Today's scores and summaries:

Rangers 16, Red Sox 8 at Boston (day game):
Jumping to an 11-0 lead in the first two innings, the Rangers administered a 16-8 drubbing to the Red Sox. Texas scored seven runs in their first turn at bat. Bump Wills began the game with a grounder past first which turned into a double when the Red Sox' ballboy fielded it. A single by Al Oliver plated Wills and the bases became loaded following a single by Buddy Bell and a walk to Johnny Grubb. Pat Putnam then cleared the sacks with a two-bagger. The other three runs of the big inning came on an error by Sox shortstop Glenn Hoffman and a two-run single by Wills. The Rangers added four in the second on a sacrifice fly by Putnam, two-run double by Billy Sample and RBI single by Mario Mendoza.

Angels 7, Mariners 3 at California (night game):
Bobby Grich belted a homer and single to drive in three runs, and Dan Ford collected three hits including a homer to lead the Angels to a 7-3 decision over the Mariners. Grich, hitting .184 entering the game, doubled home a run in the fourth inning and scored on a triple by Butch Hobson. Grich then opened the sixth with a round-tripper and stroked an RBI single in the seventh.

Indians 4, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Registering their fifth straight victory, the Indians blanked the Royals, 4-0, behind the seven-hit pitching of Len Barker. The Tribe broke the 0-0 deadlock in the seventh on an RBI single by Jorge Orta, two-run double by Mike Hargrove and run-scoring single by Joe Charboneau.

Yankees 7, Tigers 2 at New York (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Yankees downed the Tigers, 7-2, as rookie first baseman Steve Balboni tripled in his first major league at-bat and drew a bases-loaded walk in a five-run seventh inning to receive credit for the tie-breaking RBI. With the score 2-2 in the seventh, Lou Piniella drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a double by Graig Nettles. After Dennis Werth received an intentional pass, Balboni walked on four pitches, forcing home Piniella. Subsequent runs came on a sacrifice fly by Bucky Dent, two-run single by Jerry Mumphrey and RBI single by Dave Winfield. Reggie Jackson collected his 412th career homer, a solo shot in the fourth.

A's 2, Twins 1 at Oakland (day game):
The A's made two first-inning runs stand up to come away with a 2-1 decision over the Twins. Dwayne Murphy drew a one-out walk in the first, reached third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Dave Revering's towering drive that center fielder Mickey Hatcher lost in the sun for a triple. After Wayne Gross popped out, Tony Armas doubled past third to plate Revering. The Twins scored in the fourth on an RBI double by John Castino and put the leadoff man on first in the ninth but Craig Minetto and Jeff Jones came on to slam the door and preserve the victory.

Brewers 8, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (night game):
The first career grand slam by Paul Molitor climaxed a five-run fifth inning that lifted the Brewers to an 8-1 pasting of the Blue Jays. The Brewers were trailing, 1-0, when Ted Simmons drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and, one out later, Gorman Thomas walked. The bases became full when third baseman Danny Ainge booted a grounder by Don Money. Jim Gantner then walked, forcing in a run. Joey McLaughlin replaced Luis Leal on the mound and served up the gopher ball to Molitor.

Braves 7, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Slamming a homer and driving in four runs for the second consecutive day, Bob Horner supported Gaylord Perry, who scattered six hits in going the distance to notch his 290th career victory as the Braves defeated the Reds, 7-3. The Braves scored twice in the first inning on run-scoring singles by Claudell Washington and Horner, and picked up another marker in the second frame on a run-scoring single by Perry. Horner drilled an RBI double in the third and blasted a two-run homer in the fifth.

Dodgers 1, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Rookie southpaw Fernando Valenzuela raised his record to 4-0 by shackling the Astros on seven hits while hurling his third shutout and striking out 11 as the Dodgers edged Houston, 1-0.
