Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 4, Angels 1 at Chicago (night game):
Settling possession of fifth place in the West Division, the White Sox defeated the Angels, 4-1. Britt Burns, who pitched six innings before his arm stiffened in 40-degree weather, received credit for his 15th victory. Mike Proly finished and picked up his seventh save.

Twins 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
The Twins extended their club-record winning streak to 12 games with a 5-3 victory over the Royals. Gary Ward had a 4-for-4 night in the Twins' 14-hit attack that included a two-run homer by John Castino. George Brett went 1-for-3 to remain at .389 but became the first player since Walt Dropo of the Red Sox in 1950 to drive in an average of one run per game played. Brett hit a sacrifice fly to give him 118 RBIs in 116 games with two left to play.

Rangers 6, Mariners 2 at Texas (night game):
After hitting a homer in the first inning, Al Oliver doubled in the fourth to ignite a four-run outburst that gave the Rangers a 6-2 victory over the Mariners. After his double, Oliver advanced to third on a single by Buddy Bell and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Rusty Staub to tie the score at 2-2. Following two walks that loaded the bases, Mike Richardt singled, driving in Bell, to put the Rangers ahead. Bud Harrelson then iced the decision with a two-run single.

Braves 4, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Batting with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Terry Harper cleared the sacks with a double to bring the Braves a 1-1 victory over the Reds. The RBIs were the first in the major leagues for the Braves' rookie outfielder.

Dodgers 3, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers kept their West Division hopes alive by coming from behind to tie the score on a single by Ron Cey in the ninth inning and then beating the Astros, 3-2, on a homer by Joe Ferguson in the 10th. The victory moved the Dodgers within two games of the Astros with two left to play. The Astros scored their initial run in the second on a double by Alan Ashby and single by Ken Forsch. Rick Monday and Steve Garvey hit doubles to tie the score in the fourth, but the Astros went ahead again with a run in the eighth on a pass to Cesar Cedeno, single by Art Howe and sacrifice fly by Ashby. Monday singled for his third hit of the game in the ninth and Dusty Baker was safe on an error by Rafael Landestoy. After Garvey flied out, Cey hit his single to score pinch-runner Rudy Law and pave the way for Ferguson's game-winning homer in the 10th.

Phillies 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Posting a 2-1 victory in the opener of the series, the Phillies took a one-game lead over the Expos with two games left to play in the East Division race. Mike Schmidt batted in both Phils' runs. In the first inning, Pete Rose singled, Bake McBride doubled and Schmidt plated Rose with a sacrifice fly. Then in the sixth, Schmidt hit his 47th homer for the deciding run. The Expos counted in their half on a double by Jerry White, pass to Rodney Scott, sacrifice by Rowland Office and sacrifice fly by Andre Dawson.

Pirates 3, Cubs 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Jesse Jefferson made his first appearance with the Pirates since being obtained from the Blue Jays and pitched 6 2/3 innings to get credit for a 3-1 victory over the Cubs, After Kent Tekulve replaced Jefferson and gave up a bases-loading hit, John Candelaria made his first relief appearance of the season and pitched 2 1/3 innings to earn the save.

Padres 12, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Although the victims of a triple play, the Padres easily defeated the Giants, 12-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Steve Mura. In the fourth inning, with Padres runners on first and second, Giants' rookie infielders executed a triple play on a line drive by Dave Cash. The ball was caught by second baseman Guy Sularz, who threw to shortstop Joe Pettini, catching Lui Salazar off second. Pettini's relay to first baseman Rich Murray tripled up Gene Tenace. Salazar led the Padres at bat, driving in four runs, including three with a homer in the first inning.

Cardinals 6, Mets 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Three younger Cardinals shared the run production in a 6-4 victory over the Mets. Terry Kennedy, who went 3-for-4 at bat, knocked in two runs. Tommy Herr and Leon Durham each had two hits and two RBIs.
