Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
A four-run outburst in the top of the ninth inning carried the Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Red Sox. The score was 1-1 when Ken Singleton led off the Baltimore ninth with a two-bagger and was replaced by pinch-runner Wayne Krenchicki. Tom Burgmeier then relieved Steve Crawford on the mound for the Bosox and the Birds loaded the bases on an error by shortstop Glenn Hoffman and infield single by Gary Roenicke. Burgmeier retired the next two batters but Jose Morales put the Orioles ahead with a two-run single. The Orioles then pulled a double steal to make it 4-1 and Rich Dauer capped the rally with a run-scoring double.

A's 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Racing to their fifth straight victory, the A's shaded the Angels, 3-2, with a two-run homer by Tony Armas the big blow. After the Angels broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk, the A's struck back in the top of the eighth. Rickey Henderson opened with a walk and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt. The next two batters were retired, but Armas then ripped the ball to deep center field for the game-winning hit.

Blue Jays 5, Yankees 1 at Toronto (day game):
The Blue Jays, who have never lost a home opener, won for the fifth straight year by beating the Yankees, 5-1. The Jays trailed, 1-0, in the fourth inning when Lloyd Moseby singled with one out and stole second. One out later, John Mayberry walked and Otto Velez stroked a double to plate Moseby. Al Woods then delivered a two-run single. The Jays put the game on ice in the seventh on a two-run triple by Alfredo Griffin. Roy Lee Jackson, in relief of Jim Clancy, induced Bobby Murcer to bounce into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Braves 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Rufino Linares, who had only a bunt single to show for his first 15 major league at-bats, singled sharply to right to score Rafael Ramirez with the winning run in the 10th inning of the Braves 2-1 triumph over the Astros. Bob Knepper, making his first start for Houston since being obtained in a trade from San Francisco last winter, was knocked from the game in the fourth inning when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Dale Murphy. The lefthander had to be helped from the field and a team spokesman said the pitcher had suffered a bruised left foot.

Phillies 5, Pirates 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Cy Young award winner Steve Carlton, who started but wasn't involved in the decision in the season opener at Cincinnati, notched his 250th career victory by scattering nine hits as the Phillies unleashed a 13-hit attack to down the Pirates, 5-1.

Reds 7, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Homers by Dan Driessen, Johnny Bench and Ray Knight powered the Reds to a 7-1 triumph over the Padres in San Diego's home opener. Driessen's blast came with the bases empty in the second inning. Bench's blow came in the fourth with two mates aboard and was followed by Knight's clout. Tom Seaver, yielding three hits in eight innings, posted his 246th career victory. He struck out five to raise his career total to 2,997, fifth on the all-time list.

Dodgers 4, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Dodgers took the lead in the fourth inning on singles by Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero, Mike Scioscia and Jay Johnstone and then got spotless relief for their 4-3 victory over the Giants. L.A. chalked up its fourth straight victory this season as relievers Dave Stewart, Dave Goltz and Bobby Castillo blanked the Giants on three hits in the final six innings.
