Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 5, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Rick Waits hurled the Indians to a 5-0 victory over the Yankees, ending the Tribe's seven-game losing skein. The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a triple by Miguel Dilone and a wild pitch. They added another run in the third when Dilone singled and came around on a single by Rick Manning and a sacrifice fly. The Tribe picked up three markers in the eighth, two coming when center fielder Bobby Brown dropped Jorge Orta's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.

White Sox 6, A's 4 at Oakland (day game):
A two-run single by Mike Squires in the eighth inning snapped a 4-4 tie, lifting the White Sox to a 6-4 victory over the A's. Brian Kingman was the loser, making the A's the first team since the 1975 White Sox to have one pitcher win 20 games (Norris, 21-8) and one pitcher (Kingman) lose 20 games. Kingman, who was removed from the A's starting rotation in hopes of averting his 20th loss, was brought into the game in the second inning because starter Matt Keough had to leave with muscle spasms and was tagged with the defeat.

Mariners 7, Rangers 6 at Seattle (night game):
Rallying for three runs in the 11th inning, the Mariners prevailed over the Rangers, 7-6. After the Rangers took a 6-4 lead in the top of the 11th on a two-run homer by Pat Putnam, the Mariners loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame on singles by Bruce Bochte and Tom Paciorek and a walk to Jerry Narron. Dave Edler then delivered a three-run double. The Mariners had tied the contest in the ninth with a solo homer by Willie Horton.

Astros 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Driving in three runs with a homer and single, Joe Morgan led the Astros to a 4-2 triumph over the Braves, enabling the Astros to regain first place in the West Division ahead of the Dodgers. Morgan's round-tripper came in the third inning after a single by Nolan Ryan. After the Braves tied score at 2-2 in the fourth, the Astros went ahead in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Morgan. Houston's final run came in the seventh on an RBI single by Enos Cabell.

Cubs 5, Expos 4 at Chicago (day game):
Paced by three hits by Bill Buckner, the Cubs shaded the Expos, 5-4. The Cubs took the lead in the first inning on a double by Buckner and single by Larry Biittner. Buckner doubled home a third-inning tally and Jim Tracy cracked a leadoff homer in the fourth. A two-run single by Steve Dillard in the sixth inning followed singles by Buckner and Biittner and an intentional walk to Jerry Martin. The Expos kayoed Cubs ace Bruce Sutter in the ninth, but Dick Tidrow came on to get the final out with the tying run on base. The defeat knocked the Expos out of first place in the East Division, one-half game behind the Phillies.

Giants 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Homers by Terry Whitfield and Darrell Evans powered the Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. With the score 1-1 in the third inning, Whitfield unloaded a solo round-tripper and, one out later, Evans connected.

Phillies 2, Mets 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Although needing relief help, unbeaten rookie Marty Bystrom received credit for his fourth consecutive victory as the Phillies edged the Mets, 2-1, and took over first place in the East Division, ahead of the Expos. The Phils broke the scoreless deadlock in the fifth inning when Manny Trillo tripled and scored on a single by Garry Maddox. Maddox reached second on a single by Larry Bowa but was forced at third by Bystrom. One out later, Lonnie Smith delivered a single that scored Bowa.

Cardinals 10, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Ted Simmons smashed two homers, including his seventh career grand slam, to lead the Cardinals to a 10-2 rout of the Pirates. Simmons blasted a leadoff homer in the second inning. His grand slam came in the seventh stanza after singles by Tommy Herr and Jim Kaat and an intentional walk to Keith Hernandez. Simmons also singled home a run during a four-run ninth that was capped with a three-run homer by George Hendrick.

Reds 5, Padres 3 at San Diego (day game):
A two-run double by Vic Correll in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Reds to a 5-3 triumph over the Padres. With one out in the 10th and the game tied, 3-3, George Foster doubled and, one out later, Ray Knight received an intentional base on balls. Correll drilled a ball to left-center to plate both runners. The Reds had tied the contest in the seventh on a two-run pinch-single by Harry Spilman.
