Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 8, Blue Jays 6 at Baltimore (night game):
Doug DeCinces smashed a homer after a single by Rick Dempsey in the 12th inning to lift the Orioles to an 8-6 victory over the Blue Jays. In a game of ups and downs, Al Bumbry hit a two-run homer for the Orioles to tie the score at 3-3 in the third and Blue Jays rookie outfielder Paul Hodgson knotted the count at 5-5 with his first major league homer in the sixth. The Blue Jays went ahead when Steve Braun belted his first homer of the season in the 10th, but the Orioles rallied to keep the game going when Lee May drove in the tying tally with a pinch-double in the home half.
Tigers 4, Indians 3 at Detroit (night game):
Held scoreless for a stretch of 17 innings, the Tigers broke their drought long enough to defeat the Indians, 4-3. Gary Alexander drove in two runs with a triple and counted himself on a sacrifice fly by Toby Harrah as the Indians took a 3-0 lead in the fourth. The Tigers came back with a matching three runs in their half on a double by Lance Parrish, homer by Tom Brookens, double by Lou Whitaker and a throwing error by shortstop Jerry Dybzinski on a grounder by Ricky Peters. The Tigers then posted the game-winning tally in the fifth when Al Cowens doubled to drive in John Wockenfuss.
Royals 13, A's 3 at Kansas City (night game):
George Brett rapped two singles in four trips and brought his average back to .400 for the first time since September 4 as the Royals piled up 16 hits in a 13-3 thrashing of the A's. Brett drove in the Royals' first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and was credited with his 13th game-winning RBI of the season. Brett also knocked in another run during the course of the game and scored twice. John Wathan and Clint Hurdle had three RBIs each.
Brewers 4, Mariners 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bob McClure made his fourth start since coming out of the Brewers' bullpen, pitched a five-hitter and shut out the Mariners, 4-0. Paul Molitor hit a single, double and triple for the Brewers, scoring twice, while Ben Oglivie batted in two runs with a double and single.
Twins 6, White Sox 3 at Minnesota (night game):
A four-run rally in the eighth inning, helped by three walks, lifted the Twins to a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. Butch Wynegar and John Castino each hit a run-scoring single, Greg Johnston lofted a sacrifice fly and pinch-hitter Jesus Vega accounted for an RBI with a grounder in the Twins' scoring. Harold Baines had a homer for the White Sox.
Yankees 2, Red Sox 1 at New York (night game):
Hitless in 14 times at bat, Bobby Brown snapped his slump with a tie-breaking homer in the seventh inning, giving the Yankees a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. Brown's blow enabled Luis Tiant to win for the first time since June 20. The veteran righthander yielded five hits in seven innings before Rich Gossage came in to finish the game for his 29th save of the season.
Angels 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Brian Downing and Dan Ford batted in two runs apiece in support of Frank Tanana, who pitched the Angels to a 6-2 victory over the Rangers. The triumph was the seventh in the last eight decisions for Tanana, bringing his record to 10-10. Dave Skaggs hit a sacrifice fly to produce the Angels' initial run in the second inning, Downing rapped a two-run single in the third and Ford delivered a two-run single in the seventh.
Cubs 4, Phillies 3 at Chicago (day game):
A single by pinch-hitter Jerry Martin in the ninth inning capped a two-run rally and brought the Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. Larry Biittner, pinch-hitting for Mike Tyson, led off with a double and was replaced on the paths by Mick Kelleher, who was tagged out at third base on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Steve Dillard. Cliff Johnson then walked and Ivan DeJesus singled, driving in Dillard to tie the score at 3-3. After Tug McGraw relieved Warren Brusstar on the mound for the Phillies, Martin batted for Scot Thompson and lined his game-winning single.
Reds 10, Dodgers 7 at Los Angeles (night game):
Johnny Bench hit the 11th grand-slam homer of his career in the second inning during a seven-run outburst that propelled the Reds to a 10-7 victory over the Dodgers. After George Foster drove in the Reds' initial run with a single in the first inning, Ray Knight opened the second with a single and Ron Oester was safe on an error by Jerry Reuss. Paul Moskau singled to score Knight. Dave Collins forced Moskau and stole second. After a pass to Ken Griffey, Dave Concepcion drove in two runs with a double. The Dodgers then passed Foster intentionally to load the bases in a bit of strategy that went sour when Bench followed with his grand slam.
Pirates 4, Mets 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-run double by John Milner in the fifth inning enabled the Pirates to edge the Mets, 4-3. The Pirates counted twice in the first on a single by Tim Foli, double by Dave Parker, sacrifice fly by Mike Easler and triple by Bill Madlock. The Mets bunched five of their 10 hits off Rick Rhoden for three runs in the third, but the Pirates came back in the fifth when Easler doubled, Madlock walked and both scored on Milner's two-bagger.
Padres 7, Braves 4 at San Diego (night game):
Hitting a pair of doubles, Luis Salazar drove in two runs and scored two as the Padres defeated the Braves, 7-4. Doubles by Bill Fahey and Salazar and a single by Tim Flannery made it 4-1 for the Padres in the fourth inning and they raised the score to 6-2 in the sixth when Salazar doubled for his second RBI and counted himself on a single by Steve Mura, the Padres' win-ning pitcher. Rollie Fingers picked up credit for his 22nd save.
Giants 4, Astros 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Taking advantage of two errors, the Giants scored four runs, three of them unearned, in the first inning and defeated the Astros, 4-3. Denny Walling and Craig Reynolds committed the Astros' costly errors. The Giants had singles by Max Venable, Larry Herndon and Terry Whitfield, a sacrifice fly by Milt May and run-scoring grounder by Rennie Stennett. Two walks, a single by Terry Puhl and triple by Jose Cruz accounted for the Astros' runs in the third.
Cardinals 9, Expos 8 at St. Louis (night game):
Despite having a grand slam by Gary Carter, the Expos lost to the Cardinals, who gained a 9-8 victory when George Hendrick batted in two runs with a double in the ninth inning. Carter's clout in the seventh inning sent the Expos ahead, 7-2, but the Cards rallied for five runs to tie the score in their half. After the Expos regained the lead with a sacrifice fly by Ellis Valentine in the ninth, Keith Hernandez and Ted Simmons singled in the Cards' half and Hernandez and pinch-runner Bobby Bonds raced home on Hendrick's game-winning double.
