Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 6, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Jim Morrison hit a two-run homer plus three singles to help bat the White Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Angels. After the Angels took a 2-0 lead, Chet Lemon doubled in the third inning and Morrison followed with his homer to tie the score. The White Sox then took the lead in that same stanza when Rusty Kuntz singled to drive in Lamar Johnson.
Indians 6, Orioles 5 at Cleveland (day game):
Singles by Dave Rosello, Alan Bannister and Mike Hargrove in the eighth inning produced the Indians' winning run in a 6-5 victory over the Orioles. Both clubs had four-run outbursts in the fifth. Eddie Murray produced two of the Orioles runs with a single and Bo Diaz hit a three-run double for the Indians. The Orioles went ahead in the sixth with a single by Doug DeCinces, a wild pitch, long fly to right and an infield hit by Kiko Garcia, but the Indians knotted the count in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jorge Orta.
Tigers 5, Yankees 1 at Detroit (day game):
Lance Parrish hit two run-scoring triples to lead the Tigers' attack in a 5-1 victory over the Yankees. A single by Ricky Peters and infield out by Alan Trammell produced two runs for the Tigers in the third inning before Parrish made it 3-1 with his first triple of the game in the sixth. Parrish's second triple and a sacrifice fly by Al Cowens added a pair in the eighth. Aurelio Lopez saved the game for starter Jack Morris, striking out Willie Randolph and retiring Bobby Murcer on a fly after the Yankees had loaded the bases in the ninth inning.
Twins 8, Royals 3 at Minnesota (day game):
With Jerry Koosman pitching a three-hitter, the Twins posted their eighth straight victory, defeating the Royals, 8-3. The Twins scored six of their runs in the third inning, launching their attack with a two-run triple by Dave Edwards. Jose Morales and Butch Wynegar hit consecutive homers in the fifth. Frank White had a two-run blow for the Royals, but George Brett went hitless in four trips, dropping his average to .384.
A's 7, Brewers 4 at Oakland (day game):
Rickey Henderson equaled Ty Cobb's A.L. record of 96 stolen bases in one season by pilfering four sacks in the course of the A's 7-4 victory over the Brewers. Cobb set his mark in 1915. Rick Langford pitched his 27th complete game and was the winner when the A's broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the sixth inning, two on a double by Dave McKay and two on a homer by Rob Picciolo.
Rangers 7, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
The Rangers smashed four homers -- two by Dave Roberts and one each by Buddy Bell and Billy Sample -- to gain a 7-3 victory over the Mariners.
Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (day game):
Jim Rice was collared in four trips, ending his 21-game hitting streak, but Dave Rader and Rick Burleson smashed homers to lead the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Dave Stapleton drove in a run with a single in the first inning before Rader connected for the circuit. The Blue Jays came back to tie the score, but Burleson then accounted for the Red Sox victory with his homer in the seventh.
Giants 2, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Rich Murray and Mike Sadek hit homers to account for the Giants' runs in a 2-1 victory over the Braves. Dale Murphy batted in the Braves' run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Cubs 2, Pirates 0 at Chicago (day game):
With the help of Dick Tidrow, who pitched the last three innings, Randy Martz gained his first major league victory when the Cubs defeated the Pirates, 2-0, virtually killing off the last chance for the defending champions to repeat in the East Division race. The Pirates, in third place, were 5½ games behind the Phillies and five behind the Expos. The Cubs collected only three hits off Jim Bibby, but one was a homer by Jim Tracy in the fifth inning. The other run counted in the same stanza on a single by Mike O'Berry, error by Pirates center fielder Oamr Moreno on a hit, and a sacrifice fly by Mick Kelleher.
Astros 2, Reds 0 at Houston (day game):
For the second straight game, the Astros pinned a 2-0 shutout on the Reds, posting the victory behind the combined four-hit pitching of Joe Niekro and Dave Smith. Both Astros' runs off Mario Soto came in the fifth inning and were unearned. Denny Walling led off with a single for the Astros' first hit of the game and Alan Ashby followed with a fly that sailed past the glove of center fielder Dave Collins, who was charged with an error. Craig Reynolds then doubled down the first base line to drive in Walling and Ashby.
Cardinals 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
Making his first start, Jeff Little gained his first major league victory when the Cardinals defeated the Mets, 4-2. The lefthander pitched shutout ball until knocked out in the eighth inning when the Mets scored their runs. The Cards counted three times in the third on five singles and added their other tally in the fourth on a double by Dane Iorg and singles by Terry Kennedy and Tommy Herr.
Expos 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Expos beat Steve Carlton, 4-3, and pulled within one-half game of the leading Phillies in the East Division race. Mike Schmidt and Manny Trillo hit homers around one by Gary Carter to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead, but the Expos tied the score in the fourth on a double by Andre Dawson and single by Chris Speier. Doubles by Speier and Jerry White sent the Expos ahead in the seventh and they added what proved to be the deciding run in the eighth when Dawson doubled to knock out Carlton and Larry Parrish singled off Warren Brusstar.
Dodgers 6, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
The Dodgers collected 15 hits off three Padres pitchers and gained a 6-4 victory to remain two games behind the Astros in the West Division race. Dusty Baker drove in a run with a double in the first inning and another with a grounder in the sixth when the Dodgers took a 5-1 lead. Pedro Guerrero added an insurance run with a pinch-homer in the eighth. Luis Salazar scored for the Padres on an error after hitting a triple in the second inning and drove in a run with a single in the eighth.
