Today's scores and summaries:
Brewers 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Playing in his first game since May 19 of last year, Larry Hisle belted a two-run homer and Gorman Thomas added a solo shot to highlight a three-run sixth inning, lifting the Brewers to a 5-3 triumph over the Indians in the season opener for both teams. An RBI double by Paul Molitor gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead in the third and Hisle and Thomas put Milwaukee ahead to say after the Tribe had tied the game in the fifth frame on a run-scoring single by Tom Veryzer.
Tigers 6, Blue Jays 2 at Detroit (day game):
Collecting three hits and two RBIs, Steve Kemp paced the Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays. The Tigers jumped in front, 1-0, in the third inning when Ricky Peters doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an infield single by Kemp. A solo homer by Lance Parrish in the fourth made it 2-0. The Tigers tallied four times in the seventh stanza on an RBI triple by Kemp and run-scoring singles by Richie Hebner, Mick Kelleher and Lou Whitaker.
A's 3, Twins 0 at Minnesota (day game):
The A's posted their third straight victory over the Twins, 3-0, behind the six-hit pitching of Matt Keough. Oakland scored twice in the third inning when Rickey Henderson and Dwayne Murphy walked, advanced on a groundout by Dave Revering and came home on a single by Wayne Gross. Revering collected an RBI single in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Yankees 5, Rangers 1 at New York (day game):
Homers by Graig Nettles, Willie Randolph and Oscar Gamble powered the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Rangers. Nettles connected in the second inning after a walk to Bobby Murcer to give the Bronx Bombers a 2-0 lead. The Rangers tallied in the top of the third on a triple by Pat Putnam and run-scoring single by Jim Sundberg. But the Yanks retaliated in the bottom of the frame on a solo round-tripper by Randolph and two-run circuit clout by Gamble.
Angels 7, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Tom Brunansky, a 20-year-old rookie outfielder, hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the Angels to a 7-4 victory over the Mariners. Brunansky's first round-tripper came in the second inning after a leadoff walk to Brian Downing. His second circuit swat came in the sixth with Downing aboard via a single. Fred Lynn belted a two-run homer in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Reds 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Driving in two runs with a homer and single, George Foster paced the Reds to a 3-2 decision over the Braves. The round-tripper was a solo blast in the fourth inning. After the Braves tied the game, 1-1, in the fifth on an RBI single by Glenn Hubbard, the Reds went ahead to stay in the eighth. Dave Collins singled, reached second on a balk and scored on a single by Dave Concepcion, who took second on the throw to the plate and registered on a single by Foster.
Cubs 3, Mets 1 at Chicago (day game):
Sent to Chicago in the trade for controversial slugger Dave Kingman, Steve Henderson completed a satisfying 3-for-3 day against his former teammates by lining a two-out, two-run triple in the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and lead the Cubs to a 3-1 triumph over the Mets. Ivan DeJesus singled and stole second before Bill Buckner drew an intentional walk preceding Henderson's smash off New York reliever Jeff Reardon.
Dodgers 7, Astros 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers defeated the Astros, 7-4, as Don Sutton, in his first outing after 15 years as a Dodger, was roundly thumped. The Dodgers collected four runs on five hits in the second inning. A two-run single by Davey Lopes climaxed the rally after Pedro Guerrero and Bill Russell had also contributed RBI singles. A triple by Dusty Baker, a walk, run-scoring single by Ron Cey and sacrifice fly by Mike Scioscia plated two more L.A. runs in the fifth.
Giants 2, Padres 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Scoring both runs on bases-loaded walks, the Giants blanked the Padres, 2-0, behind the combined pitching of Doyle Alexander and Greg Minton. Johnny LeMaster started the winning rally in the fifth inning with a single and scored on consecutive walks to Alexander, Chili Davis and Enos Cabell. After Danny Boone replaced Juan Eichelberger on the hill for the Padres, Joe Morgan walked to force in another marker. It was the first victory for Giants Manager Frank Robinson and first loss for San Diego's boss Frank Howard.
Phillies 5, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Mike Schmidt cracked a three-run homer in the first inning and Dick Ruthven pitched a five-hitter as the Phillies downed the Cardinals, 5-2, in the home opener for St. Louis. Schmidt's blast followed a double by Pete Rose and walk to Manny Trillo. The Cards pulled off a triple play in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Gary Matthews hit a low line drive to shortstop Garry Templeton. Although the umpire ruled a clean catch, Templeton thought the ball had been trapped and threw to catcher Darrell Porter, who relayed the ball to first baseman Keith Hernandez. The umpire ruled Schmidt had retouched first and Hernandez threw the ball to second baseman Tommy Herr to nail Schmidt for the second out. Herr then fired the ball to third baseman Ken Oberkfell, who tagged Bake McBride to complete the triple play.
