Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 1 at Boston (night game):
A four-run outburst in the second inning carried the Red Sox to a 4-1 decision over the Blue Jays. Jim Rice led off the inning with a single, stole second, beat the throw to third on Rich Gedman's fielder's choice grounder and scored on a single by Glenn Hoffman. An rrror by Jays shortstop Alfredo Griffin on a grounder by Julio Valdez altowed Gedman to score. A single by Reid Nichols plated Hoffman and Valdez also came home on right fielder Barry Bonnell's throwing error.

White Sox 9, A's 4 at Chicago (day game):
Guy Hoffman, coming on in relief, yielded just two hits over the last five innings to notch his first major league victory as the White Sox defeated the A's, 9-4. The White Sox tallied three runs in their first turn at bat on a two-run single by Lamar Johnson and sacrifice fly by Bob Molinaro. They picked up two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Fran Mullins and sacrifice fly by Chet Lemon.

Royals 6, Mariners 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A three-run double by Hal McRae in the third inning capped a four-run outburst that triggered the Royals to a 6-2 victory over the Mariners. The Royals' first run in the third came on a sacrifice fly by Jose Cardenal.

Yankees 3, Tigers 2 at New York (night game):
The Yankees clinched at least a tie for the East Division championship by downing the Tigers, 3-2. The Tigers were leading, 1-0, going into the bottom of the fourth inning when oscar Gamble slammed a leadoff homer. Reggie Jackson then followed with a towering shot over the right-center field fence. The Yankees picked up another run in the sixth when Gamble walked, reached third on a single by Jackson and came in on a sacrifice fly by Bob Watson.

[DH] Twins 6, Rangers 3 (night game) / Twins 4, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
The Twins set a club record for consecutive victories with 11 in a row by sweeping a doubleheader from the Rangers, 6-3 and 4-1. Geoff Zahn, getting relief help from Doug Corbett, picked up the win in the lidlifter as Ron Jackson, John Castino, Roy Smalley and Bombo Rivera each collected two hits. The Twins broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning of the nightcap with two runs on a hit batsman, double by Ken Landreaux and single by Rick Sofield.

Astros 3, Braves 2 at Houston (night game):
The Astros moved into a three-game lead over the Dodgers in the West Division race with a 3-1 triumph over the Braves. The Astros got all their runs in the third inning on a leadoff homer by Gary Woods, singles by Rafael Landestoy and Alan Ashby, sacrifice bunt by Joe Niekro and two-run single by Joe Morgan. Frank LaCorte earned the save by striking out Dale Murphy to end the game with the potential tying runs on base.

Phillies 4, Cubs 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies moved into a first-place tie with the Expos in the East Division by beating the Cubs, 4-2. Mike Schmidt slammed his 46th homer of the season for the Phillies in the fourth inning. The game was tied, 1-1, in the seventh when Del Unser drilled a leadoff double and Keith Moreland followed with an RBI single. The Phils picked up two more runs in the eighth on an error by Cubs third baseman Steve Dillard and run-scoring single by Greg Gross.

Giants 3, Dodgers 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Dodgers' pennant chances were jolted by a 3-2 loss to the Giants, who won the game with a two-run rally in the eighth inning. With one out in the eighth, Milt May stroked a pinch-single. Max Venable also singled and pinch-hitter Jim Wohlford flied out. Bobby Castillo replaced starter Dave Goltz on the hill for the Dodgers with a 1-1 count on Jack Clark and walked the batter to load the bases. Darrell Evans then singled to right to plate two tallies.
