Today's scores and summaries:

A's 5, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The undefeated A's ran their winning streak to six games, downing the Angels, 5-2, behind the four-hit hurling of Mike Norris. The A's scored three runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Tony Armas, run-scoring groundout by Jeff Newman and Shooty Babitt's comebacker to pitcher Geoff Zahn, who threw late to the plate. Cliff Johnson stroked a two-run single in the ninth.

White Sox 9, Brewers 3 at Chicago (day game):
A bases-loaded homer by Carlton Fisk highlighted a six-run fourth inning as the White Sox thrashed the Brewers, 9-3, before a record opening day crowd of 51,550. The Sox jumped in front in the third inning on a two-run single by Greg Luzinski. The fourth inning explosion came after two were out. Tony Bernazard singled, reached second on a walk to Bill Almon and scored on a single by Ron LeFlore. An infield hit by Mike Squires then filled the sacks for Fisk.

Tigers 6, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
An opposite-field single by Ricky Peters drove home the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as the Tigers edged the Royals, 6-5, in the home opener for K.C.

Twins 5, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Ron Jackson homered twice and Roy Smalley also hit for the circuit as the Twins outlasted the Mariners, 5-4. Jackson led off the fifth inning with a round-tripper and hammered his second shot with the bases empty in the seventh. Smalley clouted a solo shot in the sixth.

Indians 7, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Erupting for four runs in their first turn at bat, the Indians posted their first victory of the season, 7-1 over the Rangers, spoiling Texas' home opener. Mike Hargrove began the rally by drawing a base on balls, and Joe Charboneau followed with a single. Toby Harrah plated two tallies with a triple and came in on a two-bagger by Jorge Orta. Bo Diaz capped the rally with an RBi single.

Astros 8, Braves 2 at Houston (night game):
Recording their first victory of the season, the Astros bounced the Braves, 8-2. Terry Puhl cracked his 12th career leadoff homer in the first inning and the Astros added another run in the same frame on an RBI single by Jose Cruz, who broke an 0 for 17 slump. Alan Ashby doubled home a run in a three-run fifth and drove in another with a ninth-inning single.

Reds 4, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Tossing a two-hitter, rookie righthander Bruce Berenyi, who had never given up fewer than three runs in his six previous major league starts and had never pitched more than seven innings, hurled the Reds to a 4-0 whitewashing of the Padres. The Reds put the game away in the first inning on a two-run double by Dave Concepcion and run-scoring single by Ron Oester. George Foster cracked a solo homer in the third.

Dodgers 7, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
The Dodgers extended their winning streak to five games, beating the Giants, 7-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Fernando Valenzuela. The Giants run in the eighth was the first earned run allowed by Valenzuela after 11 shutout appearances covering 34 2/3 innings. L.A. scored in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ron Cey and added another in the seventh on a solo homer by Steve Yeager. Cey doubled home two tallies in the eighth and Steve Garvey doubled home two more in a three-run ninth.
