Orioles 2, Blue Jays 1 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles won their fifth straight game, beating the Blue Jays, 2-1. The Birds scored both their runs in the third inning. Al Bumbry drew a leadoff walk but was forced by Rich Dauer, who reached third on a single by Ken Singleton and scored on a single by Eddie Murray. A single by John Lowenstein then delivered Singleton. Tim Stoddard relieved in the ninth with pinch-runner Lloyd Moseby on second and two out and was credited with a save when catcher Rick Dempsey picked Moseby off.
Tigers 13, Indians 1 at Detroit (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Tigers routed the Indians, 13-1. The Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning with a two-run double by Steve Kemp and three-run homer by Tom Brookens highlighting the uprising. Kemp, who had four RBIs for the game, raised his total to 15 for the week, during which he batted .434.
A's 9, Royals 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Wayne Gross knocked in five runs with a pair of homers to pace the A's to a 9-3 victory over the Royals. Gross belted a three-run round-tripper in the fifth inning and two-run blast in the seventh. George Brett, going 1-for-4, saw his average drop to .394. Brett's hit was a two-run homer in the first.
Mariners 7, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (day game):
Homers by Bruce Bochte and Willie Horton powered the Mariners to a 7-5 triumph over the Brewers. Horton drilled a two-run blast to highlight a three-run fourth inning and Bochte put the game on ice with a two-run swat in the seventh stanza.
[DH] Twins 5, White Sox 4 (day game) / Twins 6, White Sox 4 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins swept a doubleheader from the White Sox, 5-4 and 6-4, as Ken Landreaux played a key role in both games. The Twins trailed, 4-3, when John Castino opened the eighth inning of the first game with a double and reached third on a single by Hosken Powell, who moved to second on the throw. Castino scored on a groundout by Pete Mackanin and Landreaux stroked a sacrifice fly to plate the go-ahead run. In the nightcap, Rob Wilfong homered with one out in the third inning. Landreaux followed with a triple and scored on a groundout by Roy Smalley. Landreaux then drilled a two-run homer in the fifth to snap a 4-4 tie.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 0 at New York (day game):
Ron Guidry and Rich Gossage combined on a four-hitter as the Yankees whitewashed the Red Sox, 3-0. The Yankees scored all their runs in their first turn at bat. Willie Randolph and Bucky Dent led off with walks and Bob Watson followed with an RBI double. A sacrifice fly by Reggie Jackson accounted for the second marker and a single by Rick Cerone plated the third tally.
Angels 9, Rangers 2 at Texas (day game):
The Angels downed the Rangers, 9-2, as Jason Thompson led the attack with two hits and three RBIs. Thompson singled for one of the Angels' three runs in the fourth. The Angels tallied five times in the sixth, two scoring on a single by Thompson.
Phillies 7, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Phillies pulled to within one-half game of the first-place Expos in the East Division with a 7-3 decision over the Cubs. Greg Luzinski broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a homer and the Phillies added three runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Manny Trillo, run-scoring single by Pete Rose and sacrifice fly by Bake McBride. Mike Schmidt drilled a round-tripper in the ninth.
Reds 7, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
A five-run rally in the top of the 11th inning carried the Reds to a 7-2 triumph and knocked the Dodgers out of first place in the West Division. Joe Nolan opened the Reds' 11th with a single and Ron Oester followed with a bunt single. Tom Hume bunted and forced the runner at third, but the relay to first went wide for an error, putting runners on first and third. Pinch-hitter Johnny Bench was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ken Griffey followed with a two-run single. A single by Dave Concepcion plated Bench. An RBI groundout by George Foster scored Griffey and a single by Dan Driessen drove home Concepcion.
Pirates 9, Mets 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Homers by Ed Ott and Bill Madlock highlighted a four-run fifth inning that helped the Pirates post a 9-4 victory over the Mets. Ott began the inning with a round-tripper and the second marker of the frame came on a double by John Candelaria and single by Omar Moreno. After Moreno was caught stealing, Phil Garner singled and Madlock climaxed the outburst with a two-run homer.
Padres 3, Braves 1 at San Diego (day game):
Tom Tellmann, making his first major league start, scattered seven hits and hurled the Padres to a 3-1 triumph over the Braves. The Padres went ahead in the second inning on a homer by Randy Bass and added two more tallies in the fifth, one coming in on single by Tellmann. The Braves run in the seventh was unearned.
Astros 5, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Yielding only three hits -- none until two out in the eighth inning -- Vern Ruhle pitched the Astros to a 5-1 verdict over the Giants. Gary Woods drove in two of the Astros' runs with a single and double. Art Howe crashed a homer.
Cardinals 4, Expos 1 at St. Louis (day game):
Yielding only three hits over eight innings, Andy Rincon pitched the Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over the Expos. The rookie righthander was forced to leave the game in the ninth with leg cramps and Kim Seaman finished to earn the save. The Cardinals scored three runs in the second inning on doubles by Leon Durham and Tony Scott, a single by Tommy Herr, sacrifice by Rincon and single by Ken Oberkfell.
