Tigers 8, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
A four-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Tigers to an 8-3 victory over the Orioles. With the game tied, 2-2, the Tigers' winning surge began with one-out singles by Al Cowens and Tom Brookens. A double by Lou Whitaker scored Cowens and after Ricky Peters was intentionally walked, Alan Trammell drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Brookens. Tippy Martinez then replaced starter Steve Stone on the hill for the Orioles and was greeted by a two-run single by Steve Kemp. Kemp had hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Red Sox 9, Indians 5 at Boston (night game):
Paced by Dave Stapleton's five hits, the Red Sox ended their five-game losing skein with a 9-5 victory over the Indians. The Red Sox snapped a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Stapleton and Jim Rice and added another run in the fifth on a scoring single by Julio Valdez. Tony Perez drilled a two-run double in the eighth.
Yankees 5, Blue Jays 4 at New York (night game):
Stout relief pitching by Rich Gossage enabled the Yankees to shade the Blue Jays, 5-4, and increase their lead in the East Division to six games over the Orioles. The big righthander came on in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out and retired Alfredo Griffin on a popup and struck out pinch-hitter Al Woods. The Yanks scored three runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Oscar Gamble, Jim Spencer and Rick Cerone and registered a pair of markers in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer and run-scoring single by Gamble.
White Sox 2, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
A homer and triple by Chet Lemon keyed the White Sox to a 2-1 decision over the Mariners. The round-tripper came with the bases empty in the third inning and the triple led off the ninth frame. Lemon then scored the winning run on a one-out double by Harold Baines.
A's 4, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Mike Norris became a 20-game winner by going the route as the A's defeated the Rangers, 4-2, in 11 innings. The A's were behind, 2-0, but tied the game in the ninth on a two-run homer by Mickey Klutts, pinch-hitting for Wayne Gross. Klutts led off the 11th with a single and, with one out, moved to second on a single by Orlando Gonzalez and scored on a single by Dave McKay. A sacrifice fly by Mario Guerrero accounted for the final run.
Braves 2, Dodgers 1 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves recorded their fifth straight victory, beating the Dodgers, 2-1. The Braves broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning when Bruce Benedict walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Gary Cooper, who reached second on a throwing error by catcher Steve Yeager after a bunt by Luis Gomez. Jerry Royster then drove in the winning run with a single for his fourth hit of the game.
Cubs 6, Cardinals 5 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run homer by Cliff Johnson in the eighth inning lifted the Cubs to a 6-5 victory over the Cardinals. With the Cubs trailing, 4-3, Jim Tracy began the stanza with a pinch-single and went to second on a single by Bill Buckner. After Dave Kingman flied out, Johnson laced a pitch over the left field wall.
Giants 8, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
A four-run uprising in the third inning started the Giants off to an 8-1 victory over the Reds behind the six-hit pitching of Ed Whitson. Bill North opened the third with a double and scored on a two-bagger by Darrell Evans. A single by Larry Herndon plated Evans and Jim Wohlford followed with a double, driving in Herndon. Rennie Stennett capped the rally with a single, scoring Wohlford.
Padres 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Pushing across a run in the seventh inning, the Padres edged the Astros, 4-3. The game was tied, 3-3, when Gene Richards singled to open the seventh, went to second on a sacrifice by Ozzie Smith and scored on a double by Jerry Mumphrey.
[DH] Expos 5, Mets 3 (night game) / Expos 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
The Expos swept a doubleheader from the Mets, winning, 5-3, in 11 innings and 4-2. The first game was decided when Warren Cromartie drew a walk and Larry Parrish followed with a homer. The Expos had deadlocked the contest in the seventh on a homer by Gary Carter, singles by Cromartie and Chris Speier and an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Willie Montanez. The second game was knotted, 2-2, when Cromartie began the ninth inning by reaching first base on an error by Mets shortstop Frank Taveras. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by Parrish and took third on an infield hit by Speier. Ron LeFlore ran for Speier and stole second. After pinch-hitter Montanez was walked to load the bases, Jerry White hit a chopper to third baseman Elliott Maddox, whose throw to the plate was dropped by catcher Butch Benton. Rodney Scott then followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home an insurance run.
Pirates 3, Phillies 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Jim Bibby and Kent Tekulve combined on a three-hitter to lead the Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the Phillies. Tekulve came on in the ninth inning with two runners aboard and none out and protected the lead. The Pirates scored a run in the second on doubles by Mike Easler and Bill Madlock and added two in the third on singles by Tim Foli, Dave Parker, Easler and John Milner.
