Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 8, Angels 1 at California (day game):
Although needing relief help from Mike Proly, rookie Britt Burns notched his 14th victory of the season as the White Sox routed the Angels, 8-1. Bob Molinaro singled home two runs in the first inning and delivered a sacrifice fly in the third. A three-run double by Todd Cruz highlighted a five-run eighth.
Orioles 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
A two-run homer by Doug DeCinces was the key blow as the Orioles stayed alive in the East Division race by downing the Indians, 5-3. The Orioles trailed, 3-1, when they scored three runs in the sixth inning on a single by Ken Singleton, a wild pitch, single by Benny Ayala and a circuit swat by DeCinces. Singleton hita solo homer in the first.
Tigers 6, Yankees 5 at Detroit (day game):
After scoring their first five runs on two homers, the Tigers counted the winning run on a 10th-inning error and edged the Yankees, 6-5. In the 10th, John Wockenfuss doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Lynn Jones. After Lance Parrish was hit by a pitch and Champ Summers walked to load the bases, Tom Brookens hit a slow grounder that first baseman Bob Watson misplayed, enabling Jones to score. In other Tiger scoring, Parrish drilled a three-run homer in the sixth and Summers tied the game with a two-run round-tripper in the eighth off Yankee ace Rich Gossage. The homer was the first off Gossage since July 26 and he had yielded only one run in 19 appearances since August 8.
Twins 8, Royals 7 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins won their ninth straight game, gaining an 8-7 victory over the Royals, who went down to their eighth successive defeat. A pinch-hit homer by George Brett with the bases loaded gave the Royals a 7-4 lead in the sixth inning, but the Twins retaliated with four markers in the seventh. A two-run homer by Glenn Adams drove in the second and third runs of the inning and, after Butch Wynegar walked, Rob Wilfong drilled a run-scoring double.
A's 3, Brewers 2 at Oakland (day game):
A bunt single by Dwayne Murphy in the ninth inning lifted the A's to a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. Jeff Newman began the inning with an infield single and was replaced by pinch-runner Mike Edwards, who moved to second on a sacrifice by Jim Essian. After Dave McKay flied out and Dave Revering was given an intentional walk, Rickey Henderson grounded to shortstop Robin Yount, who bobbled the ball to load the bases. Murphy then bunted safely down the first base line.
Rangers 4, Mariners 1 at Seattle (day game):
A two-run homer by Johnny Grubb in the seventh inning powered the Rangers to a 4-1 victory over the Mariners. A single by Bud Harrelson preceded Grubb's clout. Al Oliver, who went 4-for-5, singled home the Rangers' final run in the ninth.
Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (day game):
Scattering 11 hits, Steve Crawford hurled the Red Sox to a 7-3 victory over the Blue Jays. The Red Sox scored three runs in the fourth inning on a walk to Dave Rader, singles by Dwight Evans and Chico Walker and a double by Glenn Hoffman. Four other tallies followed in the fifth, the key hit being a three-run homer by Jim Rice.
Cubs 3, Pirates 2 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run triple by Mick Kelleher in the sixth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Cubs to a 3-2 triumph over the Pirates, eliminating the defending world champions from the pennant race. Kelleher's blast scored Jim Tracy, who had singled, and Mike O'Berry, who walked.
Reds 8, Astros 5 at Houston (day game):
Driving in three runs with a homer, two doubles and a single, Ken Griffey paced the Reds to an 8-5 victory over the Astros. The Reds trailed, 5-4, going into the seventh inning, when Paul Householder slammed a one-out pinch-triple and came home on a single by Dave Collins. After Joe Sambito relieved Joaquin Andujar on the mound for Houston, Griffey drilled a double that plated Collins. Dave Concepcion followed with a single, scoring Griffey.
Mets 8, Cardinals 0 at New York (day game):
The Mets snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the Cardinals, 8-0, as Mike Scott pitched his first big league shutout. Joel Youngblood swatted a two-run homer in the first inning and the Mets added six runs in the eighth, including two on a triple by Hubie Brooks.
Expos 8, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Expos regained first place in the East Division by defeating the Phillies, 8-3, as Gary Carter led the attack with two homers, a double and four runs batted in and Chris Speier contributed a two-run triple. Carter drilled a solo homer in second. After a sacrifice fly by Rowland Office broke a 1-1 tie in the third, Speier's three-bagger and a single by Steve Rogers produced three runs in the sixth. Carter followed Andre Dawson's two-out infield hit in the seventh with his second round-tripper of the game and drove in his fourth run with a ninth-inning double.
Padres 7, Dodgers 5 at San Diego (day game):
Rallying for four runs in the eighth inning, the Padres captured a 7-5 decision from the Dodgers. The Padres trailed, 5-3, when Dave Winfield cracked a one-out double, went to third on a single by Randy Bass and scored on a single by Luis Salazar. After a walk to pinch-hitter Craig Stimac loaded the bases, a pass to Broderick Perkins forced in the tying run. Barry Evans then lifted a pop fly behind second base which Davey Lopes lost in the sun for an error, allowing Salazar to score and putting the Padres ahead, 6-5. Gene Richards followed with a single for an insurance run to cap the outburst.
