Red Sox 5, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Tony Perez and Dwight Evans in the seventh inning rallied the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Orioles. Evans snapped a 3-3 tie with his circuit clout after Perez led off the inning with his 22nd round-tripper of the season. The Sox then strung together three consecutive two-out singles by Reid Nichols, Rick Burleson and Dave Stapleton to register the final run of the inning.
Blue Jays 6, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
A run-scoring single by Al Woods broke a seventh-inning tie and Lloyd Moseby collected four hits, including two doubles, to pace the Blue Jays to a 6-5 triumph over the Tigers. The Jays trailed, 5-4, going into the seventh, but tied the game on Moseby's RBI double and went ahead when Woods singled home Moseby.
Angels 7, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Scoring late in the game, the Angels downed the Brewers, 7-3. The game was tied, 3-3, in the eighth inning, when Bobby Grich hit a one-out single and Larry Harlow drew a base on balls. Bobby Clark then delivered a single to tally Grich. The Angels iced the game with three runs in the ninth, two of them unearned.
Twins 1, Rangers 0 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins' Jerry Koosman and Doug Corbett combined to whitewash the Rangers, 1-0. The lone run of the game came off John Butcher in the first inning when Hosken Powell singled, moved to second on a groundout and came home on a single by Roy Smalley.
Yankees 4, Indians 3 at New York (night game):
Rallying for three runs in the eighth inning, the Yankees swept past the Indians, 4-3. The Yanks trailed, 2-1, going into the bottom of the eighth but went ahead on walks to Bucky Dent and Willie Randolph, an RBI double by Bobby Brown and two-run single by Bob Watson. Tommy John, getting relief help from Rich Gossage, received credit for his 22nd victory of the season.
Mariners 5, Royals 4 at Seattle (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Mariners shaded the Royals, 5-4. The game was tied, 4-4, when Bruce Bochte lashed a two-out double and scored as Willie Horton hit a hot smash off the glove of pitcher Dan Quisenberry for a single. George Brett sent the game into overtime with a homer and both clubs then tallied in the 10th inning, K.C. on an error and Seattle on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Narron.
Cubs 3, Mets 2 at Chicago (day game):
A pinch-single by Jesus Figueroa broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning as the Cubs edged the Mets, 3-2, with Bruce Sutter recording his 27th save of the season. The score was 2-2 when Scot Thompson opened the Cubs' sixth with a single and was sacrificed to second. One out later, Figueroa slapped a single to right. The crowd of 1,171 was the smallest at Wrigley Field since 1968.
Braves 7, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Homers by Gary Matthews and Bob Horner highlighted a 12-hit attack as the Braves handed the Dodgers their fourth straight defeat, 7-2. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jerry Royster singled, stole second, advanced to third on an infield out and scored on an error by Steve Garvey. Matthews cracked a round-tripper in the fifth after a single by Rafael Ramirez, and Horner delivered his circuit clout in the seventh following a single by Matthews.
Pirates 4, Expos 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dave Parker and Mike Easler delivered the key hits to power the Pirates to a 4-2 triumph over the Expos. The Bucs scored twice in the third inning on a double by Jim Bibby, single by Phil Garner and two-run double by Parker. Parker drilled another two-bagger in the eighth and Easler then connected for a two-run round-tripper.
Astros 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Unfurling a four-hitter, Joe Niekro pitched the Astros to a 4-2 triumph over the Padres. The Astros scored a run in the fourth inning when Cesar Cedeno walked, stole second and scored on a single by Gary Woods. They added two more in the fifth on a homer by Joe Morgan and another in the sixth on a round-tripper by Cedeno.
Giants 7, Reds 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Rich Murray drove in two runs with a pair of singles and Gary Lavelle pitched three scoreless innings in relief to lead the Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Reds. Murray delivered a run-scoring single in the first inning when the Giants took a 3-0 lead. The other two runs came on an error and a passed ball. After the Reds tied the game in the top of the fifth, the Giants came back in the bottom of the frame on a single by Terry Whitfield, a walk and RBI single by Murray. The Giants tallied three more runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Larry Herndon, Milt May and Whitfield.
Phillies 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A pinch-hit double by Keith Moreland in the 10th inning lifted the Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. The game was tied, 2-2, when Larry Bowa opened the Phillies 10th with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Bob Boone. Moreland then laced a ball into the right field corner. Steve Carlton picked up his 23rd win of the season and Tug McGraw recorded his 18th save.
