Twins 6, Angels 4 at California (night game):
A grand slam by Roy Smalley was the big blow as the Twins defeated the Angels, 6-4. With Minnesota ahead, 1-0, in the third inning, Ray Smith doubled and Gary Ward and John Castino drew walks to set the stage for Smalley's blast. Butch Hobson connected for a three-run homer in the seventh for the Angels.

White Sox 2, Red Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by Carlton Fisk was the decisive blow as the White Sox shaded the Red Sox, 2-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Steve Trout and Lamarr Hoyt. Fisk's blast came in the fifth inning and followed a single by Bill Almon.

Indians 5, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Recording his 42nd career shutout, Bert Blyleven permitted just four hits in pitching the Indians to a 5-0 victory over the Brewers. A sacrifice fly by Bo Diaz plated the Tribe's first marker in the fifth inning and Joe Charboneau delivered a two-run single in the sixth.

A's 8, Mariners 0 at Oakland (day game):
The A's tied the major league record for best season start by winning their 10th straight game, 8-0 over the Mariners, behind the six-hit pitching of Brian Kingman. The mark was set by Brooklyn in 1955 and equaled by Pittsburgh in 1962 and Cleveland in 1966. The A's tallied four times in the first inning on a wild pitch, two-run double by Mitchell Page and RBI single by Shooty Babitt.

Rangers 6, Yankees 4 at Texas (day game):
A three-run homer by Bump Wills sparked the Rangers to a 6-4 come-from-behind triumph over the Yankees. Texas trailed, 4-0, in the bottom of the fifth inning when Wills slammed his round-tripper following a single by Pat Putnam and an error by N.Y. center fielder Jerry Mumphrey. Later in the same frame, a single by Buddy Bell drove in the tying tally. The Rangers went ahead in the seventh on an RBI single by Bell and run-scoring double by Jim Sundberg.

Tigers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (day game):
A four-run rally in the sixth inning lifted the Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays. The winning surge began with a leadoff triple by Ricky Peters and RBI single by Alan Trammell, who moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Steve Kemp, who tallied on a single by Champ Summers. Summers advanced on a walk to Kirk Gibson and flyout by Lance Parrish and came home on a single by Lou Whitaker.

Giants 4, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Spacing four hits, Tom Griffin hurled the Giants to a 4-1 triumph over the Braves as Joe Morgan led the Frisco attack with three RBIs. The Giants scored three runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Enos Cabell and two run round-tripper by Morgan.

Cardinals 10, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
Driving in three runs, Tony Scott sparked the Cardinals to a 10-4 triumph over the Reds. The Redbirds tallied in the third inning on an RBI double by Keith Hernandez and scored three runs in the fourth on a run-scoring double by Tommy Herr, sacrifice fly by Garry Templeton and RBI single by Scott. A five-run seventh was capped by a two-run double by Scott. Tom Seaver struck out five batters, including Hernandez in the fourth inning for his 3,000th career strikeout.

Pirates 6, Astros 3 at Houston (day game):
A three-run outburst in the top of the 11th inning lifted the Pirates to a 6-3 victory over the Astros. The score was 3-3 when Tim Foli walked, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Lee Lacy. Jason Thompson added a run-scoring single and Tony Pena had an RBI fielder's choice to ice the game.

Expos 5, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Homers by Gary Carter and Andre Dawson helped power the Expos to a 5-3 decision over the Mets. The Expos scored three times in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Ellis Valentine and two-run circuit clout by Carter. Dawson drilled a solo swat in the sixth and pitcher Bill Gullickson delivered an RBI double in the seventh.

Phillies 4, Cubs 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A homer by Manny Trillo with two out and nobody on in the bottom of the 10th inning enabled the Phillies to edge the Cubs, 4-3, as Steve Carlton recorded his second victory.

Dodgers 2, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Rookie southpaw Fernando Valenzuela tossed his second shutout of the season as the Dodgers downed the Padres, 2-0. The L.A. runs came on a leadoff homer by Mike Scioscia in the seventh and an inning-opening clout by Dusty Baker in the eighth.
