon pitched hitless ball over the final 5 2/3 innings.

Reds 6, Giants 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Unfurling a three-hitter, Tom Seaver recorded his fifth straight victory as the Reds defeated the Giants, 6-2. The Reds scored four runs in the first inning. Ken Griffey and Dave Concepcion walked and Dan Driessen doubled them home. Roy Knight then followed with a homer.

Padres 6, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
The Padres snapped the Astros' five-game winning streak, 6-3. The Padres trailed, 2-1, going into the fourth inning, but scored three runs on consecutive singles by Bill Fahey, Luis Salazar and Tim Flannery, a fielder's choice and two-run single by Gene Richards. Randy Blass and Jerry Mumphrey delivered RBI singles in the seventh and ninth frames, respectively. Gary Woods hit his first big league homer for the Astros.
