Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Rangers 2 at Boston (day game):
Scattering seven hits, Mike Torrez pitched the Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Rangers. The Sox broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth on an RBI single by Jerry Remy and a two-run homer by Dwight Evans. After the Rangers registered in the sixth on a two-run round-tripper by Johnny Grubb, the Sox got an insurance marker in the eighth when Carney Lansford singled, stole second and raced home on a single by Gary Allenson.

Angels 6, Mariners 1 at California (night game):
A two-run homer by Fred Lynn in the first inning triggered the Angels to a 6-1 verdict over the Mariners as Geoff Zahn went the distance, spacing 10 hits. The Angels picked up a run in the second on an RBI double by Bobby Grich and another in the fifth when Butch Hobson tripled and came across on a passed ball.

Indians 4, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
An error and a passed ball in the ninth inning helped the Indians score two runs and defeat the Royals, 4-2. The game was tied, 2-2, when Toby Harrah walked with one out in the ninth. After Dan Quisenberry replaced Paul Splittorff on the hill for K.C., a single by Bo Diaz sent Harrah to third. Ken Brett then took over for Quisenberry and induced pinch-hitter Jorge Orta to hit a grounder that second baseman Rance Mulliniks misplayed, allowing Harrah to score and Diaz to take third, from where he eventually came across on a passed ball.

Yankees 6, Tigers 2 at New York (night game):
Making his first plate appearance at Yankee Stadium this year, Reggie Jackson lashed a two-run homer in the first inning and Oscar Gamble followed with a circuit clout to trigger the Yankees to a 6-2 triumph over the Tigers. Despite a wind-chill factor of 19 degrees, Rudy May went the route to record his third victory of the season and his 11th straight dating back to the 1980 season.

A's 3, Twins 0 at Oakland (night game):
Recording his second shutout of the season, Matt Keough tossed a five-hitter as the A's downed the Twins, 3-0. The A's runs came on a solo homer by Rob Picciolo in the third inning and a two-run wallop by Mike Heath in the fourth.

Brewers 5, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
The Brewers snapped their four-game losing streak by edging the Blue Jays, 5-4, in 12 innings. With the game tied, 4-4, Cecil Cooper led off the 12th with a single and Ben Oglivie followed with a triple. Winning pitcher Randy Lerch struck out the side in the bottom of the 12th to preserve the victory. The Brewers had tied the game with three runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Gorman Thomas, a bases-loaded hit batsman and a walk.

Dodgers 5, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Bursting for three runs in the first inning before anyone was out, the Dodgers went on to a 5-2 triumph over the Astros. Houston's Joaquin Andujar began the game by loading the bases on three straight walks, Steve Garvey then delivered a two-run single and Ron Cey produced the final run with another single.

Expos 9, Phillies 8 at Montreal (day game):
Pinch-hitter Jerry White greeted Tug McGraw by slugging the Philadelphia reliever's first pitch over the left field wall for a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Expos held off a two-run ninth-inning rally for a 9-8 decision over the Phillies. A walk to Larry Parrish and double by Chris Speier set the stage for White's game-winning clout.

Giants 9, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Vida Blue raised his lifetime record to 8-0 against San Diego as he combined with Gary Lavelle for a seven-hit shutout and Enos Cabell drove in three runs in the 9-0 Giants' victory over the Padres. Consecutive singles by Milt May and Johnny LeMaster, a sacrifice by Blue and two-run single by Cabell gave the Giants two runs in the fifth. Cabell also stroked a run-scoring single in the seventh, before San Francisco's six-run explosion in the ninth.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 1 at St. Louis (day game):
Three doubles by Keith Hernandez and a three-run triple by Tommy Herr sparked a 10-hit attack that carried the Cardinals to a 6-1 victory over the Cubs, Chicago's seventh straight loss. The Redbirds broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning on a two-bagger by Hernandez and single by George Hendrick and put the game away in a four-run eighth highlighted by Herr's bases-clearing three-bagger.
