Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 9, Tigers 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Rallying for three runs in the fifth inning, the Orioles downed the Tigers, 9-3, as Sammy Stewart pitched 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The score was 3-3 in the fifth when Rich Dauer walked and went to third on a single by Ken Singleton, who reached second on the throw to third. After an intentional walk to Eddie Murray, Terry Crowley drilled a two-run single. Dan Graham, who had clouted a two-run homer in the second stanza, then capped the outburst with an RBI single.
Indians 6, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
A pinch-single by Gary Alexander in the 11th inning drove home the winning run as the Indians edged the Red Sox, 6-5. The game was tied, 5-5, when Jack Brohamer stroked a one-out single and was replaced by pinch-runner Jerry Dybzinski, who moved to second on an infield hit by Tom Veryzer. One out later, Alexander delivered the decisive blow. The Red Sox had tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer by Dwight Evans.
[DH] Royals 5, Angels 0 (night game) / Angels 7, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals clinched the West Division title by winning the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Dennis Leonard. The Angels rebounded to take the nightcap, 7-4, despite the return of George Brett to the Royals' lineup. Brett went 2-for-5 to maintain his average at .396. The Royals scored in the first inning of the lidlifter when Willie Wilson singled, took second on a walk, stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae. Wilson singled in two more runs in the second inning. The Angels won the second game when a three-run double by Brian Downing in the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie.
[DH] Twins 3, Brewers 2 (night game) / Twins 6, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Twins swept a twinbill from the Brewers, 3-2 and 6-1. A three-run rally in the fifth inning carried Minnesota to victory in the first game. A double by Greg Johnston began the outburst. Hosken Powell followed with an RBI single and scored on a triple by Rob Wilfong. Roy Smalley then delivered a sacrifice fly. The first career grand slam by Wilfong snapped a scoreless tie in the seventh inning of the second game. The big blast was preceded by a double by Johnston, pinch-single by Butch Wynegar and intentional walk to Powell. Later in that same stanza, Glenn Adams and Ron Jackson crashed solo round-trippers.
Yankees 8, Blue Jays 7 at New York (night game):
The Blue Jays were leading the Yankees, 5-3, when rain forced the suspension of play with two out in the top half of the 10th inning. The contest was completed prior to the next night's regularly scheduled game. The Blue Jays broke a 3-3 tie in the 10th with the aid of some shoddy defensive work by the Yankees. Ron Davis struck out Bob Bailor and Joe Cannon and then fanned pinch-hitter Al Woods, but catcher Rick Cerone let the third strike get by him for a passed ball, allowing Woods to reach first. Ernie Whitt then singled to right field, where the ball went through the legs of Reggie Jackson as both Woods and Whitt scored on the three-base error.
Mariners 4, White Sox 0 at Seattle (night game):
Floyd Bannister pitched a six-hitter over 8 2/3 innings and Mike Parrott came on to record the final out of the game as the Mariners blanked the White Sox, 4-0. Reggie Walton drove in Seattle's first run in the fourth inning and doubled home another tally in the eighth. Dave Edler blasted a solo homer in the seventh.
A's 6, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Jumping off to an early lead, the A's held on to down the Rangers, 6-4, but Rick Langford was stopped on his string of 22 consecutive complete games. The A's starter was removed with two out in the ninth inning after Rusty Staub hit a two-run homer. Bob Lacey got the final out.
Cardinals 8, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
Returning to the lineup after missing 25 games, Garry Templeton went 2-for-4 to boost his batting average to a league-leading .325 as the Cardinals subdued the Cubs, 8-5. The Redbirds loaded the bases in the first inning on singles by Ken Oberkfell and Templeton and a walk to Keith Hernandez, and then scored three runs as Cubs shortstop Ivan DeJesus erred on two successive plays. The lead was boosted to 5-0 in the fourth on singles by Tony Scott and Terry Kennedy, a sacrifice fly by Tommy Herr and double by Ken Oberkfell.
Reds 7, Astros 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
A grand slam by Ray Knight, who also drove in a fifth run with a single, highlighted the Reds' 7-0 victory over the Astros as Mario Soto pitched a five-hitter. George Foster drilled a solo homer in the second inning and Knight connected in the fourth following a single by Dave Concepcion, a stolen base, walk to Foster, a fielder's choice and walk to Johnny Bench.
Dodgers 2, Padres 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers took over first place in the N.L. West, one game ahead of the Astros, by edging the Padres, 2-1. The Dodgers scored in the first inning when Jack Perconte walked, stole second and tallied on a single by Dusty Baker. Their second run came in the sixth stanza when Rudy Law singled, reached third on a throwing error by Padres pitcher Juan Eichelberger and raced home on Perconte's safe hit on a squeeze bunt.
Mets 5, Expos 2 at New York (night game):
A four-run uprising in the fifth inning lifted the Mets to a 5-2 decision over the Expos. The Mets trailed, 2-0, when pinch-hitter Jose Moreno stroked a leadoff single, moved to third on a double by Mookie Wilson and scored on a single by Wally Backman. Lee Mazzilli then cracked a three-run homer. Pete Falcone picked up his first save of the season by allowing just two hits over the final four innings.
Phillies 5, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Pushing across a run in the 11th inning, the Phillies posted a 5-4 triumph over the Pirates. With the game tied, 4-4, Garry Maddox stroked a leadoff single and then stole second and third. After two out, Del Unser delivered a pinch-single. Sparky Lyle pitched the bottom of the frame to record his first save since joining the Phillies.
Giants 2, Braves 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Vida Blue recorded his third shutout of the season, pitching the Giants to a 2-0 victory over the Braves. The Giants scored their runs in the sixth inning on a double by Larry Herndon, triple by Jim Wohlford and single by Rennie Stennett.
